The 2012 driver rankings continue with part two, which take us up to the top five. 14. Felipe Massa Beat team mate in qualifying 2/20 Beat team mate in race 0/17 Races finished 19/20 Laps spent ahead of team mate 70/1081 Halfway through the season Massa appeared at number 22 in these rankings, so 14th represents a significant gain following his disastrous first half of the season. Massa never mastered the F2012 when it was at its worst the way Alonso did. In Malaysia he dropped back from his team mate at a rate of over two seconds per lap and was almost lapped by him at the end. In Spain, as in Malaysia, the next car behind him at the finish was a Caterham. As the Ferrari improved Massa made faltering progress. There were still wasted races in Canada (spin), Germany (went off during qualifying) and Singapore (collided with the other Caterham). While Alonso only failed to reach Q3 twice, Massa missed out in half of the races. But there were also … [Read more...] about 2012 F1 Driver Rankings part two: 14-6 · RaceFans

2012 F1 Driver Rankings #2: Hamilton · RaceFans
There was very little to separate the top three drivers of 2012 besides the cars they were competing in. Unfortunately for Lewis Hamilton his let him down while he was leading on more than one occasion – and that was just the beginning of his problems. Hamilton’s performances in 2012 were quick and generally error-free – a world away from the troubled racer who often showed up in 2011. However the year began with a missed opportunity in Melbourne. He put the car on pole position but was beaten off the line by his team mate and was unfortunate to slip behind Sebastian Vettel when the safety car came out. Beat team mate in qualifying 16/20 Beat team mate in race 9/13 Races finished 15/20 Laps spent ahead of team mate 638/958 His pole-to-third result was repeated in Malaysia where the team made the first of several errors in the pits, most of which Hamilton bore the brunt of. But he also discovered that the MP4-27, though very quick in the dry, was … [Read more...] about 2012 F1 Driver Rankings #2: Hamilton · RaceFans
More Than Equal aims to offer females a shot into F1 within 10 years
Listen to this article Motorsport is constantly evolving and is one of the only types of sports where both males and females can compete against each other on equal terms. Today females have become more visible in the racing world but the challenges they continue to face keep preventing them from competing at the top tier of racing, especially in F1. And while motorsport as a whole continues to make progress forward with female representation, F1 which is considered to be the pinnacle of racing is one of the only major series that doesn't have a woman driver competing at the world championship level. While the world advances, women prove that they can succeed in the same positions as men- they are astronauts, in the military, and global leaders, yet they can't get a seat in F1. And because of the current state that F1 is in with its lack of female drivers and prospects in the near future, providing extra support for women and young girls throughout their racing careers is … [Read more...] about More Than Equal aims to offer females a shot into F1 within 10 years
Logan Sargeant completes F1 2023 grid with Williams after securing Super Licence
Logan Sargeant will drive for Williams in Formula 1 next season after securing his Super Licence in the F2 season finale at Abu Dhabi. Williams boss Jost Capito confirmed in late October that Sargeant would be Alex Albon’s new team-mate in 2023 if he acquired enough points to hold the Super Licence needed to race in Formula 1. And the 21-year-old American did exactly that at the Yas Marina circuit, keeping himself out of trouble with a P6 finish in the sprint race followed by a P5 result in Sunday’s race proper. It meant that he finished the season with 148 points, enough to lock down P4 in the F2 Championship and confirm his step up to Formula 1 next season with Williams. Sargeant’s arrival on the F1 grid means the sport is set to see its first US racer in a Grand Prix since Alexander Rossi in 2015. But, whilst it is jubilation for Sargeant, it is the final hammer blow for Mick Schumacher, who would have been on Williams’ back-up list had Sargeant not secured his Super … [Read more...] about Logan Sargeant completes F1 2023 grid with Williams after securing Super Licence
First pictures of the Valencia F1 street track (2008 European Grand Prix) · RaceFans
The Circuito Urbano Valencia saw F1 action for the first time today. Before the race weekend I wasn’t sure how good the track would look – footage from the first race at the circuit made the track look a bit featureless. But I thought it looked better during today’s free practice session. Here’s a selection of photographs of F1 cars during free practice one and two showing some of the more interesting scenery at the circuit, including the harbour and surrounding buildings. Russell’s Mercedes adaption helped by his Williams F1 battles
Listen to this article Russell joined Mercedes' F1 line-up at the start of 2022 after spending five years as a member of its junior driver programme, with the final three as a racer for Williams in F1 after winning back-to-back championships in GP3 and Formula 2. But the Briton's start to life at the Mercedes works squad changed suddenly from hoping for race victories and a possible title tilt when the first ground-effects Silver Arrows car proved to have major problems with porpoising and ride that meant Mercedes lost the constructors' title for the first time in 2013. Russell was nevertheless able to score a string of 15 points finishes in the opening 16 races of 2022, while Hamilton's results were more inconsistent as he tried a wide range of set-up changes to try and cope better with the W13's tricky handling. Speaking to Motorsport.com, Shovlin suggested that Russell's experience of driving cars that lacked the top performance of those and a field-leading squad … [Read more...] about Russell’s Mercedes adaption helped by his Williams F1 battles

Second Driver of the Weekend win for Rosberg · RaceFans
Nico Rosberg was voted Driver of the Weekend for the second time in three races after his victory in the Japanese Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver took over half the votes after winning the race from pole position and moving a step closer to clinching the world championship. Nico Rosberg’s Japanese Grand Prix For the third year running Rosberg beat Lewis Hamilton to pole position at Suzuka. But crucially, this time he beat his team mate to victory too. That came about partly because of Hamilton’s slow getaway from the lights. But Rosberg consistently had the beating of the world cbampion throughout practice and qualifying too. Despite Hamilton stating this isn’t a strong track of his, I think it’s more that it is just a strong track of his teammates. It was narrow in qualifying, but faster is faster, and in the race Rosberg just had it in the bag. He had speed on tap at the start to open a gap and brought it home only as quickly as he needed to. No other driver did … [Read more...] about Second Driver of the Weekend win for Rosberg · RaceFans
2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix driver ratings · RaceFans
It was a strange race for the front-runners in Abu Dhabi but a more typical affair further back. Here’s how the drivers got on in the final race weekend of the year. Mercedes Lewis Hamilton – Started on the right foot by leading Rosberg in both Friday sessions, despite a brief spin in first practice. He was imperious in qualifying, setting a pace Rosberg simply couldn’t match. Delaying Rosberg was obviously the correct tactics ; the argument he should have driven off and left things alone behind him is unrealistic. So why didn’t it work? Hamilton said slowing Rosberg down any more would have been dangerous , but it appeared he was too cautious about preserving his own position to really jeopardise Rosberg’s. He needed to to push things to the limit, putting himself at risk of being overtaken, and it seemed he couldn’t bring himself to do that. Nico Rosberg – Couldn’t keep up with Hamilton in qualifying but the chasing pack was half a second slower. Hamilton took care … [Read more...] about 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix driver ratings · RaceFans
