Lewis Hamilton was back behind the wheel of the Mercedes W13 as he completed tyre testing at Paul Ricard on Thursday. The seven-time World Champion took part in a day of testing for Pirelli to help them with their 2023 compounds in France, following on from team-mate George Russell’s work on Wednesday. This was the first on-track action Hamilton has had so far in 2023, with last year’s Mercedes getting another run on-track – after the Briton failed to register a win in a season for the first time in his illustrious career as the car struggled with porpoising. Hamilton spent the day testing new Pirelli rubber around Le Castellet, which has been dropped from the Formula 1 calendar in 2023, after a new deal was not agreed to keep France on the schedule. Mercedes posted photos and videos of their drivers catching up with their mechanics before taking to the track for the first time this year, as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season by their standards in 2022. … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton hits the track for first time this season at Pirelli tyre test

Pat Symonds spotted an early sign that Red Bull were ‘on top’ of porpoising problems
Pat Symonds says as soon as he saw the floor of the Red Bull RB18 back in pre-season testing last year, he knew they were “on top” of F1’s porpoising problems. Last season Formula 1 welcomed the arrival of brand new cars onto the grid, the new generation feature simpler wings and using ground effect aerodynamics to create downforce. Instead of the car being pushed onto the ground, by using ground effect aerodynamics it is effectively sucked. And that, well, sucked for some teams. Mercedes led the way when it came to porpoising, their W13 suffering with more bouncing then most of their rivals. That had team boss Toto Wolff calling for changes, citing the long-term effect of the bouncing on the health of his drivers. One team that was opposed to the FIA stepping in was Red Bull, Christian Horner saying each individual team should resolve their own issues . It was easy for him to say, Red Bull had no bouncing at all. Symonds, F1’s chief technical officer, wasn’t surprised by … [Read more...] about Pat Symonds spotted an early sign that Red Bull were ‘on top’ of porpoising problems
Dixon: Ganassi found “two big things” to improve IndyCar form
Listen to this article In a season in which Team Penske-Chevrolet landed nine wins, Ganassi took only four – notwithstanding the fact that one came in the Indianapolis 500. And while Dixon, Alex Palou and Marcus Ericsson finished third, fifth and sixth in the final points table, none of them entered the 2022 finale with a truly realistic shot at the title. For Dixon, who won the street races in Toronto and Nashville, Ganassi’s weak spot was clear. “I think the outlier was definitely road courses, where we had inconsistency either between the cars or in general,” he said. “None of us got a pole, and I would say right now the road course kind of tire combination is probably Alex's specialty, he's extremely good at it, and to see him not get a pole I think means definitely something that was missing. “There were definitely some instances where we made pretty heavy mistakes, I think, on the #9 car side – just not being in the right configuration or doing silly things that … [Read more...] about Dixon: Ganassi found “two big things” to improve IndyCar form

Farrell Penguin Press. 738 pp. $40 - - - In his 47 years in the United States Senate - from the high promise of his brother Jack's presidency to the hard slog of Barack Obama's first months in the White House - Edward M. Kennedy accomplished as much as anyone who ever served in that body. During that half-century, Kennedy's large extended family was at the center of a cascade of unimaginable tragedies, including his brothers' assassinations, his near-fatal plane crash, cancer diagnoses for two of his children, divorce, drug addiction, sex scandals and the premature deaths of several other relatives. Perhaps most important, Ted Kennedy emerged after his brother Robert's death in 1968 as the chief torchbearer of American liberalism, even as it came under attack from an insurgent political right. Kennedy's rich, dramatic, consequential life … [Read more...] about Book World: Two books capture the messy, monumental life of Ted Kennedy
RLL engineering team “more focused” in 2023, says Rahal
Listen to this article Sordo spoke to Motorsport.com during this offseason about wishing to apply his 22-year Formula 1 stint at teams including Red Bull and McLaren to the RLL setup , and Graham Rahal has confirmed that the Italian’s influence can already be felt. RLL, which has moved into a new headquarters in Brownsburg, IN., struggled last year to make its presence felt on a regular basis across the IndyCar season, despite having a solid engineering braintrust. Graham Rahal was a model of consistency from 2015 to 2021, finishing inside the Top 10 in points every year, but last year he slipped to 11 th with just two top-five finishes. Rookie teammate Christian Lundgaard scored a podium but only one other top-five, although there was mid-season revival for the team in terms of pace, if not finishes. Rahal told media on Wednesday, “I feel really good about where we're at. I was thinking about this exact kind of media conference last year, and I was pretty reserved in … [Read more...] about RLL engineering team “more focused” in 2023, says Rahal
