Thailand captain Silawan Intamee and the Philippines’ Eva Madarang vie for the ball in their AFC Women’s Asia Cup match on Friday in Mumbai. (AFC Photo) MUMBAI: The Thai women’s football team face an uphill climb after a 1-0 loss to the Philippines in their opening match of the AFC Women’s Asia Cup 2022 on Friday in Mumbai. Chandler McDaniel scored the winner late in the second half as the Philippines boosted their hopes of advancing to the quarter-finals, while Thailand were left to rue their missed chances. The Chaba Kaew dominated the match in terms of possession, 64% to 36%, and each side had plenty of opportunities, but it took 81 minutes before anyone found the back of the net. McDaniel collected a headed pass from Ryley Bugay and buried a right-footed shot from outside the box. The Philippines, who came into the tie having not beaten Thailand in 12 previous attempts, started on the front foot but soon found themselves defending as the match progressed at the DY Patil … [Read more...] about Thai women fall 1-0 to Philippines
The James Webb Space Telescope, launched Dec. 25, will shortly arrive at the destination from which it will begin its in-depth examination of the distant universe. However, unlike its predecessor, the Hubble Space Telescope, the James Webb Telescope won't be orbiting Earth. Rather, it will orbit the sun in an area of space known as a Lagrange point, where the tricky overlap of gravity from the sun and Earth and centrifugal forces from its orbit will allow the telescope to maintain its position relative to the orbiting Earth almost - but not quite - effortlessly. The Earth-sun orbital relationship produces five Lagrange points, which scientists number L1 through L5. Placing the telescope at L2 - perpetually in Earth's shadow, shielded from the sun's radiation and glare - will allow it to look farther, while also keeping its sensitive instruments at the super-cold temperatures they need to operate. In the 18th century, Italian French mathematician Joseph-Louis Lagrange determined … [Read more...] about What is a Lagrange point, the final destination for the James Webb Space Telescope?
For a decade, Atif Mahr mentored young people, preaching the virtues of anti-violence even as the streets of his north St. Louis neighborhood echoed ever more often with the crack of gunfire. Then one day last October, those bullets tore a jagged hole in Mahr's own family. His daughter Isis was dropping off a friend when a gunman unloaded on her car. The soccer standout, who had been saving money to pay her way through nursing school, was 19. "I always feared it," Mahr said. "I never imagined it." Isis's death filled him with hurt. The reaction from the community, however, gave him hope. The past two years have been dreadful for public safety in U.S. cities as homicide numbers soared - in some cases to record levels. Experts say a constellation of factors is to blame, including the pandemic's scars and a breakdown in trust between police and the communities they serve during the social unrest of 2020. But as 2022 kicks off, city leaders from coast to coast say the stars may … [Read more...] about Homicide rates have soared nationwide, but mayors see a chance for a turnaround in 2022
