It is fair to say that the regular Volkswagen Golf is one of the best all-round buys – competitively priced when new and holding its value well. Does ditching an internal combustion engine make it a better day-to-day bet than a bespoke electric car? Our car: Volkswagen e-Golf List price when new: £32,730 (excluding PICG grant) Price as tested: £35,490 (excluding PICG grant) Official fuel economy: n/a Read more long-term tests May 24th, 2018 If buyers are going to adopt electric cars, some familiarity will be helpful. There’s almost nothing more familiar on the road than a Volkswagen Golf, so the e-Golf variant is the perfect vehicle in which to experience battery-powered daily driving. I’ve been driving electric cars for years, but almost all my previous experiences have involved single test drives, after which I’ve been able to walk away, leaving someone else to worry about charging. Living in a terraced south London … [Read more...] about Volkswagen e-Golf – long-term test: is the family hatchback still one of the best when it’s electrified?
How does Fiat’s practical family hatchback measure up to rivals? Fiat is best known these days for the cute 500 city car, a model which still sells by the truckload. It has another showroom star, the 124 Spider, along with variants of the 500 for crossover and MPV buyers. It also sells the Tipo, a car that, unlike its siblings, is focused very much on practicality, space and value for money. It’s Fiat’s most sensible car, a five-door hatchback that competes with the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf. Its headliner is undoubtedly value-packed pricing. Fiat doesn’t give you a miserly standard spec for your budget-level cash, either. All Tipos feature air conditioning, electric front windows, DAB radio and Bluetooth. The equipment list swells further as you go up the range. The small engine range tops out with two 118bhp power units, one petrol and one diesel. They both do 0-60mph in under 10 seconds, but never feel particularly fast; on paper, the 1.4-litre turbo is … [Read more...] about Fiat Tipo review: a decent family car for not much cash
Earlier today, Toyota released a slew of photos of the 2019 Corolla Hatchback for the United States market, and now its Australian division has released first details of the car that will go on sale Down Under, including preliminary specifications and equipment. The family hatchback will be offered with two powertrain options, with the first being the brand new M20A-FKS 2.0 litre Dynamic Force four-cylinder petrol engine. Naturally aspirated and fitted with D-4S direct injection as well as VVT-iE electric variable valve timing, it makes 168 hp and 200 Nm of torque, and is paired to a six-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT) with automatic rev-matching as standard. Also available is the new Direct Shift-CVT, the world’s first continuously variable transmission with a launch gear for improved low-speed efficiency and acceleration. It gets a 10-speed virtual ratio mode as well as a sport mode and paddle shifters. A hybrid variant will be available with all trim grades for the … [Read more...] about 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback for Australian market – 168 hp/200 Nm 2.0 litre petrol and 1.8 litre hybrid
The new Toyota Corolla Hatchback (called the Auris in Europe) may have been designed to be a more exciting car to drive than the last, but I’ll bet my bottom ringgit that it won’t be quite as exciting to drive as the new Corolla Hatchback drift car for the 2018 Formula Drift championship. Piloted by 2015 champion Fredric Aasbø, this fire-spitting sideways machine may vaguely resemble the ho-hum family hatchback at first glance, but it’s a very different beast under the skin. That’s largely because the once front-wheel drive five-door has been converted into a rear-wheel drive machine, but also because the standard 2.0 litre Dynamic Force engine has been kicked to the kerb. Replacing it is the 2AR-FE 2.5 litre four-pot from the pre-facelift Camry, but it’s been stroked to 2.7 litres and given a turbocharger and nitrous oxide injection kit. Outputs have soared to a massive 1,000 hp and 1,150 Nm of torque, all sent to the rear wheels through a Gforce GSR … [Read more...] about Toyota Corolla Hatchback drift car makes 1,000 hp!

Peugeot is on a bit of a roll as of late. It was a company that, back in the 1980s, was known for its sporty versions of regular hatchbacks. The 205 GTI is pretty much an icon of its time, but the company also made cars like the 309 GTI (which was better) and the 405 Mi16.That era also saw Peugeot going rallying. The mid-engined 205 T16 won two world rally titles, and the larger 405 T16 blitzed Pikes Peak, setting a record and starring in the famous Climb Dance film.It lost its way a little in the 1990s and 2000s. Bar the occasional hit, it churned out a range of unmemorable cars with a focus on filling niches. Anyone remember the 206cc and 307cc?But it’s a brand that seems to be on its way back. The RCZ was an excellent car, and the sportier RCZ R even more so. We tested the 208 GTI before Christmas, and decided it was our favorite car in the sector. This week we’ve been trying out the larger, and more powerful, 308 GTI.Couldn’t decide what color it should be … [Read more...] about Fiery Family Fun: Peugeot 308 GTI Review
