Patricio O’Ward, in his first full IndyCar season, drove the #5 AMSP-Chevy to a pole, four podiums and fourth in the championship, while then-teammate Oliver Askew – replaced for 2021 by Felix Rosenqvist – delivered another podium. With O’Ward beaten only by one driver from each of the ‘Big Three’ teams in IndyCar, Schmidt believes Arrow McLaren SP can tackle them head on. “I wouldn’t say we’re going to replace any team in the top three but I do think we’re ready to make it a Big Four,” he told Motorsport.com. “We saw they were right there in front of us, and we were right there in the mix. “We have really really intelligent people on board who have a great desire to race and to win and with the added McLaren components, we just have to execute. “Kudos to Zak and everyone at McLaren because when COVID hit last year, there were staff layoffs but the seven fulltime engineers assigned to the IndyCar program were kept on, and they managed to get what we wanted to do fully … [Read more...] about Schmidt: Arrow McLaren SP ready to complete IndyCar “Big Four”

VLN faces revolt over latest attempt to slow GT3 cars
Ferrari outfit Wochenspiegel Team Monschau (WTM) announced its exit following the decision by VLN organisers, the DMSB, to implement a five percent power drop for the SP-9, SP-X and SP-Pro classes in the interests of safety. The move, equivalent to robbing the FIA GT3-spec cars that race in these classes of around 25bhp, was announced last week in a newly-issued Balance of Performance ahead of this weekend’s opening round of the series. Another stalwart VLN team, Porsche squad Frikadelli Racing, has also stated it will withdraw from the championship after this year’s Nurburgring 24 Hours if the changes are not reversed. In a statement confirming WTM’s exit, team boss Georg Weiss commented: “By lowering the performance of the GT3 vehicles, safety is not increased, but lessened.” The team’s argument is that by slowing down the GT3 cars on the straights – to the point where they are slower than some cars in the lower classes – it forces drivers to take more risks in the … [Read more...] about VLN faces revolt over latest attempt to slow GT3 cars
GT3 power to be reduced by 10 percent at Nurburgring Nordschleife
This is the result of a thorough analysis by the German motor sport association (DMSB), spearheaded by racing legend Hans-Joachim Stuck. “Manufacturers and most suppliers now understand that they have to do their part in order for the cars to not go faster by several seconds each year,” Stuck says. “The terrible crash at the beginning of the 2015 season was a wake-up call for all of us. Suddenly, we saw that we had reached a certain limit.” “Based on our analysis of the crash and thanks to simulations of the manufacturers we have learned a lot. Now, everybody involved including drivers, manufacturers, the tire industry, the track, officials and DMSB have to work together to put these lessons into practice.” According to DMSB’s plan, engine power in the leading SP7, SP9/GT3, SP-Pro and SP-X categories will be reduced by 10 percent. There will be more aero restrictions, too. For example, a higher base ride height for all competitors. For 2016, tire manufacturers … [Read more...] about GT3 power to be reduced by 10 percent at Nurburgring Nordschleife

[For the full interview check out the video] Mark Miles Photo by: Michael L. Levitt / Motorsport Images Mark, to start with can you sum up the appeal, the USP of IndyCar to audiences? IndyCar racing is fast. We love the diversity; we race on ovals and super speedways as well as short ovals and we race on permanent road courses and we race on temporary street circuits. And I think that diversity is really interesting and a great draw for our fans. We're very competitive; literally a driver can start at the back of the grid and win the race and it happens.Any number of drivers can compete in the championship and be serious contenders. Little teams can compete with big teams. During a race it's wheel to wheel, there's passing and I just … [Read more...] about IndyCar CEO Mark Miles: Future to see third constructor, digital offering
