M Performance models have been around for longer than some people care to admit. They initially showed up in the 1980s with cars like the BMW M635i but back then nobody really knew them as M Performance cars because not even the M brand was developed properly. As a matter of fact, the first M5 ever made was actually the E12 M535i, yet another M Performance model if you will. Today things have changed and BMW is pushing M Performance cars more than ever, even adding them up to the overall sales figures for the BMW M GmbH division. The growing attention M Performance cars get these days is wholeheartedly deserved too. They are aiming at filling a gap in the BMW line-up between ‘regular’ cars and the fully-blown M models or, as the creator of the M brand, Jochen Neerpasch put it: the real BMWs. Well, while I personally agree with Mr. Neerpasch’s take on what constitutes a real BMW, I also have to admit that they might be too much for some people these days. … [Read more...] about TEST DRIVE: 2018 BMW M550d xDrive – Quad-Turbos for the People

Believe it or not, the R35 Nissan GT-R is 11 years old. It has enjoyed considerable success along the way, but after a decade, perhaps it’s time to up the ante. Nissan has already started working on designing and engineering an all-new platform for the next-generation GT-R. However, the carmaker has yet to decide how much electrification the car’s powertrain will get. At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa told Autocar that the R36 won’t take cues from the limited-run GT-R50, but “has to be its own special car,” adding that it has to be “the fastest super sports car in the world” and retain a visual identity that’s unique among cars of its kind. While Albaisa constantly reviews sketches for the supercar, he said his team cannot begin ‘serious work’ until decisions about the powertrain and the new platform is finalised. “The challenge is on the engineer, to be honest. We will do our jobs … [Read more...] about Next Nissan GT-R to be fastest supercar in the world?
Whether a person knows cars in and out or could be tricked into trying to buy blinker fluid, when most of us think of sports cars, we think of sleek, fast and refined. Nissan’s design boss, instead, insists the company’s next six-figure GT-R supercar be “the world’s fastest brick. Less wing, more brick.” Honestly, that’s refreshing and accurate. Nissan’s current sports-car lineup is made up of a bunch of big ol’ fast bricks, including the current GT-R that makes 565 horsepower standard, and Nissan just want to make big ol’ faster bricks in the future. In the age of expensive sports cars that look like amphibious fish creatures and bugs that could slice you in half, a brick approach is... wholesome, in more ways than one. It’s nice. In an interview with Autocar, Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa didn’t say how the new GT-R would become the world’s fastest brick—whether by some level of electrification or none … [Read more...] about Nissan Design Boss Wants Next GT-R to Be the ‘World’s Fastest Brick’
Nissan is still in a very early stage of designing and engineering a completely new platform for the next-gen GT-R. In fact, the Japanese manufacturer has still to decide if, and how, it will implement electrification on the model’s new powertrain. Nevertheless, Nissan’s design boss Alfonso Albaisa told Autocar that the next GT-R will not take styling cues from the GTR-50 that made its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Instead, he claimed, Nissan’s halo performance car “has to be its own special car” as well as “the fastest super sports car in the world”. While Albaisa is constantly reviewing design proposals for the new GT-R, he admitted that his team can’t begin serious work until decisions about the powertrain and new platform are finalized. “The challenge is on the engineer, to be honest,” he said. “We will do our jobs when the time comes to make the car something really special. But we’re not even … [Read more...] about Nissan Design Chief Claims Next GT-R Will Be “The World’s Fastest Brick”
As we get ready to go back racing again, fever is starting to build around the imminent release of Ron Howard’s movie Rush. With a few weeks to go until the world gets to see what I and some of my colleagues have already been fortunate enough to have viewed, I thought I’d run down a list (a personal list) of what I reckon are the top 10 racing movies of all time. Well… at least, the ones that I’ve seen anyway. Oh, and before we get started, I haven’t included Senna or TT3D Closer to the Edge, as I thought the list should stick to movies rather than documentaries… so here we go: 10. Cars 2006 – John Lasseter – Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, Bonnie Hunt I’ve always been a huge fan of animation, and when Cars was released it combined two of my biggest loves. John Lasseter visited quite a few Grands Prix back in 2006 to promote the movie… not that he needed to. It was a huge smash. I don’t think we really need to explain the … [Read more...] about The Top 10 Racing Films… Ever
