· February 9, 2021 ·

As the outfit ramps up preparations for the all-new era of F1, there are suggestions from Maranello that parts of its plan includes a total overhaul of its engine. The Italian team was caught on the backfoot last year when a series of technical directives from the FIA regarding fuel flow measurements led it to suffer a power drop. The lack of competitiveness on the horsepower front, allied to a too draggy car, resulted in Ferrari enduring its worst season in F1 for decades. Ferrari is working on an upgraded engine for 2021 which it hopes will allow it to cut the deficit to the benchmark Mercedes power unit. However, even more ambitious work is being done for next year. According to sources, Ferrari is ready to take a risk on an innovative engine that, if it works, could prove to be a game-changer in the sport. Top 10 F1 to Indy car converts ranked

· February 9, 2021 ·

Romain Grosjean will follow in esteemed footsteps when he makes the switch to U.S. open-wheel racing this season, the well-trodden path from Formula 1 most recently traversed by Marcus Ericsson. But who is the greatest F1-to-Indy convert? Drivers must first have competed in F1 to be eligible for our list, which rules out 1993 McLaren driver Michael Andretti and his 1978 world champion father Mario. The 1988 series champion and 1985 Indianapolis 500 winner Danny Sullivan is also ineligible, his Indy car debut in 1982 coming one year before his single F1 season at Tyrrell, while Juan Pablo Montoya and Sebastien Bourdais each won Indy car titles before moving to F1 and subsequently returning Stateside. When considering the order of the list, F1 achievement isn't factored in - it's purely down to how successfully the driver made the transition to Indy car. Making an instant impression is rewarded, and so too is longevity. On that basis, despite Fernando Alonso’s impressive debut in … [Read more...] about Top 10 F1 to Indy car converts ranked

Dumbreck steps down from Falken’s Nurburgring 24h line-up

· February 12, 2021 ·

The 47-year-old Briton, who raced for Mercedes and Opel in the DTM, will continue his relationship with a team for which he has driven Nissan, Porsche and BMW machinery in an advisory and ambassadorial role. Dumbreck first drove for Falken in a round of the VLN long-distance championship, now the NLS, on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife in 2006 prior to contesting the 24 Hours with the team for the first time in 2007. His best result at the Nurburgring 24 Hours with the Japanese tyre brand's operation was third overall in 2015, sharing a Porsche 911 GT3-R with Wolf Henzler, Martin Ragginger and Alexandre Imperatori. Dumbreck, who stressed that he isn't retiring from the cockpit, explained that he has made the decision to step back from driving duties in conjunction with the team for multiple reasons. "Several things have come together for me to make this decision," he told Motorsport.com. "Last year's race [rescheduled from May to September as a result of the COVID-19 … [Read more...] about Dumbreck steps down from Falken’s Nurburgring 24h line-up

Porsche aces thrilled with first IMSA win of 2020

· October 18, 2020 ·

While the Porsche 911 RSRs finished first and second in the GT Le Mans class of last year’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and amassed six victories, the team appeared snakebit in 2020. This was exemplified last week at a wet Charlotte Roval, when both cars crashed out early from the 100-minute race. Despite setting four pole positions in the first eight races of this season, the two cars between them had landed six podium finishes but no wins. This changed last night at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta when fulltimers Nick Tandy, Fred Makowiecki and enduro extra Matt Campbell came home first, after Augusto Farfus’ leading BMW M8 ran off course in the closing stages. A necessary pitstop to clean grass and dirt from the air intakes and left front wheel of the Rahal Letterman Lanigan-run machine allowed the #911 into the lead. Makowiecki then kept Antonio Garcia in the Corvette C8.R behind him to the checkered flag, surviving a late-race restart, and scored his and … [Read more...] about Porsche aces thrilled with first IMSA win of 2020
