The Houston Cougars came up just short of being tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country this week, with Purdue hanging onto the top spot in the latest Associated Press college basketball rankings despite a loss to Indiana over the weekend. UH was ranked No. 2 in the poll, which was unveiled Monday morning. The Boilermakers received 38 first-place votes, compared to 22 for Houston. On Sunday, the then-No. 3 Cougars overcame a halftime deficit to topple Temple 81-65 , avenging a one-point loss to the Owls—who are now tied for second in the American Athletic Conference—last month at Fertitta Center. ‘Indescribable’: Alperen Sengun details pain after Turkey earthquake
Houston Rockets center Alperen Şengün tweeted Monday he is praying for the victims of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked parts of Turkey and Syria early Monday morning. Şengün, a native of Turkey, added "my heart is with our citizens who were affected by the earthquake in Kahramanmaraş." The disaster killed more than 2,300 people, per an Associated Press report, with the center of the earthquake residing in Kahramanmaraş, Turkey's southeastern province. Nearly 70 percent of Texas voters support legalizing weed
New polling data shows that Texans are generally pretty down for legalizing weed . A survey from the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs released this week found that 67 percent of Texans "support legislation that would make the recreational use of marijuana for any purpose legal for those age 21 and older." Attitudes towards legalizing recreational cannabis appear to vary by race: according to the study's findings, " 73 percent of Latino, 66 percent of Black and 62 percent of white Texans support this legislation," referring to proposed recreational weed legalization laws. Hobby School researchers also found that 82 percent of Texans "support legislation that would make the use of marijuana legal for a wide range of medical purposes with a prescription, with 56 percent strongly in support of medical marijuana." Texas also appears to be in favor of reducing criminal penalties for marijuana use and possession.
