This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 Before embarking on a racist rampage in Buffalo on Saturday, the alleged gunman left behind a document denying membership in "any organization or group." "I am the sole perpetrator of this attack," he wrote. But the 180-page screed, which authorities are scrutinizing in connection with the massacre, leaves little doubt that the alleged perpetrator, 18-year-old Payton Gendron, belongs to a global fraternity fused by the Internet and fixated on the idea that White people are being intentionally replaced. That idea, once relegated to the fringe, has gained currency on popular right-wing television programs and in the halls of Congress. The theory, known as the "great replacement," has turned white nationalism into an international call to arms. The apocalyptic vision has accumulated followers during the coronavirus pandemic, which has deepened political polarization and … [Read more...] about Buffalo gunman was inspired by racist theory underpinning global carnage

Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer and other stars light up London plays
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 LONDON - I am a glutton for entertainment. My immediate follow-up to seeing 17 New York shows in the weeks before the deadline for the 2022 Tony nominations was traveling to London for 10 days in May - and seeing nine more shows. Extreme theatergoing can have some deleterious side effects, particularly on the lower back. But the upside is the vitamin shot to the psyche administered by a night of splendid acting. On four separate evenings in London, actors of the caliber of Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Nicola Walker and Bertie Carvel reminded me why the stage remains the most powerful conveyance for passionate communion with the work of a great performer. And why, even in a production that might have other shortcomings, a harmonious portrayal at its core is justification enough. In Comer's case, her breathtaking turn underlined all the strengths of a vibrantly assembled … [Read more...] about Ralph Fiennes, Jodie Comer and other stars light up London plays
A set-up “bet” led to Bagnaia’s Le Mans MotoGP pole lap
Listen to this article The Italian set a new lap record on Saturday in France to claim his second-successive pole position and Ducati’s first at Le Mans. Bagnaia led Ducati teammate Jack Miller by 0.069 seconds in the end, but was not confident of being able to fight for pole during the preceding 30-minute FP4 session because he was “struggling a lot” to stop the bike. But he revealed after qualifying that he took “a bet” on set-up with his crew chief and Ohlins suspension technician which ultimately proved successful. “First of all, this morning I was happy, but when it’s cold it’s easier to go fast at this track,” Bagnaia said. “This afternoon in FP4 I was not sure about the pole position because I was struggling a lot. “My biggest problem was to stop the bike, that was the biggest problem. “Then in qualifying we made a bet with my crew chief and my Ohlins technician, because I was not feeling great. “And then after this little modification I started to … [Read more...] about A set-up “bet” led to Bagnaia’s Le Mans MotoGP pole lap
MotoGP riders baffled by “strange” Le Mans grip during practice
Listen to this article Friday’s running at Le Mans was held in bright and warm conditions across both sessions, with Gresini’s Enea Bastianini beating the outright lap record in FP2 to end the day fastest. But across both sessions there were 14 crashes at various points of the track. Le Mans is known for being the circuit with the highest crash rate in years gone by, with an infamous dry Friday in 2018 featuring 109 tumbles across all three classes. But conditions at Le Mans are typically cold, which made Friday’s spills seem unusual from the outside. KTM’s Miguel Oliveira , who fell twice in FP1, says he had no answer for why there were so many crashes and felt like the track was “sensitive” in how it offered grip. “I cannot really say for sure, but it feels like you have good grip, good temperature,” Oliveira said when asked by Motorsport.com for an explanation of Friday’s crashes. “But all of a sudden you either lose the front or lose the rear. So, somehow the … [Read more...] about MotoGP riders baffled by “strange” Le Mans grip during practice
French MotoGP: Zarco sets new lap record in FP3, Mir misses Q2 cut
Listen to this article Perfect conditions to start Saturday’s action at Le Mans meant lap time improvements on the combined order started to come in early, though there were no major movers. Pramac Ducati rider Jorge Martin was the first significant name to make an improvement to 10th on the combined order in the early stages of the 45-minute session, with Marc Marquez going to 12th briefly on the Honda after a tough Friday for the six-time world champion. LCR Honda’s Takaaki Nakagami did make a major jump up to fourth with around 20 minutes remaining, but his 1m31.471s was cancelled for exceeding track limits, dropping him back to 15th. A few minutes later, home hero Fabio Quartararo moved to second on his Yamaha with a 1m31.214s, while Marquez – who shadowed the reigning world champion – jumped up to fourth. On his next tour, Quartararo smashed the lap record which had already been beaten by Enea Bastianini on Friday with a 1m30.847s. Moving 0.198s clear of the … [Read more...] about French MotoGP: Zarco sets new lap record in FP3, Mir misses Q2 cut

Reigning MotoGP champion Fabio Quartararo traded lap times with Bagnaia early on in the session, briefly claiming provisional pole with a 1m30.688s flier. However, the French rider couldn’t keep up with Bagnaia’s pace in the second part of qualifying and eventually slipped to fourth on the grid, missing out a spot on the front row by 0.089s. Quartararo: Ducati does “something crazy” in MotoGP qualifying
Listen to this article Bagnaia led a Ducati 1-2 ahead of teammate Jack Miller on Saturday at Le Mans, setting a new lap record of 1m30.450s to claim his second pole of the 2022 campaign. Quartararo was involved in the pole battle through to the chequered flag, but had to concede defeat and settle for fourth on his factory Yamaha for his home round. The Frenchman says he was “on the limit” on his bike to produce a 1m30.688s, so wasn’t disappointed at not making the front row given how strong the Ducati is in qualifying trim. “I was disappointed, but two minutes later I was happy,” Quartararo said of qualifying fourth at Le Mans on Saturday. “On the qualifying, we miss something – all the time, not only in qualifying. “Ducati is able to really do something crazy. And the riders, I would not say only Ducati. “But we are all the same in the race pace. So, it’s difficult to really make the difference. “The difference you make is putting yourself on the limit, … [Read more...] about Quartararo: Ducati does “something crazy” in MotoGP qualifying
French MotoGP: Ducati’s Bagnaia claims back-to-back pole positions
Listen to this article The early stages of the Q2 qualifying session teed up a pole battle between Bagnaia and Quartararo, but the former would streak clear of the Yamaha rider to claim back-to-back poles in 2022. Ducati’s Bagnaia set the initial benchmark at 1m30.910s, leading Quartararo by 0.300 seconds, before the Italian improved that to a 1m30.699s. But Quartararo would produce a 1m30.688s with just under 10 minutes of the 15-minute shootout to go to lead Bagnaia by just 0.011s. Both riders would light up the timing screens across their second runs, but Bagnaia clicked into supreme form to regain top spot with two minutes remaining with a 1m30.450s. Teammate Jack Miller shadowed him to leap up to second, the Australian missing out by 0.069s. Quartararo was quick as he started his final lap, but bled time across the rest of the tour and could do nothing to better his earlier 1m30.688s. With Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro moving up to third for a third-straight front … [Read more...] about French MotoGP: Ducati’s Bagnaia claims back-to-back pole positions
