Toto Wolff gives hope to Mick Schumacher over potential F1 grid return
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks Mick Schumacher has the potential to follow in Nyck de Vries’ footsteps in his quest to return to the F1 grid. Schumacher was aiming to head into a third year driving for the Haas team after first making his F1 debut in 2021, but the powers-that-be at the American outfit decided to cut him in loose, favouring a more experienced line-up with Nico Hulkenberg joining forces with Kevin Magnussen. With a lack of available options to try and retain his place on the F1 grid, Schumacher has been forced to settle into a reserve driver role for the F1 2023 campaign. However, the fact he has landed at Mercedes will have gone an awful long to cushioning the blow. Mercedes had an opening in the reserve driver slot after Nyck de Vries’ services were acquired by the Red Bull team, placing the Dutchman in the sister outfit of AlphaTauri alongside Yuki Tsunoda for the 2023 season. De Vries put himself firmly on the F1 radar following a superb debut performance … [Read more...] about Toto Wolff gives hope to Mick Schumacher over potential F1 grid return
Albon still finding F1 radio “sweet spot” at Williams after early aggression
Listen to this article Albon signed for Williams ahead of the 2022 season after spending a year in a reserve role with Red Bull, who had dropped him from its full-time line-up at the end of 2020. The Anglo-Thai driver enjoyed an impressive season for Williams, leading its efforts at the back of the grid by scoring four of its eight points and winning praise for his efforts. It resulted in Albon signing a multi-year contract to stay at Williams beyond 2022. But senior figures within Williams spoke of wanting Albon to be firmer with the team outside of the car, including former technical director FX Demaison, who said in Brazil that Albon “needs to be a bit more hard with the team and push us a bit more.” Albon acknowledged it was “tricky” to strike the right balance, but was confident that he is able to “achieve a lot with what I say.” “When things aren’t right, I speak up,” Albon told Motorsport.com. “When things are out of our control, I also don’t feel it’s … [Read more...] about Albon still finding F1 radio “sweet spot” at Williams after early aggression
Russell’s Mercedes adaption helped by his Williams F1 battles
Listen to this article Russell joined Mercedes' F1 line-up at the start of 2022 after spending five years as a member of its junior driver programme, with the final three as a racer for Williams in F1 after winning back-to-back championships in GP3 and Formula 2. But the Briton's start to life at the Mercedes works squad changed suddenly from hoping for race victories and a possible title tilt when the first ground-effects Silver Arrows car proved to have major problems with porpoising and ride that meant Mercedes lost the constructors' title for the first time in 2013. Russell was nevertheless able to score a string of 15 points finishes in the opening 16 races of 2022, while Hamilton's results were more inconsistent as he tried a wide range of set-up changes to try and cope better with the W13's tricky handling. The change that Vowles is making his priority at Williams F1
Listen to this article It is not lost on him that for four of the last five years, Williams has found itself pegged to the bottom of the constructors’ championship. Plus, more recently, it has faced fresh uncertainty following the departure of team principal Jost Capito and its technical director FX Demaison. Turning the squad’s fortunes around quickly is not going to be an easy task for Vowles, as he is comes in at a time when much of the work on the 2023 car has already been completed. His job list is going to be large too; for he will need to get a restructured technical team in place to help drive its F1 challenger forward as fast as he can. But, while decisions over the technical department and overall reporting structure will be important for Vowles, there is one thing that he thinks take priority above everything else: a new team culture. For the team that he famously remembers watching through the catch fencing at Silverstone in the early 1990’s during its … [Read more...] about The change that Vowles is making his priority at Williams F1
F1 B-team comments about Haas felt like a “broken record”
Listen to this article Following a difficult 2021 that saw the team opt against car development and fail to score any points, Haas made a flying start to 2022 as Kevin Magnussen finished fifth in the season-opener. But the upswing in form from Haas led to scrutiny from other teams, including McLaren , which raised concerns about the relationships between so-called A- and B-teams in F1. Haas has enjoyed a technical partnership with Ferrari since joining the grid in 2016, taking a number of listed parts as permitted by the regulations. The American team always maintained that its door was open for the FIA to conduct any checks if there were genuine concerns about the relationship, although no formal complaint was made. Reflecting on the comments made by other teams, Haas F1 boss Steiner said "you get used to it" after years of questions about the relationship with Ferrari. "If you are good, you are a copycat; if you are doing bad, nobody cares," Steiner told … [Read more...] about F1 B-team comments about Haas felt like a “broken record”

Felipe Massa Beat team mate in qualifying 2/20 Beat team mate in race 0/17 Races finished 19/20 Laps spent ahead of team mate 70/1081 Halfway through the season Massa appeared at number 22 in these rankings, so 14th represents a significant gain following his disastrous first half of the season. Massa never mastered the F2012 when it was at its worst the way Alonso did. In Malaysia he dropped back from his team mate at a rate of over two seconds per lap and was almost lapped by him at the end. In Spain, as in Malaysia, the next car behind him at the finish was a Caterham. As the Ferrari improved Massa made faltering progress. There were still wasted races in Canada (spin), Germany (went off during qualifying) and Singapore (collided with the other Caterham). While Alonso only failed to reach Q3 twice, Massa missed out in half of the races. But there were also … [Read more...] about 2012 F1 Driver Rankings part two: 14-6 · RaceFans
