Houston comes up just short of No. 1 ranking, Texas back in top 5

February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

The Houston Cougars came up just short of being tabbed as the No. 1 team in the country this week, with Purdue hanging onto the top spot in the latest Associated Press college basketball rankings despite a loss to Indiana over the weekend. UH was ranked No. 2 in the poll, which was unveiled Monday morning. The Boilermakers received 38 first-place votes, compared to 22 for Houston. On Sunday, the then-No. 3 Cougars overcame a halftime deficit to topple Temple 81-65 , avenging a one-point loss to the Owls—who are now tied for second in the American Athletic Conference—last month at Fertitta Center. The only other team to beat UH (22-2) this season, Alabama, received one-first-place vote and is currently No. 3. Arizona, which was No. 4, also received one first-place vote. The University of Texas rounded out the top five, jumping up five spots after back-to-back ranked wins over Baylor and Kansas State. The Longhorns have another significant test ahead, with a top-10 road … [Read more...] about Houston comes up just short of No. 1 ranking, Texas back in top 5

Monday and Tuesday should mark the last day of Houston's recent warming trend, with highs pushing into the mid- to upper 70's. A cold front is set to move into the area starting Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, according to Space City Weather's Eric Berger . February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

It's Crawfish Week at Chron! For four days, the food team will be dropping fun stories about Houston's favorite crustacean. Read all our crawfish coverage here. Each year when crawfish season rolls around , flocks of eager Houstonians head to the city's many Viet-Cajun crawfish haunts to grab literal pounds of this fusion delicacy. From the carefully tossed spices and aromatics, to the communal style of eating, to the immigrant origin story itself, the Viet-Cajun phenomenon perfectly encompasses Houston in all its humid, diverse, zesty glory. Here's what you need to know about one of the cuisines that put H-Town on the map. Where did Viet-Cajun crawfish come from? From the get-go, Houston's proximity to Southeast Texas—dubbed "Lapland" by the Texas Almanac for being the place "where Cajun culture overlaps into Texas"—made it a prime incubator for fusion cuisine. As the Gulf Coast grew and diversified, so did its food offerings. Following the fall of Saigon in 1975, … [Read more...] about Everything to know about Viet-Cajun crawfish, Houston’s signature cuisine

It's Crawfish Week at Chron! For four days, the food team will be dropping fun stories about Houston's favorite crustacean. Read all our crawfish coverage here. HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM — Freshwater shrimp, more specifically giant river prawns, are the star of the menu at chef Nikki Tran's Kậu Ba Quán . At first glance, it resembles any of the hundreds of quán nhậu, or open-air restaurants meant for plentiful eating and drinking, in Ho Chi Minh City, colloquially referred to as Saigon. A Saigon native, Tran serves the prawns in the quintessential Vietnamese preparation: rang muối, or salt-roasted. Sporting a slight char, these typically come with a dipping ramekin of simply salt, pepper and a whole calamansi. But, as a result of Tran's time in Houston in the early 2000s at the onset of the Vietnamese-Cajun crawfish movement , the hulking crustaceans here also come in a Gulf Coast version: generously slathered in Cajun garlic butter atop potato halves, corn and spiced … [Read more...] about Chef Nikki Tran is building a culinary bridge between Houston and Saigon

February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

New polling data shows that Texans are generally pretty down for legalizing weed . A survey from the University of Houston's Hobby School of Public Affairs released this week found that 67 percent of Texans "support legislation that would make the recreational use of marijuana for any purpose legal for those age 21 and older." Attitudes towards legalizing recreational cannabis appear to vary by race: according to the study's findings, " 73 percent of Latino, 66 percent of Black and 62 percent of white Texans support this legislation," referring to proposed recreational weed legalization laws. Hobby School researchers also found that 82 percent of Texans "support legislation that would make the use of marijuana legal for a wide range of medical purposes with a prescription, with 56 percent strongly in support of medical marijuana." Texas also appears to be in favor of reducing criminal penalties for marijuana use and possession. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 26 With family and best friends -- and a throng of passersby -- to witness their joy, John Sims and Lindsey Tate were married Saturday at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Performed by the groom's best friend, the brief ceremony took place at 5 p.m. in a hospital atrium called The Park. With its huge ceilings, plants and grand staircase, it provided a welcoming spot for the Baytown couple to say their vows. About 35 or 40 friends and relatives turned out for the event, but as the wedding party came into place and Tate descended the staircase with her father, an impromptu crowd of cancer patients hooked to IV poles, doctors, nurses and visitors gathered around, said Nicole Tate, the bride's mother. Texas veterans vow to protect the state’s hemp market as one state lawmaker hopes to crack down

February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

LEANDER — Texas veterans are working to protect the state’s hemp market — and push to expand the state’s medical marijuana program — at the state Capitol during this year’s legislative session. The veterans and their supporters say they need access to the hemp product known as delta-8 to treat issues such as chronic pain, traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. Delta-8 is widely available throughout Texas and, like marijuana, can create a feeling of euphoria. “So many veterans are using these products and reporting good results,” said Dave Bass, an Army veteran of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom who is diagnosed with PTSD. He’s also a longtime advocate in the legislative push for accessible, affordable THC products. Most states, including Texas, legalized hemp production following federal changes in 2018 that removed the plant from the list of illegal controlled substances. The hemp plant has a lower amount of tetrahydrocannabinol, or … [Read more...] about Texas veterans vow to protect the state’s hemp market as one state lawmaker hopes to crack down
