HIV/AIDS education, discrimination prevention and universal healthcare are key factors in lowering HIV infection rates, Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said. He was speaking to a session of the 50th UNAIDS Program Coordinating Board (PCB) in Geneva. This year, Thailand has been granted chairmanship of the session taking place on June 21-24 at the headquarters of the World Health Organisation (WHO), deputy government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul said yesterday. Mr Anutin said Thailand has been trying to raise awareness about how HIV remains a threat to global public health. In addressing the threat, Thailand said it is important for teenagers to learn about safe sex and how to protect themselves from sexually transmissible infections such as HIV. Additionally, Thailand is encouraging many countries to follow in its footsteps by initiating a government-sponsored universal health care scheme that is accessible to all, Mr Anutin said. … [Read more...] about Anutin maps out strategy in Geneva against HIV

Lawsuit challenges Missouri voting aid restrictions
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — Civil rights activists sued Missouri on Wednesday over a decades-old law that prohibits volunteers from offering ballot-booth help to multiple voters who have physical disabilities or are unable to read or write. The federal lawsuit contends Missouri's limits on voter assistance violate federal voting law and should be struck down. It's the latest of dozens of voting-related lawsuits across the U.S., as election procedures have come under increased scrutiny both from those seeking to guarantee access and ensure integrity. The federal Voting Rights Act allows people who have disabilities or are unable to read or write to choose someone to help them vote. A 1977 Missouri law outlines a similar procedure but says no one can assist more than one voter per election unless they are an election judge or helping immediate family members. Violations of state election laws can result in up to a year imprisonment and up to a $2,500 fine. "This lawsuit seeks … [Read more...] about Lawsuit challenges Missouri voting aid restrictions

After year of violence, US schools try to tame tensions
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The first week of school was supposed to mark a triumphant return to classrooms at San Francisco’s Everett Middle School after more than a year of distance learning. But as computer science teacher Yesi Castro-Mitchell welcomed a class of sixth graders last fall, a student started punching her, again and again. Castro-Mitchell wrapped her arms around her head and hoped for the blows to stop. She remembers the stunned silence in her classroom as other students witnessed the assault. The teacher suffered a concussion, a dislocated jaw, chipped teeth and hearing loss in her left ear that now requires a hearing aid. Across America, one of the nation’s most difficult academic years was also one of the most violent. Experts who track school behavior nationwide said fights and other aggressive behavior, including shootings, appear to have increased. Now, … [Read more...] about After year of violence, US schools try to tame tensions
In snubbing House panel, Daniel Snyder may have increased his legal peril
Washington Commanders owner Daniel Snyder successfully avoided the fate of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who fielded two and a half hours of questions during a congressional hearing Wednesday, simply by refusing to take part. But in doing so, Snyder may have compounded his legal peril and complicated the reckoning the House Committee on Oversight and Reform is determined to have over the Washington's NFL franchise's workplace issues, which it has spent eight months investigating. Snyder soon is expected to be served with a subpoena to give a sworn deposition to the committee next week, as Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the chairwoman of the committee, announced. Congressional committee depositions are conducted privately, with lawyers for both parties of the committee present, as well as the person being deposed and his or her lawyer. The interview is transcribed in full; it may be videotaped, as well. It's up to the committee to decide whether to make the transcript and/or … [Read more...] about In snubbing House panel, Daniel Snyder may have increased his legal peril
Senators reach bipartisan compromise on gun violence bill backed by Texas Sen. John Cornyn
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate bargainers reached agreement Tuesday on a bipartisan gun violence bill, potentially teeing up final passage by week's end on an incremental but landmark package that would stand as Congress’ response to mass shootings in Texas and New York that shook the nation. Lawmakers released the 80-page bill nine days after agreeing to a framework for the plan and 29 years after Congress last enacted major firearms curbs. It cleared an initial procedural hurdle by 64-34, with 14 Republicans joining all 48 Democrats and two allied independents in voting yes. That strongly supported a prediction by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of approval later this week. Passage by the Democratic-led House could follow quickly. Though Republicans blocked tougher restrictions sought by Democrats, the accord marks an election-year breakthrough on an issue that pits the GOP's staunch gun-owning and rural voters against Democrats' urban-centered backers of firearms curbs. … [Read more...] about Senators reach bipartisan compromise on gun violence bill backed by Texas Sen. Ukrainian army to leave battered city to avoid encirclement

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — After weeks of ferocious fighting, Ukrainian forces will retreat from a besieged city in the country's east to avoid encirclement, a regional governor said Friday. The city of Sievierodonetsk, the administrative center of the Luhansk region, has faced relentless Russian bombardment. Ukrainian troops fought the Russians in house-to-house battles before retreating to a huge chemical factory on the city's edge, where they holed up in its sprawling underground structures. In recent days, Russian forces have made gains around Sievierodonetsk and the neighboring city of Lysychansk, on a steep bank across the river, in a bid to encircle Ukrainian forces. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said that the Ukrainian troops have been given the order to leave Sievierodonetsk to prevent that. “We will have to pull back our guys,” he said. “It makes no sense to stay … [Read more...] about Ukrainian army to leave battered city to avoid encirclement

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy hailed the decision of EU leaders as vindication of his nation's four-month fight against Russia's aggression and said he was determined to ensure Ukraine retained the ability to decide if it belonged in Europe or under Moscow's influence. “This war began just when Ukraine declared its right to freedom. To its choice of its future. We saw it in the European Union," Zelenskyy told the nation in a televised address late Thursday. “That is why this decision of the EU is so important, motivates us … [Read more...] about Ukrainians cheer nation’s EU candidacy amid wartime woes
