Leonard N. Fleming The Detroit News Published 12:00 AM EST Nov 12, 2018 Moments after he conceded last week in his Senate campaign, Republican challenger John James declared "we're not done" in a speech that was elusive about his political future. If his legion of political admirers have anything to say about it, he's not. Though James, 37, just lost a closer-than-expected race to Democratic U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, political experts and Republicans around the state are already plotting out his options for elected office. Stabenow won 52 percent to 46 percent for James, a political novice. The Farmington Hills businessman whom President Donald Trump has called a "rising star" is being urged to consider making another Senate run, seeking a congressional seat and possibly even running for governor in four or eight years. Poll: Whitmer beating Schuette on issues in governor’s race
Jonathan Oosting The Detroit News Published 11:14 PM EDT Oct 3, 2018 Lansing — Democrat Gretchen Whitmer continues to lead Republican Bill Schuette in the race to be Michigan’s next governor, according to a new statewide poll showing voters prefer her plans on issues like roads, education and health care. The survey of 600 likely voters, conducted for The Detroit News and WDIV roughly five weeks out from the Nov. 6 election, suggests Schuette has gained little ground on Whitmer in the past month. The attorney general remains relatively unpopular, much like GOP President Donald Trump, who has endorsed him. Whitmer leads Schuette by 12 percentage points, according to the Sept. 20-Oct. 2 Glengariff Group Inc. poll, which has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points. The Lansing-based firm pegged her lead at 14 points in early September. Kathleen Gray Detroit Free Press Published 10:00 p.m. UTC Jul 24, 2018 Before even one confirmation hearing for U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been scheduled, abortion rights supporters and opponents are preparing for the day when access to abortion could be severely restricted or the procedure outright banned again in Michigan. “Obviously, it’s no secret that we’ve been hoping to overturn Roe v. Wade for 45 years,” said Genevieve Marnon, legislative director for Right to Life of Michigan. “The possibility has definitely crossed our minds. The possibility of replacing Supreme Court justices is on our minds.” If a case rises to the U.S. Supreme Court that leads the justices to overturn the landmark case that legalized abortion in 1973, Michigan would revert to the last abortion law on the books – a 1931 law that made performing an abortion a felony, unless it was to save the life of the mother.
