Missing the Italian Grand Prix after falling ill with appendicitis and the complications that followed, Alex Albon reckons he need F1’s winter break to regain full fitness. Albon was forced to sit out the Monza race after being hospitalised with appendicitis but, while the surgery was successful, he suffered complications that resulted in respiratory failure . He returned to the grid two weeks later for the Singapore Grand Prix where he told the media he was “coping better than expected”. But with one race after another, six races in seven weeks, his body was never given the time to fully recuperate from the ordeal nor able to regain full fitness. “I would say [I need the] winter to get to 100 percent,” he told Motorsport.com. “We didn’t have the time to train to really get back that fitness, so yes. “But realistically speaking, Singapore was tough, Japan was 75 percent, and after Japan, I felt pretty good.” He finished his first season with Williams unable to add to … [Read more...] about Alex Albon pinpoints the ‘main points opportunity’ that he missed out on in 2022

Nicholas Latifi had a new team mate this year but the result was little different. After another heavy defeat – the worst any driver suffered this year – he finds himself without a place on the 2023 F1 grid . Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Until the 2022 season began Latifi’s only team mate in Formula 1 had been George Russell (aside from a one-off appearance by Jack Aitken). Russell’s pedigree was assured by his status as a Mercedes driver and sure enough he went on to acquit himself superbly alongside no less a talent than Lewis Hamilton this year. So having gone down 15-0 and 19-3 against Russell in qualifying over his first two years as a Williams driver, would Latifi fare any better against Alexander Albon ? No: Latifi only claimed better qualifying positions than his team mate on two occasions. These were at Imola, where Albon’s brakes caught fire, and Silverstone, where he wasn’t able to suss Williams’ upgrade package in time and Latifi … [Read more...] about Latifi suffers heaviest defeat of any driver in 2022 as he bows out of F1 · RaceFans

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHATHAM, Va. - The land came first, 5,557 acres of forest purchased two years after the Revolutionary War by a Virginia slaveholder and future congressman. The mansion came next - a symbol of fortune and power built by enslaved workers, who spent seven years assembling the stately home brick by brick until it was finally finished in 1825. "It's been occupied by a Walter Coles and his wife ever since then," says the latest Walter Coles - the fifth of that name - as he sits in the same parlor his father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather all sat in before him, recounting the history of Coles Hill as his predecessors look down from portraits on all four walls. Coles, 84, is one of countless Americans who still benefit from the wealth accumulated by America's 18th- and 19th-century slaveholders. And his … [Read more...] about Their wealth was built on slavery. Now a new fortune lies underground.
In their first season as team mates last year, newcomer Carlos Sainz Jnr surprisingly out-scored incumbent Charles Leclerc. The latter flipped the result this season. Was this a case of ‘normal service resumed’? Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Not quite. Indeed, 2022 was arguably a more promising campaign for Sainz on the whole, even taking his early setbacks into account. He was never able to make up the deficit which grew as he acclimatised to the F1-75, but ended the season looking much more of a match for his team mate. While Leclerc and the F1-75 clicked immediately, Sainz couldn’t get comfortable at the limit in the car. They finished one-two at the season opener, but Leclerc was far ahead of his team mate when the Safety Car came out. A spate of errors compromised four consecutive difficult races for Sainz. He spun out lap two in Melbourne, crashed out even earlier at Imola along with Daniel Ricciardo, hit the wall again during practice in Miami … [Read more...] about Leclerc asserts his supremacy but Sainz’s improving form should concern him · RaceFans
Sebastian Vettel has recounted a story from his first-ever Formula 1 test, when future team-mate Mark Webber came to his rescue… Vettel’s F1 tenure came to an end at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at the end of November, with the German driver calling time on his illustrious career after making his full-time debut in 2008 after appearances with BMW-Sauber and Toro Rosso in 2007. During his climb into F1, Vettel enjoyed the backing of BMW alongside Red Bull and won the 2004 Formula BMW ADAC championship with 18 wins from 20 races. Part of his reward for this campaign was a test of the Williams FW27 F1 car, with the Grove-based squad enjoying a works relationship with BMW at the time. Vettel, then a slightly-built 18-year-old, showed up at Jerez for his test, and had the chance to work alongside Williams’ full-time race driver Mark Webber on the day. While Vettel and Webber would have a fractious relationship during their time working together at Red Bull years later, that … [Read more...] about Sebastian Vettel reveals how ‘kind’ Mark Webber helped him at first F1 test
Nico Hulkenberg says there’s no way to “force” being comfortable with his new team and car at this early point of their relationship. The veteran German racer makes his full-time racing return with Haas in 2023, having worked as a ‘super-sub’ for the Racing Point/Aston Martin team between 2020 and ’22. Hulkenberg previously raced in F1 between 2010 and 2019, sitting out the 2011 season after being dropped by Williams, but finally got his chance to make his return with Haas as the American-based squad weighed up their options to replace Mick Schumacher. Confirmed in the seat during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend, Hulkenberg made his Haas debut at the post-season tyre test on the Tuesday following the race. Completing 110 laps on the day, Hulkenberg finished 19th of the 24 runners, and spoke afterwards of feeling some ‘human degradation’ during the test as he came to terms with the physical demands of an F1 car after his last appearance as a sub at Aston Martin at the Saudi … [Read more...] about Nico Hulkenberg: Getting comfortable with Haas car cannot be rushed
