Alex Albon says F1 at the Nordschleife wouldn’t be ‘complicated’ to sort out
It would be fair to say Alex Albon fell in love with the Nordschleife when he raced there in DTM last year. So much so that not only has he thought about buying a house there, he also thinks the legendary circuit could be suitable for Formula 1 in the future. The Nordschleife is the iconic German track nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’, a 13-mile circuit on which Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident in 1976. It is adjacent to the Nurburgring, a more conventional track which staged an F1 grand prix as recently as 2020 during a season when the schedule had to be much changed due to the pandemic. In 2021, having been dropped from a race seat by Red Bull , Albon kept his eye in racing-wise by taking part in the DTM Series, driving a Ferrari touring car entered by the AlphaTauri team, before bagging a place back on the F1 grid with Williams for this year. The London-born driver gained his only win in 16 races at the Nurburgring on the officially-named sprint circuit, but he … [Read more...] about Alex Albon says F1 at the Nordschleife wouldn’t be ‘complicated’ to sort out
‘Dream lives on’ of F1 return to Nordschleife
Nurburgring officials have revealed “the dream lives on” for Formula 1 to return to the Nordschleife – but that no “serious discussions” have taken place. A first F1 race for seven years at the Nurburgring took place recently, but a subject of fascination for many of the drivers involved was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’ by Jackie Stewart after it hosted F1 in the 1950s and 60s, the Nordschleife was modified in the early 1970s for safety reasons and continued to stage the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. Nowadays, the Nordschleife, which measures 12.9 miles compared to its former 14.1-mile distance, is the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. Formula 1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – … [Read more...] about ‘Dream lives on’ of F1 return to Nordschleife
Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
Listen to this article A team that began its time in Formula 1 under controversial circumstances, Arrows’ 24-year spell in the championship came to an end in 2002 amid mounting financial problems. Still the team with the most world championship race starts (counting the Footwork years) under its belt – at 382 – without ever taking a victory, Arrows came close to troubling the top step of the podium throughout its curious history – but fell short each time. The British squad, started up by former Lotus F1 driver Jackie Oliver, Alan Rees and Franco Ambrosio, went through multiple ownership changes in its latter years. It spent six seasons as Footwork in the 1990s, before Tom Walkinshaw took over for 1997 and restored the Arrows name. Although the team made an encouraging start under his tenure, with the Scot’s investment helping to bring 1996 champion Damon Hill and famed designer John Barnard into the team, it arguably over-reached its capabilities with an in-house engine … [Read more...] about Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1
Toto Wolff has urged Nurburgring bosses not to “destroy” the Nordschleife for the sake of trying to restore Formula 1 to the iconic German circuit. The Mercedes team principal discussed the topic in Formula 1’s Beyond The Grid podcast, shortly after the Nurburgring staged its first F1 race for seven years, the Eifel Grand Prix. A subject of fascination for many of the drivers was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’, the 12.9-mile circuit staged the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. It is now the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. F1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – plus, it would require a huge amount of work to bring it up to modern F1 safety standards. Track designer Hermann Tilke is … [Read more...] about Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1
F1: Hamilton is ‘losing over a tenth to Russell on the straight’ · RaceFans
Lewis Hamilton says the poor ride Mercedes have over the bumps in Baku is costing him more time than his team mate. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed Hamilton’s car is in a different configuration to that of his team mate George Russell due to the experiments the team is conducting to solve the problems with its W13. “Today I was losing over a tenth just on the straight line because of the bottoming compared to George,” said Hamilton after qualifying. “So it is what it is, we keep working on it.” The team appeared to make progress with its porpoising problem with the upgrade it introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix. But the behaviour has returned in Baku, where the long, bumpy straights appear to have exacerbated their familiar trouble with the W13. “I miss already Barcelona, just driving down the straight no problem,” Hamilton admitted when asked by RaceFans. He noted his former team mate Valtteri Bottas , who is … [Read more...] about F1: Hamilton is ‘losing over a tenth to Russell on the straight’ · RaceFans
Stoffel Vandoorne banishes F1 demons by becoming Formula E World Champion
Stoffel Vandoorne has said he “left nothing on the table” en route to winning the Formula E World Championship this year. The Belgian driver has won his first championship since his dominant GP2 Series victory in 2015, after claiming the 2021/2022 Formula E World Championship following a dramatic title showdown in Seoul this weekend. Vandoorne headed to Korea with a commanding position in the Drivers’ Championship, before a dramatic first race on Saturday saw Mitch Evans come through to take the win and keep his own title hopes alive. With Edoardo Mortara winning the season finale in Seoul on Sunday, Vandoorne’s second place was enough to take the title as he finished the season on 213 points and 33 clear of Evans. Top teams unlikely to run third drivers – Button · RaceFans
Jenson Button says F1’s leading teams are unlikely to run junior drivers in practice sessions in order to receive extra tyres. A plan is being considered under which teams will receive an extra set of tyres for the first practice session for a new driver to use. Button said he was supportive of the plan although he didn’t expect McLaren would take advantage of it. “I don’t think you’ll see many of the big teams having a third driver drive the car on Friday,” he said. “I think it’s a good idea to have extra sets for young drivers, yes. It’s very difficult for a young driver to have mileage in a Formula One car. They need to bring a lot of money, it seems, to have the opportunity. “But now that they have extra tyres it could actually be useful for middle-of-the-grid teams and lower to have a third driver for more mileage, more information. There are quite a few test drivers that will sit around and watch Friday, Saturday, Sunday every other weekend and they don’t get to drive … [Read more...] about Top teams unlikely to run third drivers – Button · RaceFans
Jean Alesi: Ferrari ‘only missing little things’ and ‘need more time’
Former Ferrari racer Jean Alesi has called for patience with the Scuderia, saying Mattia Binotto needs time to build a winning team. Alesi has become the latest voice to call for calm regarding Ferrari, as the Scuderia’s troubled 2022 has seen the team crumble away from an early championship lead. Last week, former team boss Cesare Fiorio showed his support for Mattia Binotto as Ferrari have become race winners again after failing to win anything in 2020 and ’21. At the beginning of F1’s revolutionary new ruleset, Ferrari sprung back to the front of the sport as Charles Leclerc won two of the first three races. This netted him a 46-point lead over Max Verstappen, whose Red Bull retired from the same two races. However, through various mistakes and reliability issues, Leclerc now trails Verstappen by 80 points in the Drivers’ Championship. Ferrari, too, have fallen away in the Constructors’ Championship. Now trailing Red Bull by 97 points , they are just 30 points … [Read more...] about Jean Alesi: Ferrari ‘only missing little things’ and ‘need more time’
