George Russell was not satisfied with his front row position, stating he believed his lap was good enough to secure him pole. It was quite the turnaround of fortune for both Mercedes drivers with Russell securing P2 while his team-mate Lewis Hamilton will start one place further back in Melbourne. This result comes after CEO and team principal Toto Wolff warned not to expect “miracles” before the Imola upgrade package but there was every suggestion the W14 had found some previously hidden pace in Albert Park. As with every other team, it was oftentimes a case of quantity not quality with the soft tyre proving particularly hard to warm up and with an ever-present, but ultimately hollow, threat of rain in the air. With Sergio Perez out in Q1, the battle for the front row slots opened up but few would have predicted it would have been Russell to take it, moving into P2 with one of the final laps of the session. It represents Russell’s best starting position since the 2022 … [Read more...] about George Russell wanted more from qualifying: ‘I was disappointed we didn’t get pole!’

Lewis Hamilton expects third row to be Mercedes’ qualifying ceiling on Saturday
Lewis Hamilton is not hopeful of Mercedes being able to get onto the front two rows of the grid for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend. Hamilton had finished FP1 second fastest, splitting the Red Bull pair of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez at Albert Park in dry conditions, albeit with the session having been interrupted during most of the drivers’ soft tyre runs with a red flag due to safety concerns after the circuit’s GPS system had technical issues. But having made setup tweaks to his Mercedes in time for second practice, the team appeared to struggle for pace by comparison, though it is difficult to read too deeply into the results in FP2 given the majority of the session took place in wet conditions in Melbourne. With Red Bull appearing to hold a clear advantage once again this weekend and Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin nipping at their heels in FP1 and topping FP2, Hamilton is not optimistic about Mercedes being able to muscle in on the fight right at the front … [Read more...] about Lewis Hamilton expects third row to be Mercedes’ qualifying ceiling on Saturday
Texas Republicans swiftly condemn Donald Trump indictment: ‘Utter garbage’
Texas Republicans were quick to react as news surfaced Thursday of a Manhattan grand jury's indictment of former President Donald Trump on charges reportedly stemming from hush money payments made during his 2016 campaign to cover up an extramarital affair. Spoiler alert: They were not happy. Among the swiftest to tear into the indictment was Sen. Ted Cruz , who tweeted: "The Democrat Party's hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds. The 'substance' of this political persecution is utter garbage. This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system." Cruz later called Thursday a "tragic day for our country." Today is an absolute outrage and tragic day for our country. — Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) March 31, 2023 Gov. Greg Abbott also spoke out on Twitter, calling the decision an "abhorrent abuse of power." He added: "The George Soros-supported NYC DA is only furthering the radical liberal agenda to have elections … [Read more...] about Texas Republicans swiftly condemn Donald Trump indictment: ‘Utter garbage’
Texas Republicans quickly blast Donald Trump indictment, calling it “catastrophic” and politically motivated
Some Texas Republicans quickly criticized Donald Trump’s criminal indictment Thursday as a politically motivated catastrophe after it was announced that the former president would face criminal charges. “The Democrat Party’s hatred for Donald Trump knows no bounds. The ‘substance’ of this political persecution is utter garbage,” tweeted U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz . “This is completely unprecedented and is a catastrophic escalation in the weaponization of the justice system.” Republicans, including Trump, have cast the indictment as a political “witch hunt” to discredit the former president ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Recent polls currently favor Trump over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has not yet announced his candidacy. President Joe Biden, a Democrat, is also expected to run again. On his podcast earlier in March, Cruz predicted that arresting Trump would only boost the former president’s appeal among supporters. “This is Political Persecution and Election … [Read more...] about Texas Republicans quickly blast Donald Trump indictment, calling it “catastrophic” and politically motivated
Minneapolis leaders approve agreement to revamp policing
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis City Council on Friday approved an agreement with the state to revamp policing, nearly three years after a city officer killed George Floyd. City officials agreed to negotiate an agreement after the Department of Human Rights issued a blistering report last year that said the police department had engaged in a pattern of race discrimination for at least a decade. The City Council approved the court-enforceable settlement Friday. The state agency launched its investigation shortly after Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on Floyd's neck for 9 1/2 minutes, disregarding the Black man's fading pleas that he couldn't breathe. Floyd's death sparked mass protests that spread around the world. It forced a national reckoning on racial injustice and compelled the Minneapolis Police Department to begin an overhaul. Chauvin was later convicted of … [Read more...] about Minneapolis leaders approve agreement to revamp policing
‘Window into history’: Tapes detail LBJ’s stolen election
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 DALLAS (AP) — The story was a blockbuster: A former Texas voting official was on the record detailing how nearly three decades earlier, votes were falsified to give then-congressman Lyndon B. Johnson a win that propelled the future president into the U.S. Senate. The audio recordings from Associated Press reporter James W. Mangan's interviews for the 1977 story were posted this week on the LBJ Presidential Library and Museum's archival website, Discover LBJ. After Mangan's death in 2015 at the age of 87, his family found the labeled cassette tapes at his San Antonio home and donated them last summer to the library on the campus of the University at Texas at Austin. Luis Salas, the former South Texas election judge, told Mangan for the story: “Johnson did not win that election; It was stolen for him. And I know exactly how … [Read more...] about ‘Window into history’: Tapes detail LBJ’s stolen election
AP WAS THERE: Uncovering Lyndon B Johnson’s stolen election
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 ALICE, Texas (AP) — In 1977, Associated Press reporter James W. Mangan's exclusive interview with a South Texas election judge who detailed certifying false votes for Lyndon B. Johnson nearly three decades earlier made headlines across the country. With the win by an 87-vote margin in the 1948 Democratic primary runoff, Johnson, then a congressman, easily defeated his Republican opponent to take a seat in the U.S. Senate, and he eventually ascended to the presidency. Mangan spent three years pursuing the story, which pulled back the curtain on the victory that had drawn suspicions ever since election officials in rural Jim Wells County announced the discovery of uncounted votes in ballot box known as Box 13. Headlines across the U.S. that accompanied the story included: “Polling Official: Phony Votes Stole ’48 Runoff for LBJ”; “LBJ’s election to Senate ‘stolen’”; … [Read more...] about AP WAS THERE: Uncovering Lyndon B Johnson’s stolen election
Where Houston Astros contract extension talks stand as season begins
The most interesting aspect of Opening Day at Minute Maid Park wasn't Yordan Alvarez's mammoth homer or Houston's bullpen struggles, but rather the comments made by team owner Jim Crane before the Astros lost to the White Sox 3-2. Crane touched on a number of topics when speaking with the media pregame, noting his support of the pitch clock and excitement for the banner-raising ceremony to commemorate the 2022 championship . His comments on the future of the franchise should garner greater attention. Houston's owner is, on the surface, at odds with his current general manager in one regard. While Astros GM Dana Brown embraces the idea of long-term contract extensions for a number of key players—most notably Kyle Tucker—such maneuvers aren't exactly in Crane's playbook. No player in Crane's tenure as owner has signed a contract topping Jose Altuve's $151 million extension signed in 2018. George Springer wasn't retained in January 2021 as he signed a six-year, $150 million … [Read more...] about Where Houston Astros contract extension talks stand as season begins
Alonso leads Leclerc as rain interrupts second practice · RaceFans
Fernando Alonso was quickest in a rain-interrupted second practice session in Melbourne ahead of Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The Aston Martin driver set the fastest time early in the session before rain began to fall around the 15 minute mark, which put a stop to any further improvements on the timing screen. Alonso’s 1’18.887 put him almost half a second quicker than Leclerc’s Ferrari. With clouds drifting over Albert Park threatening rain before the session began, the temperature had dropped significantly compared to the opening hour of practice as the second hour of running got underway. With a 40% risk of rain expected, there was a rush of cars onto the circuit as the green light appeared at the end of the pit lane, drivers dicing for track position over the first two sectors of the lap to secure a clear track to start their runs. Carlos Sainz Jnr won the race to start the first flying lap and he duly set the … [Read more...] about Alonso leads Leclerc as rain interrupts second practice · RaceFans
