McLaren Services, a division of the McLaren Formula 1 team, has been fined £650,000 after being found guilty of two health and safety charges resulting in the death of senior engineer David Oldham. Inspecting the Formula 1 team’s motorhome in October 2016, the mobile building that’s taken to grand prix weekends, he fell from height. Found on the floor of the warehouse, the 55-year-old was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford where he passed away the following day. During a trial at Reading Crown Court, the jury heard that Oldham had been working on a level with exposed edges while inspecting the motorhome’s ceiling, something he’d already done five times prior. The court learnt that while people had been advised to stay two metres from the edge, that was not in the official written document. McLaren were found guilty of two health and safety violations, the company’s McLaren Services’ division handed a £650,000 fine. Sentencing Judge Amjad Khan said as per the … [Read more...] about McLaren fined £650,000 over the death of a senior engineer in 2016

Max Verstappen not interested in where he ranks among the Formula 1 greats
Following his record-breaking 2022 campaign, Max Verstappen says he doesn’t bother with statistics, he just wants to get on with the job of winning “more races and potentially championships”. Storming to his second Drivers’ Championship title last season, Verstappen set a new record for the most wins in a single season, 15, while also writing his name in the history books for overturning the biggest deficit, 46 points, to win a World title. And that’s just two of the records he broke last season. His numbers had former World Champion Nico Rosberg declaring the Dutchman is “already” one of the greatest of all time, “if you look at the statistics.” Those include 35 race wins, putting him sixth on the overall list for the most F1 victories, 77 podiums, 20 pole positions and two World titles. This year he’s the favourite for the title, which would him bring him into line with the likes of Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna and Jackie Stewart as a triple World Champion. The stats, … [Read more...] about Max Verstappen not interested in where he ranks among the Formula 1 greats
Lewis Hamilton reveals future space trip around the Moon with Elon Musk
Lewis Hamilton has revealed he has been promised a trip to space from Space X CEO and the second-wealthiest man in the world Elon Musk. As an F1 driver, Hamilton is more than accustomed to moving at high speeds but it is nothing compared to the velocity needed for a ship to break free of Earth’s atmosphere. More than 60 years after humans first landed on the moon, space voyages are no longer just for those trained at NASA and now more and more celebrities are getting the chance to see the Earth from up high. While Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin company has so far made it to 100km, accepted as the the altitude at which outer space begins, Musk is looking to one-up his old foe with trips not just into space but around the Moon. Late last year, Musk’s Space X company announced that they would be taking their first passenger, Dennis Tito, around the lunar body and it seems Hamilton is next in line. George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
George Russell was not satisfied with his front row position, stating he believed his lap was good enough to secure him pole. It was quite the turnaround of fortune for both Mercedes drivers with Russell securing P2 while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start one place further back in Melbourne. This result comes after CEO and team principal Toto Wolff warned not to expect “miracles” before the Imola upgrade package but there was every suggestion the W14 had found some previously hidden pace in Albert Park. As with every other team, it was oftentimes a case of quantity not quality with the soft tyre proving particularly hard to warm up and with an ever-present, but ultimately hollow, threat of rain in the air. With Sergio Perez out in Q1, the battle for the front row slots opened up but few would have predicted it would have been Russell to take it, moving into P2 with one of the final laps of the session. It represents Russell’s best starting position since the 2022 … [Read more...] about George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’
Jenson Button criticises Sergio Perez quali approach after early retirement
Jenson Button has criticised the approach of Sergio Perez after the Mexican caused a red flag just minutes into qualifying in Melbourne. Perez’s horror Saturday continued into Q1 when the Red Bull man again lost it going into Turn 3, a problem he had frequently experienced during FP3. Any hope that his woes in the morning session would be at an end were quickly extinguished when he found himself beached in the gravel and unable to continue. It means that, unless there are any grid penalties, Perez will start Sunday’s race from last, his lowest qualifying spot since the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix. 2009 World Champion Button, who twice started on pole in Melbourne, criticised the approach of Perez, suggesting he should have built up his lap more. “That’s game over for him but that surprises me,:” he said during a commentary stint on Sky Sports F1. “He had a tough FP3, but you build up to it. “He’s got the quickest car out there – don’t go and put it on the line in the second … [Read more...] about Jenson Button criticises Sergio Perez quali approach after early retirement
A key inflation gauge tracked by the Fed slowed in February
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Reserve's favored inflation gauge slowed sharply last month, an encouraging sign in the Fed's yearlong effort to cool price pressures through steadily higher interest rates. Friday’s report from the Commerce Department showed that consumer prices rose 0.3% from January to February, down from a 0.6% increase from December to January. Measured year-over-year, prices rose 5%, slower than the 5.3% annual increase in January. Excluding volatile food and energy prices, so-called core inflation rose 0.3% from January and 4.6% from a year earlier. Both were slowdowns from the previous month. The Fed is believed to pay particular attention to the core measure as a gauge of underlying inflation pressures. Taken as a whole, Friday's figures show that inflation pressures, though easing gradually, still maintain a grip on the economy. Daughter of ex-U.S. intelligence director sentenced to 35 years for murder
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 The dog barked at 3:25 a.m. Zeba Rasmussen ran down her stairs and saw three men, including the police, through the window pane. "Is this the home of Yousuf Rasmussen?" one of them asked. That moment started three years of heartbreak and horror for the Maryland physician, her family and the many friends of her 24-year-old son - a new life that played out in private even as the way he was killed in 2020 played out in public. He had been stabbed in the neck, police charged, by Sophia Negroponte, the daughter of former U.S. director of national intelligence John Negroponte. The prosecution against her ended Friday, when Montgomery County Circuit Judge Terrence McGann sentenced Sophia Negroponte to 35 years prison for second-degree murder during a two-hour hearing that, for the first time in the case, shined more attention on the victim than the defendant. McGann himself, who had … [Read more...] about Daughter of ex-U.S. intelligence director sentenced to 35 years for murder
UN food chief: Billions needed to avert unrest, starvation
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Without billions of dollars more to feed millions of hungry people, the world will see mass migration, destabilized countries, and starving children and adults in the next 12 to 18 months, the head of the Nobel prize-winning U.N. World Food Program warned Friday. David Beasley praised increased funding from the United States and Germany last year, and urged China, Gulf nations, billionaires and other countries “to step up big time.” In an interview before he hands the reins of the world’s largest humanitarian organization to U.S. ambassador Cindy McCain next week, the former South Carolina governor said he’s “extremely worried” that WFP won’t raise about $23 billion it needs this year to help millions of needy people “Right at this stage, I’ll be surprised if we get 40% of it, quite frankly,” he said. Last year, Beasley raised $14.2 billion for WFP, more … [Read more...] about UN food chief: Billions needed to avert unrest, starvation
Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
Listen to this article The Spaniard was flicked from his Tech3 GASGAS in the closing stages of FP2 at the Algarve International Circuit’s Turn 10 last Friday. He sickeningly hit a tyre barrier that was not protected by an air fence and suffered fractures to his jaw and back, as well as trauma to his lungs. Espargaro was airlifted to hospital in Faro that Friday before being transferred to Barcelona, where he underwent surgery on his jaw fracture. Speaking during the world feed broadcast of this morning’s Argentina Grand Prix FP1 session, Tech3 boss Poncharal offered a positive update on Espargaro’s condition. “I’ve got very good news, because clearly Pol is so full of life and so willing to come back that he was feeling a bit down the past few days being alone in an intensive care room without the possibility to get out of bed,” Poncharal began. “And when you know him, it must be painful. The good news is he’s been transferred to a normal room, with no more … [Read more...] about Pol Espargaro out of ICU and walking after violent Portugal MotoGP crash
