Soldiers of the armed forces of Ukraine take part in military exercises in Odessa region on Wednesday. The National Economic and Social Development Council says the ongoing war in Ukraine is becoming a greater geopolitical risk next year. (AFP photo) Structural changes in geopolitics are likely to create more risks for the Thai economy next year, warns the state planning unit's chief. Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), said the ongoing war in Ukraine is expected to become more complex and unpredictable, potentially becoming a greater geopolitical risk in 2023. "Several factors are driving this elevated risk, starting with structural changes in the geopolitical environment that includes a more competitive world order, rising economic inequality and political dysfunction globally," Mr Danucha said. He said geopolitics will lead to a disruption of the supply chain, which will inevitably affect Thai manufacturing. … [Read more...] about NESDC sees rising global risks in 2023

U.S. Recession Fears Darken Outlook For Global Growth
Manufacturing growth is slowing worldwide as China's COVID-19 curbs and Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupt supply chains and keep inflation at the highest in years, while the growing risk of a U.S. recession poses a new threat to the global economy. Gauges of factory activity released Thursday in Japan, Britain, the eurozone, and the United States all softened in June, with U.S. producers reporting the first outright drop in new orders in two years in the face of slumping consumer and business confidence. S&P Global's flash U.S. Composite PMI Output Index, which tracks the manufacturing and services sectors, dropped to 51.2 this month from a final reading of 53.6 in May and the slowest growth pace in five months. The manufacturing component dropped to 52.4, the lowest in nearly two years, from 57 in May and was notably weaker than the estimate of 56 in a Reuters poll of economists. "Business confidence is now at a level which would typically herald an economic downturn, … [Read more...] about U.S. Recession Fears Darken Outlook For Global Growth
Thailand at risk of fuel crunch with imported gas too pricey
PTT’s liquefied natural gas terminal at Map Ta Phut Industrial estate in Rayong province. (Photo: Apichart Jinakul) The government is curbing imports of liquefied natural gas due to surging prices, potentially putting the country at risk of fuel shortages. State-run importers cut purchases of LNG from the spot market because of skyrocketing prices and limited availability, according to traders. And while they plan to boost purchases of cheaper alternatives, like diesel and fuel oil, the deficit left by cutting LNG may be too large to be filled by other sources, said the traders who didn’t want to be named as they’re not authorised to speak to the media. “We won’t let a fuel shortage happen,” deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said in response to a Bloomberg News inquiry on the prospect of a deficit. Thailand is not struggling to get supplies, she said. Some of the country’s poorer Asian neighbours -- including Pakistan and Sri Lanka -- are in the midst of … [Read more...] about Thailand at risk of fuel crunch with imported gas too pricey
Beware the global ripple effect from Fed rate hike
At its June 14-15 meeting, the Federal Reserve decided to hike its Fed Funds Rate by 75 basis points, the largest single hike since 1994, to 1.5-1.75% in order to tame inflation. In addition, the Fed downgraded its economic growth projection and raised unemployment and inflation rate projections significantly, hinting there will be a substantial hikes to tame continued inflation. We believe the 75 bps hike and further substantial hikes will create a ripple effect worldwide and cause financial crisis and/or recession in the US, Europe and emerging markets. The magnitude depends on the level of inflation and the monetary policy tightening to tame that inflation. To compare the current stage of stagflation with the 1970s era, we studied the development of the US consumer price index in 1970s. The combination of 1) an oil shock, 2) dirty politics, and 3) a weak central bank led to the first wave of high inflation. The Fed had to hike rates to near the rate of inflation, after which … [Read more...] about Beware the global ripple effect from Fed rate hike
India Gorges On Cheap Russian Crude, But Its Fuel Exports At Risk: Russell
Indian oil refiners are sucking up cheap Russian crude, but the risk is that their exports of refined products will eventually attract sanctions from countries determined to cut Russian energy out of global markets. Imports of Russian crude by India hit a record high in May, and will likely rise again in June, according to data compiled by commodity analysts Kpler. India imported 840,645 barrels per day (bpd) of Russian crude in May, up from 388,666 bpd in April and 136,774 bpd in May last year, Kpler data showed. June imports are estimated at 1.05 million bpd, meaning that Russia's share of India's total imports will rise to just under one quarter, a dramatic spike considering that they were around 2% of the total last year. Indian refiners are happy to buy heavily discounted Russian crude, which is being offered at up to $40 a barrel below benchmark Brent crude prices. Russia's crude exports have been targeted by Western countries as part of sanctions aimed at punishing … [Read more...] about India Gorges On Cheap Russian Crude, But Its Fuel Exports At Risk: Russell
