"Previously, you'd never have had the steering and dynamics for an S," says product head Gunnar Guthenke. Mercedes-Benz is apparently working on a few new G-Class variants, raising the bar in both performance and luxury. The company carefully avoided making drastic changes to the second-generation G-Class outward appearance. The throwback bodywork conceals an extensively modernized platform, however, with improved chassis dynamics and capable of handling more power."Previously, you'd never have had the steering and dynamics for an S," G-Class product head Gunnar Guthenke said at a recent launch, as quoted by Auto Express. An 'S' edition will presumably bring a significant jump over the new G 63, which delivers 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque from a biturbo V8 -- enough to launch the stocky SUV to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.Guthenke also hinted at a new Maybach edition. Such a model would serve as a follow-up to the G650 Landaulet, a luxurious limited-edition model with a … [Read more...] about Mercedes-Benz hints at new Maybach G-Class, G 63 S variant

The Mazda6 is the first model to receive the connectivity features, starting this summer. Mazda has announced that it will offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on its vehicles starting later this year. The long-awaited move finally addresses the lack of smartphone connectivity in Mazdas, one of the biggest hurdles in attracting new buyers in today's connected age. Mazda was announced as a CarPlay partner three years ago. The system displays and interfaces smartphone apps through the car's infotainment screen. Mazda said on Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show that the first model to receive will be the 2018 Mazda6. CarPlay and Android Auto equipped models will arrive in showrooms this summer, and then propagate to other models. We have seen other technologies, such as G-Vectoring Control, start in the flagship sedan before appearing on the Mazda3 and, as announced in New York as well, the CX-3. However, a press release on Mazda Canada's website seems to contradict the … [Read more...] about Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming to Mazda vehicles

“If it’s not the ultimate off-road vehicle, it’s not the Gelandewagen.”That was from Ian James, head of marketing for the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. And while the big story for the new 2019 model -- still affectionately known as the G-Wagen -- at the Detroit auto show surrounds its interior upgrades, Mercedes didn’t skimp on the off-road goodies either. For one, there’s more space inside. Now that may sound like an on-road benefit, but Mercedes wants you to know the improvement in legroom, shoulder room and elbow room is equally good for bouncing around off-road. The company was also keen to keep the giant grab handle in front of the front passenger for when things get really tipsy. The new G was tested, like the G-Class has been for 39 years, at Mount Schockl near Graz in Austria where the vehicle is produced -- it’s like a Nurburgring for SUVs. Same line, same people, new tooling, by the way. It only shares three parts overall with the … [Read more...] about Do the new Mercedes G-Wagen’s on-road improvements ruin its off-road credibility?
Mercedes-Benz hears your cries that the G-Class hasn’t changed in decades and wants this installation at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan to drive that point home. The stunt, which makes a deliberate nod to “Jurassic Park” and real-life dinosaur and insect fossilization, is intended to speak to the unchanging DNA of the G-Class line even as a new generation is about to be revealed. The piece is composed of a 1979 280 GE angled nose down suspended in 44.4 tons of amber-colored synthetic resin. The casting process was a 90-day endeavor and is the largest installation of its type.Dr. Gunnar Güthenke, Head of the Off-Road Vehicle said in a statement that the project speaks to the nature of the G-Class as a product.“Our cult off-road vehicle has been continuously evolving for nearly 40 years—without losing its character or its core values,” Güthenke said.“Its DNA is stronger than time and then any fashion … [Read more...] about Mercedes-Benz Fossilizes Classic G-Class to Promote the Next-Gen Ute
