Nurburgring officials have revealed “the dream lives on” for Formula 1 to return to the Nordschleife – but that no “serious discussions” have taken place. A first F1 race for seven years at the Nurburgring took place recently, but a subject of fascination for many of the drivers involved was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’ by Jackie Stewart after it hosted F1 in the 1950s and 60s, the Nordschleife was modified in the early 1970s for safety reasons and continued to stage the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. Nowadays, the Nordschleife, which measures 12.9 miles compared to its former 14.1-mile distance, is the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. Formula 1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – … [Read more...] about ‘Dream lives on’ of F1 return to Nordschleife

Offense comes up blank as Nats lose series in Juan Soto’s return
Manager Dave Martinez looked to Keibert Ruiz with one out in the seventh inning to provide a jolt to an offense that hadn't had much energy. At that stage of the game, the Washington Nationals hadn't scored and had only four hits. They had left two runners on base, but here was a spot for Ruiz to come through with another pair on. Ruiz fell behind in the count 0-2, then swung at a low curveball and hit a groundball toward Padres second baseman Brandon Drury. Fans at Nationals Park groaned as the ball went into his glove, then was quickly flipped to shortstop Jake Cronenworth, who fired a strike to former Nationals first baseman Josh Bell to end the frame. It was the Nationals' league-worst 110th double play; they grounded into another in the eighth inning in a 6-0 loss to the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Since the start of July, Washington has won just one series. "Some days, you got to tip your hat off to their pitchers," Martinez said. "[Starter Blake] Snell was good. Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
Listen to this article A team that began its time in Formula 1 under controversial circumstances, Arrows’ 24-year spell in the championship came to an end in 2002 amid mounting financial problems. Still the team with the most world championship race starts (counting the Footwork years) under its belt – at 382 – without ever taking a victory, Arrows came close to troubling the top step of the podium throughout its curious history – but fell short each time. The British squad, started up by former Lotus F1 driver Jackie Oliver, Alan Rees and Franco Ambrosio, went through multiple ownership changes in its latter years. It spent six seasons as Footwork in the 1990s, before Tom Walkinshaw took over for 1997 and restored the Arrows name. Although the team made an encouraging start under his tenure, with the Scot’s investment helping to bring 1996 champion Damon Hill and famed designer John Barnard into the team, it arguably over-reached its capabilities with an in-house engine … [Read more...] about Top 10 Arrows F1 drivers ranked: Hill, Warwick, Fittipaldi and more
Would McLaren be right to drop Ricciardo for 2023? · RaceFans
When McLaren first announced in 2020 that Daniel Ricciardo would be joining them to fill the seat that would be vacated by Carlos Sainz Jnr for 2021, it seemed like the perfect match. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free McLaren were gaining an established grand prix winner with nine-and-a-half seasons of experience who had brought Renault back onto the podium multiple times during 2020. Alongside the highly promising talent Lando Norris, it would be hard to blame McLaren CEO Zak Brown and team principal Andreas Seidl for feeling very encouraged for the team’s future. But whatever McLaren, Ricciardo or the team’s legions of fans expected from having the Australian join the team, it would not have been a pattern of consistently underwhelming results and a total points difference of 102 between Norris and Ricciardo scored over 35 races together so far. With Formula 1 resting over the summer, rumours and reports indicate that McLaren are now actively looking to … [Read more...] about Would McLaren be right to drop Ricciardo for 2023? · RaceFans

Fernando Alonso’s DRS failure during the Bahrain Grand Prix was caused by a mechanical breakage, according to Ferrari . Alonso’s DRS jammed open after he overtook Nico Rosberg on lap five. He pitted to have the wing closed on lap seven, but it failed again the next time he used it, forcing him to return to the pits again and not use DRS throughout the rest of the race. The team said it was the first such failure for the device in three years of operation. Ferrari believe Alonso would have been able to challenge Sebastian Vettel for victory had it not been for the failure. Team principal Stefano Domenicali said: “It?s hard to recall a race where so many things went wrong.” “The DRS failure prevented Fernando, who yet again produced a great performance, from fighting Vettel for the win.” Domenicali added the team must place “renewed attention” on reliability, which has been a strength of their cars in recent seasons. “We must also continue to develop the car and … [Read more...] about Alonso’s DRS failure the first of its kind – Ferrari · RaceFans
EXPLAINER: Tension between Nicaragua and the Catholic Church
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 MEXICO CITY (AP) — Earlier this month Nicaragua shuttered seven radio stations belonging to the Catholic Church and launched an investigation into the bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, accusing him of inciting violent actors “to carry out acts of hate against the population.” This is not the first time President Daniel Ortega has moved aggressively to silence critics of his administration. In 2018 the government raided the headquarters of the newspaper Confidencial, led by journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, who is considered one of the most prominent critics of Ortega. Then, throughout 2021, authorities arrested seven potential presidential candidates for that year’s November elections. A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 TAMPA, Fla. - State Attorney Andrew Warren was waiting for a grand jury to issue indictments in two rape and murder cases he had been working on for three years when he glanced down at his phone and saw an email from an attorney for Gov. Ron DeSantis. It said he was suspended from his job. Stunned, Warren quickly went to his office to consult with his staff. Not long after, there was a knock at the door. An armed major from the county sheriff's office and a man in a suit from the governor's office carrying a copy of DeSantis' executive order suspending him were looking for him. "He said, essentially, 'The governor has suspended you and you need to leave the office now,'" Warren, a Democrat, recalled of DeSantis' aide. "So within maybe seven minutes from getting the email, I was outside, on the street. The major offered me a ride home because they … [Read more...] about A progressive prosecutor clashed with DeSantis – now he’s out of a job
Kawasaki “can’t be disappointed” with second in Suzuka 8 Hours
Listen to this article 2019 champion Kawasaki lacked the pace to defend its crown on the return of the Suzuka enduro after a two-year hiatus, with Haslam, Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes finishing a lap down on the winning Honda crew comprising Tetsuta Nagashima, Takumi Takahashi and Iker Lecuona. Although Haslam could battle with Takahashi in the early laps and even briefly took the lead, aided by a safety car appearance, it soon became clear that the ZX-10RR was no match for the CBR1000RR-R and the Kawasaki trio continued to slip backwards during the race. A third-hour race intervention further dented its chances as Lowes was picked up by the second of two safety cars, before a fall for Rea in traffic eliminated any opportunity for a comeback. However, Haslam feels Kawasaki should be satisfied with its performance in the Japanese endurance classic, even if it fell short of scoring back-to-back victories after its 2019 triumph. “It's always nice to finish the 8 Hour but … [Read more...] about Kawasaki “can’t be disappointed” with second in Suzuka 8 Hours
