Having previously confirmed he had spoken with rival teams before re-signing with McLaren, Lando Norris says he’ll do it again when his current contract expires in 2025. Norris arrived on the Formula 1 grid in 2019, the Briton signing with McLaren but not before speaking with Red Bull Racing. That, though, wasn’t the last time he held informal talks with Christian Horner, doing so again before putting pen to paper on a new deal in early 2022. His latest contract runs through to 2025, Norris signing it before even seeing the new cars in action which raised a few eyebrows . “It was surprising that he signed such a long contract at the start of his career,” former F1 driver turned pundit Jenson Button Sky Sports F1. “We all want to be team players but you never know where the team is going to be in three years.” Norris has defended his decision, saying he wanted to avoid the need to have conversations with rival teams as all the drivers do before signing a contract. … [Read more...] about Lando Norris explains why he agreed a long-term contract with McLaren

Book World: What Egyptians wish for
By Deena Mohamed Pantheon. 568 pp. $35 - - - In the opening pages of Deena Mohamed's graphic novel "Shubeik Lubeik," we watch a televised public service announcement in which a woman purchases a "delesleep," a "third-class wish" granted not by a genie in a bottle but one confined to an aluminum can. When the being within emerges, the woman makes a simple request. "I want to lose weight! About," here she hesitates a moment, "ten kilos?" The results are as immediate as they are horrifying. Her right leg and left arm fall to the ground, bloodlessly severed by the force she has unleashed. Her wish granted, the woman screams. Welcome to a Cairo where donkeys talk, dragons destroy villages and posh suburban homes can hide under a cloak of invisibility. Cairo - the real city, that is - has long been a nerve center of Arab comic art's revival. Across the Middle East, political cartoonists and caricaturists have been experimenting with strips and visual stories for more than a … [Read more...] about Book World: What Egyptians wish for
Hermann Park, a gem that needed polishing
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 27 On a sunny day in Hermann Park, you'll find Houston on parade. Children cavort in fountains; art connoisseurs ogle statues; couples lounge beneath whispering pines. For more than 100 years the 445-acre park has been a sylvan respite in a concrete city. Home to a science museum, zoo, outdoor theater, gardens and hiking trails, the city's second-oldest municipal park draws about 6 million visitors annually. "It's a place for whoever you are," said Barrie Scardino Bradley , author of 2014's "Houston's Hermann Park: A Century of Community." "It's been a playing ground on which all Houstonians can play." The new Willie Nelson mini-series cuts a winding path through Texas
As longtime Willie Nelson obsessives, Thom Zimny and Oren Moverman leapt at the opportunity to explore his seven-decade career on screen. But the filmmakers knew any comprehensive study of the Texas music legend's vast output would overwhelm even a project with the size and scope of Willie Nelson & Family , their five-part, 263-minute documentary. "I mean, the man altogether—compilation, soundtrack, everything—has over 200 records," Moverman says. "We never had a list, going like, 'We have to have these songs in this, or we have to hit these moments musically.' We knew that there was no way." Produced by Blackbird Presents and Sight Unseen, the documentary marks the first authorized work about the singer-songwriter-guitarist's life and times, made with Nelson’s participation. It will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, screening in Salt Lake City today and in Park City on Tuesday, January 24, then becoming available to stream online through January 29. Child welfare algorithm faces Justice Department scrutiny
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Justice Department has been scrutinizing a controversial artificial intelligence tool used by a Pittsburgh-area child protective services agency following concerns that the tool could lead to discrimination against families with disabilities, The Associated Press has learned. The interest from federal civil rights attorneys comes after an AP investigation revealed potential bias and transparency issues surrounding the increasing use of algorithms within the troubled child welfare system in the U.S. While some see such opaque tools as a promising way to help overwhelmed social workers predict which children may face harm, others say their reliance on historical data risks automating past inequalities. Several civil rights complaints were filed in the fall about the Allegheny Family Screening Tool, which is used to … [Read more...] about Child welfare algorithm faces Justice Department scrutiny
2023 Mazda CX-9 Review: For A Select Few
Verdict 8.3 / 10 Design | Comfort | Technology | Performance | Safety | Fuel Economy | Pricing | FAQ The 2023 Mazda CX-9 doesn't necessarily tick all the right boxes. It isn't the roomiest or most efficient three-row, nor does it have the latest and greatest in-car tech like some of its rivals. If you're looking purely for an SUV that nails the family-hauling basics, there are better options out there. But for the shopper who values driving enjoyment – maybe someone who already has a Miata in their garage – the CX-9 is a family hauler that won't make you feel like you're sacrificing. What the CX-9 lacks in legroom it makes up for in agility and quickness, and for a select handful of people, that makes this SUV the one to get. A vehicle's ratings are relative only to its own segment and not the new-vehicle market as a whole. For more on how Motor1.com rates cars, click here . What next for F1 after FOM’s broadside to Ben Sulayem
Listen to this article Rather than it being a side story to F1’s ongoing Netflix-era soap opera, it potentially marks the start of a change of dynamic in the way the championship is run. While in public there has long been a united front between FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, paddock regulars know that things have been different behind the scenes. Away from the spotlight of television cameras, microphones and journalists’ notebooks, tensions have been simmering away for months now. Although many of the clashes of opinion between the FIA’s top man and chiefs at F1 owners Liberty Media were previously dealt with amicably behind closed doors without the need for dirty laundry to be aired in public, things have taken a big turn this week. Indeed, F1’s angry letter to Ben Sulayem about his remarks of an ‘inflated’ $20 billion price tag for the series has effectively made what one senior paddock source says is now ‘open warfare’ between F1’s … [Read more...] about What next for F1 after FOM’s broadside to Ben Sulayem
Hamilton versus the media · RaceFans
Lewis Hamilton is such a high-profile figure that anything he does invites questions about what true motive lies behind it. In the case of his latest tiff with the F1 media there probably isn’t one. Is he trying to deflect attention away from his failure to beat Nico Rosberg in qualifying today or perhaps his poorly-phrased reference to ‘someone or something’ not wanting him to win the championship a few days earlier? No, he just seems to be fed up with press conferences. Hamilton entertaining himself on Snapchat during the press conference. Former Mercedes motorsport strategy director James Vowles will head up the struggling squad. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Vowles started his F1 career as an engineer at British American Racing, which became Honda in 2006. By the time the team became Brawn he had stepped up to the role of race strategist, and helped guide Jenson Button to the world championship that year. The following year the team became Mercedes, which went on to dominate the V6 hybrid turbo era. Vowles and his strategy squad took Lewis Hamilton to six drivers’ title, Nico Rosberg to one, and the team to an unprecedented eight consecutive constructors championship wins. Following Capito’s exit, Williams owners Dorilton Capital moved quickly to appoint a replacement. Vowles admitted he only told Mercedes boss Toto Wolff “into the new year” that he was … [Read more...] about Why Vowles is a ‘very good’ fit at Williams – and doesn’t see them as a ‘mini Mercedes’ · RaceFans
