By now, you’ve certainly seen the commercials or—if you’re in one of the now 107 markets served by Carvana—one of their giant automotive “vending machines” next to a major highway. Standing nearly 100 feet tall, these vending machines look like every automotive fantasy you ever had when you were putting your Hot Wheels into their carrier. Carvana’s vending machines are the architectural manifestation of their promise to bring the public a “new way of buying a car.” But is their new way any better? As a journalist, I wanted to know. And as someone who realized they didn’t need both a pickup truck AND a minivan, I also wanted to know. So, I took one for the team and found out, the hard way. Which turns out to have not been so hard after all. It all started online late one night—as most great adventures do—when the realization began to sink in that, although I liked my 2015 Ram Promaster City minivan, … [Read more...] about A New Way to Buy Your Next Car?

Subscription services are the norm nowadays. You can subscribe to Netflix to watch movies, to Spotify to listen to music, and to Blue Apron to try out new foods. So, why not start subscribing to cars? Basically, a car subscription is exactly what it sounds like. You don’t have to buy or lease a car anymore. You just pay a monthly fee instead without worrying about all the pesky insurance and maintenance costs. And you can even swap your car in for a new one when you feel like it—so, y’know, you can take the whole family on a road trip in an SUV, but go back to your small vehicle to get the fuel savings to the work commute. Why Subscribe? Car subscription gives you the kind of flexibility that the traditional avenues of driving don’t offer. You can change cars quickly and more freely than normal because basically all you’re committing to is a certain brand’s service. If you’re cool with driving nothing but Volvos but need the … [Read more...] about This is What You Need to Know About Car Subscriptions
Say you’re an urbanite who made the decision to leave the perils and unexpected expenses of car ownership begin and rely only on your phone. A money-saving choice? Not necessarily, according to a study the American Automobile Association. Drawing information from numerous studies, AAA’s report looks at the cost of owning a vehicle versus the cost of replacing those same trips with a ride-hailing app and infrequent car rental. It’s not even close, but, as the saying goes, your mileage may vary. The study focused only on urban dwellers, who, according to a previous study, drive an average of 10,841 miles annually. As we’re dealing with averages here, the vehicle in question is a medium-sized sedan. Amassing data from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the study found the average cost of ownership for this faceless sedan (including maintenance, fuel, insurance, vehicle payments) amounts to $7,321 a year, or $10,049 after factoring in parking charges. If those … [Read more...] about Feeling Average? Study Shows Owning a Car Is Still the Cheapest Way to Get to Your Destination In a Car
Most people buy cars with as little amount of hassle and wait as possible. They drive to the closest dealer lot, pick out a blue one, sign some papers and off they go. How else would you explain someone buying a Mitsubishi Outlander? However, some people like to take their time, have some lunch while they think about what sort of car they’d like and then they take to the interwebs to find the right one. Even those internet-scouring folks, more often than not, won’t leave a certain radius from their home to find their car. However, maybe they should. When you search further outside of your typical radius, a few things can happen; you can drastically increase the amount of great cars you’ll find, increasing your chances to find our perfect car, and you can also find significantly better prices. Many different states are a lot cheaper than others. For instance, I live in New Jersey where cars are very expensive but searching for cars in Pennsylvania can field much … [Read more...] about Why you might want to buy a car out of state and have it shipped
