A Tale of Two Mercedes and the Post Ranch Inn
It is a well-known fact that I am a socialist trying to get by in a capitalist society. Yes, I have more than my fair share of old cars. To each according to his need, as they say. Also, I am reminded that while money can’t buy happiness, neither can poverty. On the heels of a thought-inducing recent birthday, such were the weighty concerns as I disembarked in San Diego to attend the launch of the new electric Smart. And to celebrate the big Six-Oh. Seems like only 30 years ago I was in these pages celebrating my 30th with a car company’s help, but there you are. After all those years, I’ve gotten older but still haven’t joined America’s 1 percent. I came prepared to dismiss the new Smart. I’ve never found previous models from the Mercedes protectorate efficient enough to justify their utility-limiting dimensions and uninspired chassis, except where urban parking was a primary concern. For that I’ve given Smart my top award for New York City … [Read more...] about A Tale of Two Mercedes and the Post Ranch Inn
2018 Chevrolet Cruze revolutionizes the home office
March 10, 2018 by Gary Grant Leave a Comment This will not be your usual new car review. It has been said in recent years that there are no bad cars any more. It is more about individual taste. Like just about every car built these days, the Chevrolet Cruze is a good car. The good car, a close cousin of the nice car, can be very difficult to write about, as there is nothing much that sets it apart from the rest of the good cars. The addition of a diesel engine gives the Cruze an economically geeky edge over some of the other small sedans on the market. So what I am writing about? Well, perhaps the answer is not so much what, but where. As I write this, I am sitting in a random parking lot in south Oshawa, with my tablet wedged between the steering wheel and my ample belly. Writing an automotive story. I just took a little break from working to watch an episode of Colony on Netflix on my tablet. Great show. I’m going to go way out on a limb here and suggest that where modern … [Read more...] about 2018 Chevrolet Cruze revolutionizes the home office

Australia: FIA post-race press conference
Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen reflect on an eventful start to the 2018 season. PODIUM INTERVIEWS (Conducted by Mark Webber) Q: Sebastian, 48th victory, 100th podium, a couple behind Alain Prost, so run us through it – what a race. Sebastian Vettel: Yeah, obviously pretty good. We got a bit lucky with the safety car but yeah, really enjoyed it. A great turnout today, you saw in the grandstands, I really enjoyed the lap back in. And for the race, I mean my start, I was hoping for it to be a little bit better, but it didn’t really work, so I had to settle for third. And then, towards the end of that first stint I lost a little bit the connection to Lewis and Kimi ahead. I was struggling a little bit with the tyres. I felt happier with the soft tyres, with the yellow tyres at the end, for the second stint. Obviously I was praying for a safety and there was a car that stopped in Turn 4 and I was like ‘no, it’s not coming out’ … [Read more...] about Australia: FIA post-race press conference
