Before all of the trendy Houston bakeries touting jewel-toned macarons , oversized croissants and $4 cupcakes, there was Moeller's Bakery . Well before. The iconic bakery, still family-owned to this day, dates back to 1930, when brothers Goswin "Gus" and Raymond Moeller opened shop at 4208 Almeda Road. The siblings were from a German immigrant family, who like so many at that time settled in Texas Hill Country. Gus operated the bakery alongside his wife, Lucille, with him doing the baking and Lucille handling customers. The bakery's prized possession In 1942, Moeller's gained a prized piece of equipment that would help cement the bakery's success for years to come. At the center of their operation was a 1935 Middleby Marshall carousel oven made of porcelain and brick—the last model made by the company before it began manufacturing tanks for World War II. In the '50s, the bakery moved to Rice Village, where it remained for about 30 years, and in 1990, it made one final … [Read more...] about Moeller’s, Houston’s oldest bakery, is a 90-year-old icon going strong

How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous
The homey universe of Ninfa's Houston has had a huge impact on food culture in and far beyond H-Town. For thousands of long-time fans of the legendary The Original Ninfa's on Navigation , this slogan sums it up: "The Best Mexican Food in Texas Since Texas was in Mexico!" The self-taught chef responsible for that food was Ninfa Laurenzo. Born Rodriguez in Harlingen, Texas, she eventually earned the nickname "Mama Ninfa" for the way she cared for the children in her community and the diners at her Houston restaurant. Mama Ninfa went to the big kitchen in the sky in 2001, but she will live on forever in culinary history for making fajitas a wildly popular staple of Tex-Mex cuisine . Ninfa and husband Domenic Thomas Laurenzo opened a tortilla and pizza factory in Second Ward after moving to Houston in 1949, and began selling their fresh packaged pizzas in grocery stores. "My parents also packaged masa harina and bottled chile con queso and hot sauce," said daughter Phyllis … [Read more...] about How Houston’s The Original Ninfa’s on Navigation got so famous

Houston’s most reviewed sandwiches includes two Local Foods outposts at the top
Summer is the season of cold foods that are as flavorful and satisfying as they are portable. In the spirit of three-digit temperatures and an abundance of satisfying Houston sandwiches, the Houston Chronicle looked through Yelp's Houston sandwich rankings to determine the most-reviewed local businesses that serve up the dish. No surprise, there are several Vietnamese places offering the venerated banh mi, as well as a burger spot, barbecue joint and (yes, really), a pizzeria. Another not-so-surprising finding? Two Local Foods locations ranked among the top five. Dylan Murray, executive chef-partner of Benjy's and Local Foods, offers some insight into the success of their fast-casual restaurant. "(Co-owner) Benjy (Levit) and I were ready to do something more casual but still take a fine-dining approach," Murray says of the reasoning behind the Local Foods launch. "We wanted to take something familiar to people and elevate it to a level people hadn't had before." Third Ward restaurant Spanish Village to close after 70 years
Alas, another Houston restaurant staple is shuttering— Spanish Village . The Tex-Mex restaurant has been a part of the city's dining scene since it opened 70 years ago in 1953, but the last customer will be served on March 31. Current owner Steve Rogers promised in a statement that Spanish Village will be honored in an upcoming project that is yet to be announced. "There's absolutely no arguing the impact Spanish Village has had on the Third Ward. The Medina family built something incredible, and I have been honored to be able to continue that," Rogers said. "Despite the restaurant closing, it's important to me and to the community to honor that legacy." Local diners were devastated when the Almeda Road restaurant closed its doors in July 2021, but it was only a few weeks later that the restaurant reopened under a new owner, Rogers, a well-known name in Houston's nightlife via Bar 5015, Faces of Houston and others. The Spanish Village property caught his eye when he was … [Read more...] about Third Ward restaurant Spanish Village to close after 70 years
A big tamale responsibility brings families together this time of year
You probably remember seeing three kings bread, or rosca de reyes , lining the shelves of your favorite panadería during the first week of January. If you were one of the lucky few who found a little surprise inside, you're in for a treat—and a big responsibility. Rosca de reyes is a centuries-old traditional cake from Spain and France that is served on the Epiphany. On the morning of Jan. 6, children across Latin America and Spain wake up to find gifts brought to them by the three kings, and Mexican households gather for the "partida de la rosca" (the cutting of the cake) to see who will have to bring tamales on Feb. 2 for Día de la Candelaria. Inside each rosca, several plastic figurines in the form of baby Jesus are hidden randomly around the oval-shaped cake. Everyone takes turns cutting a slice, letting out a heavy sigh of relief when they see an empty one, knowing they won't have to partake in the long tamale-making process that year. Those who find a baby in their … [Read more...] about A big tamale responsibility brings families together this time of year
Houston’s ‘blind cook’ Christine Ha wins ‘MasterChef’
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 Houston's Christine Ha “enjoys a challenge,” she stated with enthusiasm, and it's a good thing, because she certainly faces them. Ha is the Season Three winner of the FOX network's hit cooking show, “MasterChef,” a feat in and of itself. Notably, Ha is also blind. In September, the 33-year-old University of Houston student beat out 99 other chefs from across the country in a cooking competition on national TV. She managed her way through fierce elimination rounds by navigating strenuous timed cooking contests, while pitted against her sighted rivals. In one of the elimination rounds, the majority of the contestants were given fresh, canned crab meat to whip into meals. Not Christine - she was given an enormous, live crab. Though she suffered a bad cut while hand-cracking the crab's sharp shell, her cooking skills and mastery of flavor won out. It was a grand … [Read more...] about Houston’s ‘blind cook’ Christine Ha wins ‘MasterChef’
