Defending champion Gagan Sethi lived up to his top billing and won the 2018 JK Tyre Hornbill Motor Rally alongside co-driver Sabatullah Khan. The duo completed the 55 km TSD rally with a penalty of 29 seconds to emerge victorious. Following them in the Open category, at some distance, were other national level competitors. The second place was taken by Bijo Awom and Chandrasekhar (1:44 minutes penalty), while Tali Akang and Nirav Mehta finished third with a penalty of 2:05 minutes. The event was flagged off from IG Stadium, following which participants traversed dirt roads, broken tarmac and winding hilly roads around Kohima. The drivers crossed seven time controls before making it to the finish in Kisama village. The 29 competitors who will be a part of the 2018 JK Tyre Hornbill Rally today, December 2, lined up at the Hotel Heritage in Kohima for registration and scrutiny. Cars being prepped for scrutiny at the 2018 JK Tyre Hornbill Rally These participants will compete in two classes. The first of these is the Open class with nine contenders. The other 20 competitors will make up the North East categories. They will cover 55 kms tomorrow during the TSD rally tomorrow. Only two of time controls will be disclosed. The event is expected to be tricky as the rallyists will not be given prior information about the course or the triple cautions. They will be handed the tulips just a minute before the flag-off, making their tast that much more challenging. This means that the navigator's role will be vital in this event. The FMSCI approved rally will be flagged-off tomorrow at 8:30 am from the Indira Gandhi Stadium and end at the Heritage Village Kisama in the outskirts of Kohima. The ninth edition of the Hornbill Rally will begin on Sunday, December 2 in Kohima, Nagaland. The event returns in a larger format this year with more events being added to the existing format. The three day event will start at with the Time, Speed and Distance (TSD) rally that this event has been known for so far. This year's event will be run over a distance of 55 kms, starting from the IG Stadium and ending at the Kisama Heritage village. The next day will see the debut of one of the two new events being organised this year. This is an off roading event that will see top drivers from the North-East and India negotiate six obstacles spread across a 1.5 km long course. Also being organised on the final day is a World War 2 Peace Rally to pay homage to the people martyred during the Battle of Kohima. Family members of soldiers who fought in this battle will be part of a parade in vintage cars and jeeps which will make its way towards the war cemetery.
