Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff has admitted the improvements the team made in the second half of last season gave it too much faith in the concept behind its Formula 1 car design. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Following an unsuccessful start to last year, Mercedes significantly improved its car and won the penultimate round of the championship in Brazil. The team retained the concept behind last year’s chassis in the new car it launched for the 2023 season. However at the season-opening round in Bahrain the team discovered it was far off the pace of dominant winners Red Bull, and confirmed it will overhaul the design of the W14. Wolff said the performance gains Mercedes made with the W13 persuaded it to persist with its deign philosophy. “We had the perfect storm last year,” he explained. “The car got better and then you start to question the concept of the car less than you probably should. “Now we have to prove that we are not happy where we’ve … [Read more...] about “Perfect storm” gave Mercedes too much faith in its car design concept – Wolff · RaceFans

Do you know what that could be? Those are some of the deep questions residents of the fictional town of Deerfield are dealing with as they confront fulfilling their life potential in the new Apple TV+ series “The Big Door Prize” premiering Wednesday. “The show is in many ways about the idea of the road not taken, and that no matter how happy or fulfilled you think you are, there’s always this curiosity about the other path,” says David West Read, showrunner and executive producer. Lamborghini Vies for SUV Dominance With Urus Performante
When Lamborghini introduced the world to the Urus back in 2017, the company dubbed it the world’s first “super-SUV.” Although the term seemed frivolous at the time, it was understandable that a brand known for exotic sports car performance would want to shield itself against the inevitable accusations that it had gone soft. In the years since, the concept of engineering supercar capability into a high-riding, family-friendly vehicle platform has caught on with enough luxury automakers to make super-SUVs a legitimate segment of the industry. And with that, of course, comes increased competition for the hearts and wallets of well-heeled buyers. Much like the Aston Martin DBX707 that we recently tested , the Urus Performante builds on the already-formidable capability of the automaker’s standard sport-utility offering. But whereas Aston Martin was willing to trade some of the DBX707’s performance prowess for a more palatable driving experience in everyday use, the Italians have … [Read more...] about Lamborghini Vies for SUV Dominance With Urus Performante

Strategic superiority gets Raikkonen and Lotus off to a winning start · RaceFans
Speaking at this year’s final pre-season test session, Lotus team principal Eric Boullier remarked on how some cars seemed to be better suited for one-lap speed at the expense of pace across a stint, and vice-versa. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Asked if that would place greater emphasis on race strategy he readily agreed, saying it would be very important. That proved prophetic of what unfolded in the first race of 2013, won by his driver Kimi Raikkonen . Red Bull slip back The Lotuses claimed the fourth row during the postponed qualifying session which took place on the morning of the race. But the E21’s pace over a race stint proved its strongest suit, and by being one of few drivers to make a two-stop strategy work, Raikkonen claimed an excellent victory. The Red Bulls seemed to display the opposing traits. Quick in qualifying, but that pace vanished in the race.
