Houston comes up just short of No. 1 ranking, Texas back in top 5

February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

The Houston Cougars came up just short of being tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country this week, with Purdue hanging onto the top spot in the latest Associated Press college basketball rankings despite a loss to Indiana over the weekend. UH was ranked No. 2 in the poll, which was unveiled Monday morning. The Boilermakers received 38 first-place votes, compared to 22 for Houston. On Sunday, the then-No. 3 Cougars overcame a halftime deficit to topple Temple 81-65 , avenging a one-point loss to the Owls—who are now tied for second in the American Athletic Conference—last month at Fertitta Center. The only other team to beat UH (22-2) this season, Alabama, received one-first-place vote and is currently No. 3. Arizona, which was No. 4, also received one first-place vote. The University of Texas rounded out the top five, jumping up five spots after back-to-back ranked wins over Baylor and Kansas State. The Longhorns have another significant test ahead, with a top-10 road … [Read more...] about Houston comes up just short of No. 1 ranking, Texas back in top 5

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 A certain fortitude is required to dine at the Boiling Crab during crawfish season. By 6 p.m. — early for dinner in Houston — a line will have clotted the foyer and spilled onto the front sidewalk. “It will be 45 minutes,” a harried waitress may tell you as she inscribes your name in a crumpled notebook. That’s a short wait at this wildly popular restaurant fronting the Viet Hoa shopping plaza, which dominates the intersection of Beechnut and Beltway 8 near Houston’s new Chinatown. As the evening darkens, knots of cars snarl the parking lot and a vexed security guard directs rapper Chamillionaire’s custom pickup truck into a tight space. Curb-sitters step out for sodas; a few procure beers to sip in the car. In the entryway, kids peck at handheld video games while the grown-ups talk into cell phones, everybody breathing deeply of the garlic-and-brine aroma gusting from the … [Read more...] about Boiling Crab

Dusty Baker followed his usual pregame regimen Saturday morning as the Houston Astros sat one win away from the second championship in franchise history. More for you Astros Space City gear is a fashion grand slam The Astros manager made a stop at his favorite Rice Village coffee shop upon leaving his home, and he ran a few errands before heading to Minute Maid Park. Baker got a pair of shoes repaired, then stopped by his dry cleaners. The avid music fan then threw on a pregame playlist as he drove to the ballpark, which Baker said on Saturday included the Big Mama Thornton hit "Hound Dog" from 1952. Just hours before one of the biggest games of his life , Baker's pregame routine remained relatively mundane. It's hard to quibble with Baker's daily schedule given his historic success across a career matched by few in MLB history. Baker's life in baseball extends more than 50 years. He was a two-time All-Star as a player with 242 home runs across 19 … [Read more...] about Dusty Baker secures elusive championship with Astros’ World Series win
