Date set for 2023 Australian Grand Prix
Listen to this article The Australian Grand Prix Corporation confirmed today that next year's event will run from March 30-April 2, with Formula 1 on track from March 31. That will make the race the third round of the Formula 1 world championship for the second year running. While having traditionally been the opening round throughout the Melbourne era, the event is now set to float in the first three rounds of each season as part of a recently-signed contract extension . As part of the new agreement Albert Park is only guaranteed five season-openers between now and 2035 . The AGP will open the 2024 and 2025 seasons with the other three opening slots to be spread across the decade that follows. The 2023 race, meanwhile, is shaping up as a significant one given the likelihood of there being a Melbourne-born driver on the grid for the first time. Oscar Piastri is widely expected to end up in a race seat next season with McLaren which, would make him the third … [Read more...] about Date set for 2023 Australian Grand Prix
Reliability issues have cost Alfa Romeo a ‘fortune in terms of points’
With more retirements than any other team, Fred Vasseur admits Alfa Romeo are leaking points they cannot afford to drop. Valtteri Bottas has failed to finish three grands prix this season, all the result of reliability issues, while his team-mate Zhou Guanyu is up to five, only one of which was a crash . From cooling problems to gearboxes to power loss to fuel system failures, the Alfa Romeo team-mates have recorded a range of reasons for their DNFs. Team boss Vasseur concedes that has cast a shadow over what he believes is progress from the Hinwil-based team. “I think we did a step forward,” Vasseur said as per Autosport. “We did a good step in terms of pure performance, due to the different factors. “As always, it’s never one thing. “I think the Ferrari engine did a step forward. We did the same job on the chassis side also. And I think that Valtteri and Zhou are performing. Altogether, it’s a good step. “Now, in terms of results, we had also some issues … [Read more...] about Reliability issues have cost Alfa Romeo a ‘fortune in terms of points’
Helmut Marko disagrees with claim Ferrari are faster than Red Bull
Helmut Marko has refuted suggestions that Ferrari have the faster car, but that doesn’t mean he believes Red Bull’s is ahead. Although Red Bull are dominating this year’s championship standings, well ahead of Ferrari on both logs, the numbers don’t tell the full story. Ferrari’s F1-75, especially in the hands of Charles Leclerc, has often been the pace-setter with the Monégasque taking seven pole positions. But when it comes to Sundays, that’s when it goes wrong for Ferrari which has allowed Red Bull to seize the advantage time and again, Max Verstappen up to eight wins for the season with Sergio Perez on one. Three of Verstappen’s wins, Spain, Baku and France, came after Leclerc retired while running P1 while another, Hungary, saw him take advantage after Ferrari dropped the ball with Leclerc’s strategy. But while it is fair to say that Red Bull have benefitted from Ferrari’s reliability issues and strategy blunders , Marko believes there is very little between … [Read more...] about Helmut Marko disagrees with claim Ferrari are faster than Red Bull
Max Verstappen avoids brake dust problems thanks to Red Bull design
Max Verstappen says unlike some of his rivals he doesn’t have an issue with brake dust being blown into his face, but that’s thanks largely to the design of his RB18. Sebastian Vettel raised the issue after the Austrian Grand Prix as the four-time World Champion climbed out of his AMR22 to face the cameras with his face covered in black dust. He revealed it was the brake dust coming off his front brakes . He told Sky F1: “To be honest with you, that’s something I think they need to work on because you know, where the design of the brake ducts [is] this year, the front axle is blowing all the brake dust into our faces – and it’s not good. Obviously, carbon dust is not really something healthy to breathe in.” But while it is a problem for Aston Martin, Verstappen says he hasn’t experienced it with Red Bull which he puts down to the design of the front brakes. “Just depends how you design your drums, basically,” he said as per GPFans. “Some have it designed in a way … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen avoids brake dust problems thanks to Red Bull design
Otmar Szafnauer has ‘absolutely no worries’ about Fernando Alonso’s focus
Team boss Otmar Szafnauer has “absolutely no worries” about Fernando Alonso mentally checking out of Alpine before the end of the season. Alonso shocked many in the paddock when he announced, as he headed off for his summer break, he would be leaving the team to take Sebastian Vettel’s vacant seat at Aston Martin. His decision surprised Alpine too as the team thought they had been closing in on a one-year extension with the double former World Champion, Szafnauer previously revealing he had no warning. But despite the untimely announcement, at least on Alpine’s part, the team are confident Alonso will be fully committed through to his very last lap as an Alpine driver. “I have absolutely no worries about the rest of the season,” Szafnauer said, quoted by Autosport. “Our goals are pretty clear. We want to finish at least fourth in the Constructors’ Championship. I think third is a step too far. “ Fernando realises that too. He’s a professional. He’s a … [Read more...] about Otmar Szafnauer has ‘absolutely no worries’ about Fernando Alonso’s focus
Toto Wolff ‘loves’ that F1 legacy fans ‘hate’ new direction of the sport
Toto Wolff “loves” how Formula 1’s social conscience has riled older fans over the last decade, from going green to taking a knee. Formula 1 courted controversy amongst its fans when, in 2013, the sport bade farewell to the old-school 2.4 litre V8 engines to welcome hybrid technology. Introducing 1.6-litre V6 hybrid engines that incorporated energy recovery systems the following season, the sport took its first of many steps towards becoming greener. Since then, F1 has announced sustainability plans to have a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. Naysayers said at the time the quieter power units would be the end of Formula 1, but instead the sport’s following has grown in the last 10 years. In 2020, the drivers began to take a knee in a worldwide fight against racism and discrimination, while this year they have adopted a new campaign called ‘Drive It Out’ in response to increasing incidents of abuse online and at events. That, coupled with the likes of Lewis Hamilton and … [Read more...] about Toto Wolff ‘loves’ that F1 legacy fans ‘hate’ new direction of the sport
