Jimmie Johnson: The NASCAR legend’s IndyCar challenge

· March 2, 2021 ·

Approaching his IndyCar debut at 45 years old, Jimmie Johnson is an old rookie, but he’s not just any old rookie. In a NASCAR Cup career that spanned 20 years and 686 races, he won seven championships 83 race wins. Now he’s about to embark on an IndyCar career of currently indeterminate length, with Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda. The active Scott Dixon and retired Dario Franchitti, with 10 IndyCar championships between them, will respond favorably to tutoring this 21 st century legend because they know that Johnson hasn’t just turned to open-wheel racing as a passing whim, something to occupy himself now his NASCAR days are over. He was always into open-wheel racing. His original hero was Rick Mears, and racing Indy cars was his ambition when he was a pre-teen growing up in Southern California, attending the Grand Prix of Long Beach and watching all the Indy car races on TV with his grandfather. Attending the 2004 Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix with fellow NASCAR legend Jeff … [Read more...] about Jimmie Johnson: The NASCAR legend’s IndyCar challenge

Jimmie Johnson’s Carvana IndyCar livery unveiled

· February 23, 2021 ·

Carvana, a giant in the auto retail industry, will back the seven-time NASCAR Cup champion as he tackles the 13 road and street courses on the 17-race 2021 NTT IndyCar Series trail. Johnson, who scored 83 wins in Cup competition, will carry Carvana’s signature halo and blue on the #48, which will be driven by 2004 IndyCar champion and 2013 Indy 500 winner Tony Kanaan in the four oval races. Said Johnson: "I'm really excited about this paint scheme, and over the last few years of my career I've found myself much more involved with the look of the cars that I drive. I was very thankful Carvana gave me the opportunity to be involved in the design process of my very first Indy car. “The collaboration between myself, Chip Ganassi Racing, Carvana and the design group was a lot of fun – we came up with many, many good ideas. So, I'm very excited about our primary paint scheme and also excited about some opportunities we might have in the future to mix things up and keep things … [Read more...] about Jimmie Johnson’s Carvana IndyCar livery unveiled

AXR signs Johnson, Kobayashi, Pagenaud for all IMSA enduros

· March 2, 2021 ·

After this trio – along with Mike Rockenfeller – finished second in the season-opening Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona, the Ally-sponsored Cadillac DPi-V.R was the subject of some speculation. In the past, AXR has proven well able to run two cars of race-winning potential, but last year entered just the #31 Whelen Engineering machine for Felipe Nasr and Pipo Derani. However, AXR has now confirmed that the #48 will also compete at this month’s 12 Hours of Sebring, the Six Hours of the Glen and Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. “I had such a great experience at the Rolex 24 at Daytona finishing second in the Ally Cadillac DPi-V.R that I want to continue and run the rest of the IMSA long events,” Johnson said. “The whole experience working with the Action Express Racing team, sharing the Ally Cadillac with Simon, Kamui and Mike just made me want to do more racing in the series. “The Cadillac DPi-V.R is such a great car to drive. I can’t wait to turn some laps at Sebring, The Glen and … [Read more...] about AXR signs Johnson, Kobayashi, Pagenaud for all IMSA enduros

Rahal on IndyCar driver talent: “The golden era is right now”

· March 4, 2021 ·

With the arrival of Scott McLaughlin from Supercars, Jimmie Johnson from NASCAR and Romain Grosjean from Formula 1, Rahal says that he believes every driver in NTT IndyCar Series has the potential to find his way to Victory Lane. This makes it very different from his debut year at the top level, driving for Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing in Champ Car, the series’ final year before it reunited with the Indy Racing League to form the IndyCar Series. “It's come a long way, man,” said Rahal. “I remember my first year in '07 in Champ Car… If you were outside the top five in a Newman/Haas/Lanigan car, you were probably pretty ticked off. “You look at where it is today and just how deep the field is, and it's impressive. Maybe everybody wants to say the golden era of Indy car racing was in the early '90s, or in [CART] Champ Car it may have been the late '90s, early 2000s. “But I've got to be honest. From a talent pool perspective, the golden era is right now. We're living the … [Read more...] about Rahal on IndyCar driver talent: “The golden era is right now”

Palou says he has better chance to win than Alonso or Sainz

· March 5, 2021 ·

Sainz has moved from McLaren to Ferrari in the off-season for his seventh year in F1, while two-time World Champion Alonso returns to F1 to join the Alpine team after a two-year-hiatus which included WEC Championship, a second Le Mans victory and a triumph in the Rolex 24 Hours. However, neither Alpine (formerly Renault) nor Ferrari won a grand prix last year, whereas Chip Ganassi Racing captured five wins and the NTT IndyCar Series championship in 2020, and Palou says he’s expecting to win races and contend for the championship in his sophomore IndyCar season. Asked by a Spanish reporter, “Who of these three drivers do you think has a bigger chance to win a race this year? Alex Palou… Fernando Alonso… Carlos Sainz?” Palou replied: “Me! I have to say me, right? Yeah, me, no doubts about it.” Quizzed on whether he will be able to fight for victories even this first year with Chip, he responded, “100 percent, yep.” Read Also: Sainz coy on rumoured crash in Jerez … [Read more...] about Palou says he has better chance to win than Alonso or Sainz
