Medical staff to be tried for Maradona death

June 23, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com Leave a Comment

Diego Maradona (centre during the 1986 World Cup) is widely considered one of the greatest footballers in history. BUENOS AIRES: Eight medical personnel will stand trial for alleged criminal negligence in the death of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona, according to a court ruling made public on Wednesday. No date has been set for the trial of the staff over Maradona's death in 2020, which prosecutors say was due to "omissions" by his caregivers who abandoned him "to his fate" during home hospitalization. Maradona died aged 60 while recovering from brain surgery for a blood clot, and after decades of battles with cocaine and alcohol addictions. He was found dead in bed two weeks after going under the knife, in a rented house in an exclusive Buenos Aires neighborhood to where he was brought after being discharged from hospital. He was found to have died of a heart attack. A panel of 20 medical experts convened by Argentina's public prosecutor concluded last year that … [Read more...] about Medical staff to be tried for Maradona death

‘Home ward’ medical care speeds up

The Department of Medical Services will launch a "home ward" pilot project for patients who have moderate symptoms to have tele-medical treatment at home. The service will start on July 1 for diabetic patients. Dr Somsak Akksilp, chief of the Department of Medical Services, said the home wards will reduce the number of patients at hospitals by about 20%. "We could say that Covid-19 was a game changer as people are more familiar with having tele-medical treatment and consultants at home,'' he said. He said the department has been promoting remote care for four years, but the number of patients taking part numbered just 1,000 a year on average. However, during the pandemic, the number of patients using tele-medicine increased 10-fold to 10,000 last year and the department wants to extend the service to cover other illnesses and diseases starting with diabetes. "Under the home ward concept, treatment can take place at home. A medical team can conduct a blood test at a patient's … [Read more...] about ‘Home ward’ medical care speeds up

Medical personnel provide services to outpatients at a private hospital in Bangkok.  Pornprom Satrabhaya The fields of medical services, beauty and e-commerce are tipped to see the brightest prospects in the second half of the year, according to the latest survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC). Thanavath Phonvichai, UTCC president, said the pandemic caused people to pay more attention to their healthcare, diet and exercise, while the growing numbers of elderly in the Thai population had resulted in higher demand for medical services and beauty. More importantly, the country's reopening to international visitors is expected to reinvigorate medical tourism, he said. However, Mr Thanavath warned of risk factors for the industry, including relatively high competition as the number of players expands and consumer concerns about the country's economic prospects and their future income. In addition, he said the industry has insufficient medical personnel … [Read more...] about Medical services set to see strong growth

Mark Cuban’s pharmacy could have saved Medicare $3.6 billion, researchers find

Medicare could have saved $3.6 billion in a single year if it had bought generic drugs from Mark Cuban’s online pharmacy, according to a Harvard University report. In the report published this week in Annals of Internal Medicine , researchers from Brigham’s and Women’s Hospital with the Harvard Medical School made major claims that Medicare wastes money in the way it buys drugs. Their report estimates the annual Medicare Part D spending on 89 generic drugs is $9.6 billion under the current purchasing model where the government is prohibited from buying drugs directly from manufacturers. “If Medicare purchased generic drugs in the maximum quantity supplied by [Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drug Co.], it could have saved $3.6 billion on 77 of 89 generic drugs,” said the study, which notes the savings came from cutting out drug distributors. Cuban, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Mavericks and celebrity investor on ABC’s Shark Tank , pushed into the pharmaceutical industry at … [Read more...] about Mark Cuban’s pharmacy could have saved Medicare $3.6 billion, researchers find

June 23, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON - Former president Donald Trump called those who participated in the demonstrations and Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, "smart" during a defiant interview last spring, according to a documentary filmmaker who was granted extensive access to Trump and his family and is now cooperating with the House committee investigating the insurrection. "A very small portion as you know went down to the Capitol, and then a very small portion of them went in. But I will tell you, they were angry from the standpoint of what happened in the election because they're smart, and they see. And they saw what happened. I believe that that was a big part of what happened on Jan. 6," he said to British filmmaker Alex Holder in a March interview, according to a film clip reviewed by The Washington Post. Trump said it was a "sad day" but did not offer a repudiation of the events, according to the footage reviewed by The Washington Post and to the filmmaker. Holder met with Jan. 6 committee … [Read more...] about Trump called Jan. 6 participants ‘smart,’ filmmaker says

Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US

June 24, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 America was convulsed with anger, joy, fear and confusion Friday after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The canyon-like divide across the U.S. over the right to terminate a pregnancy was on full display, with abortion rights supporters calling it a dark day in history, while abortion foes welcomed the ruling as the answer to their prayers. In eliminating the constitutional right to abortion that has stood for a half-century, the high court left the politically charged issue up to the states, about half of which are now likely to ban the procedure. Some states, such as Oklahoma and Louisiana, had bans already on the books that automatically went into effect when Roe fell. Hundreds of people surrounded the barricaded Supreme Court in Washington, some questioning the high court's legitimacy, while others cheered the ruling and proclaimed the dawn of a … [Read more...] about Abortion ruling exposes deep chasm over the issue in the US

Collision over cannabis

Collision over cannabis Anutin: 'Don't politicise ganja' Two of the brightest stars in politics were on a collision course last week, which had observers speculating on the possibility of one plotting to upstage or even undermine the other. The delisting of cannabis as a narcotic has catapulted Anutin Charnvirakul to stardom, not only as public health minister but as leader of second-biggest coalition partner, the Bhumjaithai Party. As public health minister, he has pushed for cannabis to be decriminalised to allow people to capitalise on its medicinal properties and for research purposes. Also, he prides himself as being a leader of a political party able to overcome the unthinkable -- removing cannabis from the narcotics list -- which was adopted as Bhumjaithai's flagship campaign promise and dismissed by most people from the outset as wishful thinking. However, decriminalisation has come with a chorus of warnings from medical professionals about the dangers of … [Read more...] about Collision over cannabis

Khao San Road, a popular tourist spot in Bangkok, comes alive at night on June 1, as restrictions are lifted. Covid-19 hospitalisations have increased in the capital since entertainment venues reopened last month. (Photo: Pornprom Satrabhaya) The number of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals in Bangkok has risen by 10% since last month, when entertainment places reopened, the chief of the Department of Medical Services said on Thursday. Dr Somsak Akksilp, the director-general, said that last month there were about 900 Covid-19 patients at hospitals in the capital, and the number rose to about 1,000 this month. “It is a 10% increase from last month, when strict regulations were still in place. However, it is normal under the circumstances, with more relaxed regulations and especially the reopening of entertainment places ,” he said.
