Jack Doohan has said he would find it “very difficult” to turn down the chance to race for Alpine in 2022, if the team made that call. The Australian racer believes he’s ready to make the step up to Formula 1, should the unlikely scenario arise that he gets a call up from Alpine. Alpine are currently in a state of limbo over the identity of their second driver for 2023, after confirming Oscar Piastri for the role following Fernando Alonso’s departure for Aston Martin. Immediately after the confirmation of Piastri, the reigning Formula 2 Champion released a statement on social media to deny that he has signed a deal with Alpine and definitively will not be racing for the French marque next season. Piastri’s public refusal to join Alpine for what would be his rookie season is due to an apparent tug-of-war over his services between Alpine and McLaren – the Woking-based team signing Piastri as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo. Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1
Toto Wolff has urged Nurburgring bosses not to “destroy” the Nordschleife for the sake of trying to restore Formula 1 to the iconic German circuit. The Mercedes team principal discussed the topic in Formula 1’s Beyond The Grid podcast, shortly after the Nurburgring staged its first F1 race for seven years, the Eifel Grand Prix. A subject of fascination for many of the drivers was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’, the 12.9-mile circuit staged the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. It is now the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. F1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – plus, it would require a huge amount of work to bring it up to modern F1 safety standards. Track designer Hermann Tilke is … [Read more...] about Wolff: Don’t destroy Nordschleife for F1
F1: Hamilton is ‘losing over a tenth to Russell on the straight’ · RaceFans
Lewis Hamilton says the poor ride Mercedes have over the bumps in Baku is costing him more time than his team mate. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Team principal Toto Wolff confirmed Hamilton’s car is in a different configuration to that of his team mate George Russell due to the experiments the team is conducting to solve the problems with its W13. “Today I was losing over a tenth just on the straight line because of the bottoming compared to George,” said Hamilton after qualifying. “So it is what it is, we keep working on it.” The team appeared to make progress with its porpoising problem with the upgrade it introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix. But the behaviour has returned in Baku, where the long, bumpy straights appear to have exacerbated their familiar trouble with the W13. “I miss already Barcelona, just driving down the straight no problem,” Hamilton admitted when asked by RaceFans. He noted his former team mate Valtteri Bottas , who is … [Read more...] about F1: Hamilton is ‘losing over a tenth to Russell on the straight’ · RaceFans

Aston Martin set to lose their top-performing driver for the third time in a row · RaceFans
Sebastian Vettel has decided to hang up his helmet at the end of the season. It’s a decision which would likely have been received very differently had he taken it two years ago. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Back then,Vettel was on his way out of Ferrari after Charles Leclerc had wrecked the four-time champion’s claim to be the team’s top driver. Over his final season in red, Vettel was out-scored by his team mate by a ratio of nearly three to one. He fared better against Lance Stroll at Aston Martin last year and little has changed this year. However the team has taken another step backwards in competitiveness, so the pair are fighting over fewer points than before. Stroll has managed four points-scoring finishes, all for 10th place and a single point each time. Vettel has done slightly better, climbing as high as sixth in Baku (also the scene of his best finish last year), giving him a clear lead over his team mate in the championship. This is … [Read more...] about Aston Martin set to lose their top-performing driver for the third time in a row · RaceFans
Hamilton confounds his detractors again as Mercedes reverse early-season slump · RaceFans
It was a visibly pained Lewis Hamilton that emerged from the cockpit of his Mercedes after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free His agony was the consequence of the especially fierce punishment he suffered on the long, bumpy straights of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Montreal , the W13 smashing along its bumps so hard his back eventually went numb. This was the nadir of Hamilton’s season so far. After Baku he’d been beaten home by his new team mate George Russell for seven consecutive races. Social media’s inexhaustible thirst for knee-jerk punditry was kept well-supplied by critics insisting the seven-times world champion was finished. But just five races later, how they have quietened. Mercedes appear to have got to the bottom of the porpoising dilemma which plagued them early in the season and begun tapping into the performance offered by the car. Suddenly Hamilton appears to have clicked with the car, and Russell is hardly … [Read more...] about Hamilton confounds his detractors again as Mercedes reverse early-season slump · RaceFans
Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
There’s no doubt that the Nurburgring’s Nordschleife is an icon of motor racing, but Daniel Ricciardo has no intention of competing on it. Nicknamed “The Green Hell” by Sir Jackie Stewart, the infamous Nordschleife circuit hosted various German GPs throughout the history of Formula 1 between 1950-1976. It was ultimately dropped from the calendar due to safety concerns, though the current 12.93-mile Nordschleife track, consisting of 154 turns, remains arguably the most famous circuit in the world. While it’s regularly used for endurance racing such as the 24 hours of the Nürburgring, which combines the Grand Prix circuit and the Nordschleife, the track is also used regularly for car testing and promotional content. And Ricciardo got the chance to sample it in a Renault Megane RS at the Eifel Grand Prix during the filming of a team movie. And it’s safe to say Ricciardo won’t be signing himself up for the 24 hours of the Nürburgring any time soon. “I’m a bit shocked, … [Read more...] about Ricciardo says ‘no thank you’ to the Nordschleife
Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
WASHINGTON - Natasha Cloud writhed on the floor under the basket while teammates gathered around her Sunday and Entertainment and Sports Arena fell silent. The Mystics' leader and longest-tenured player would eventually get up and shoot a pair of free throws before checking out for the rest of the game. She limped to the locker room and never returned to the bench. The starting point guard was officially ruled out with a knee injury, but the team was adamant that holding her out was precautionary. The Washington Mystics had nothing to play for in their regular season finale - a 95-83 victory over the Indiana Fever - as they already had the No. 5 playoff seed locked up and will face the No. 4 Storm in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday in Seattle. Coach Mike Thibault, however, committed to playing his starters significant minutes Sunday. Washington closed the season with its second straight win, both against the league-worst Fever. "Psychologically, I think it's good … [Read more...] about Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
