Albon: Russell the first out of junior Brits to make ‘big step’
Coming up through the ranks with George Russell and Lando Norris, Alex Albon says the Mercedes driver is the first of the trio to make a “big step forward”. Rivals since their karting days, Albon, Russell and Norris, although a few years younger, have often raced head-to-head. The most notable of their rivalries coming in 2018 when the trio fought for the Formula 2 championship title. That went to Russell ahead of Norris and Albon, all three stepping up into Formula 1 the following season. Albon’s career, though, hit a stumbling block, the driver the first to join a current race-winning team when he was promoted to Red Bull mid-2019 but he was also the first left worrying about his career when he was dropped from the F1 grid for the 2021 championship. The drops of champagne had barely dried in Montreal before Red Bull’s attention turned firmly to the British Grand Prix. With six victories in succession, 2022 has rapidly become that sort of season for Red Bull and the races cannot come quickly enough as Max Verstappen continues to march towards a second consecutive World Championship. With memories of last year’s event – and the first-lap collision at Copse between Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton – still fresh in the mind, though, it is clear Silverstone is not just another race in the minds of Red Bull. “We’re going there fired up and trying to put right what happened last year,” team principal Christian Horner told Sky Sports underneath the podium in Canada. In brief Lotterer Jakarta penalty rescinded before Marrakech round, changing result Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Lotterer has been restored to eighth place in the last round at Jakarta, Indonesia after he was cleared of responsibility for a collision with Nyck de Vries during the early stages of the race. Stewards initially determined Lotterer collided with De Vries, giving him a puncture which meant he had to pit. Lotterer was given a five-second time penalty and one penalty point against on his e-license, the Formula E equivalent of a super license. The penalty meant that Lotterer was initially recorded as finishing the Jakarta Eprix in 11th.
