Back in 1976, Ford began developing a new small truck platform of its own: the Ranger. A frugal, fuel-efficient truck for the hardworking American, the Ranger was born as a contingency plan from Ford for an industry and consumer shift to smaller trucks that evolved into an icon. Now it’s back, so here’s a look at the mess of politics, recession and war that brought on the 1983 original. The Ford Ranger was, for a time, the best selling truck in the U.S., and its legacy as a straightforward no-bullshit machine for the working person and go-to second vehicle for active lifestyles kept it alive in the U.S. for nearly 30 years and cemented it in the hearts of fans. But this dependable, lovable truck was Ford’s answer to changing politics, harsh economic recession, and an oil crisis that turned American consumers away from big and thirsty domestic vehicles, and towards the new threat of smaller, economical and fuel-efficient imports. Recession, War And The Oil Crisis: … [Read more...] about The Lovable Ford Ranger Emerged As A Hero Out Of Recession And War

The Honda HR-V has well and truly withstood the test of time. Originally launched here in February 2015, the Hi-Rider Revolutionary Vehicle (in case you forgot what it stood for) pretty much sailed through to 2018, topping the B-segment crossover sales chart and leaving most of its rivals green with envy. In fact, the HR-V is Honda Malaysia’s second most popular model after the City, accounting for a full 30% of the company’s total sales. Some phenomenon, isn’t it? Even after all those years, demand remains bullish. But how do you up the ante? Or rather, how much better can the HR-V get? Not by a whole lot apparently, as you’ll find out in a bit. Let’s just say, if it ain’t broke… After all, the HR-V was indeed the model that sparked the subcompact crossover craze in Malaysia. In a superficial market, style is paramount, because nobody wants to be seen driving an ugly car (read: Chevy Orlando, Fiat Multipla), no matter the practicality. The … [Read more...] about DRIVEN: 2018 Honda HR-V RS facelift review in Malaysia
BMW revealed the first official pictures and information on the BMW 8 Series. Here is the first static comparison with the Mercedes S-Class Coupe. Since 1999, when the former BMW 8 Series was discontinued, the Mercedes S-Class Coupe has not had a competitor from BMW. The BMW 8 Series resembles more to the Porsche 911, but the S-Class Coupe remains the traditional rival But in November 2018, the second generation of the BMW 8 Series will compete again against the luxury Mercedes S-Class Coupe, as a BMW insider stated that the new BMW 8 Series will be positioned much more as a rival of the Porsche 911 and of the Aston Martin DB11 than a competitor for the Mercedes S-Class Coupe. BMW 8 Series will not replace the 6 Series, but the 6 Series Coupe and Cabriolet will not exist anymore. BMW stated that the digit 8 in the model’s name is an indicative of the newcomer’s high-ranking status within BMW products range. It has been a long time coming, the B8 Volkswagen Passat. First seen in Europe in late 2014, the latest big sedan by Wolfsburg made its first Asian appearance in December that year, here in Malaysia. Two years on, and with sales of the B7 Passat done and dusted, the all-new Passat is now ready to roll. The B7 Passat is a familiar sight on Malaysian roads, due to its locally-assembled status and pricing. It appeared significantly different from the preceding B6 Passat that Volkswagen peddled when it first set up shop in Malaysia – sharp lines vs curved ends – but the outgoing car was actually a heavily revised version of the B6 (only piece of body metal carried over was the roof), which was launched in 2005. UPDATE: Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has launched the B8 Passat – view our launch report here The car you see here is an all-new generation Passat, unrelated to the B7. It sits on the Volkswagen Group’s Modularer Querbaukasten (MQB) platform that … [Read more...] about DRIVEN: B8 Volkswagen Passat 1.8 TSI and 2.0 TSI Malaysia review
First unveiled globally in March last year, the Renault Captur facelift could be introduced in Malaysia soon, after a camouflaged unit was spotted on the PLUS Highway near Bangi by paultan.org reader Henriko Sjarifuddin. As you can see in these photos, only certain areas of the Captur – front fog lamps and taillights – have been covered up. These parts are where you’ll find some of the changes that are part of the facelift, the former now featuring C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Meanwhile, there are new 3D-effect C-shaped graphics for the taillights.Cues that are not hidden away include the new “skid plates” at the front and rear, which are meant to give a more rugged aesthetic. If that isn’t enough, the whole vehicle is wearing one of two new paint colours introduced with the update known as Atacama Orange. As for the wheels, they appear to be new 17-inch Emotion alloys with black inserts instead of the Explore set available on the current … [Read more...] about SPYSHOTS: Renault Captur facelift spotted in Malaysia
