Mark Webber has described his relationship with the retiring Sebastian Vettel as “pretty tense” and “strained” during their rivalry at Red Bull. The pair were team-mates from 2009 to 2013, a period in which Vettel won four World Championships, while Webber managed three third place finishes before retiring at the end of the 2013 season. They also shared a team rivalry perhaps only beaten by Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton in recent years, which came to a flashpoint in Malaysia in 2013 when the young German ignored a team order to overtake Webber and win the race. Webber maintains they are friends now but has admitted things at the time got “pretty tense” and was “a bit strained.” “I mean, god, we’re fine now,” Webber told F1.com. “It was obviously pretty tense when you’re fighting for championships at the front together. We had a few years where I was [in contention]; a couple of years where I wasn’t. “It always gets a bit strained – it’s easier to be team mates when … [Read more...] about Mark Webber reflects on ‘pretty tense’ and ‘strained’ rivalry with Sebastian Vettel

The excruciating echo of grief in Uvalde
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 UVALDE, Texas — In a cemetery on the edge of Uvalde, a cluster of fresh graves had been carved from the parched, rocky earth. The dead were claiming new ground: No sod had been laid. No trees had taken root to shield against an unrelenting South Texas sun. Uvalde had weathered loss, but never anything like this. The community had crossed into unfamiliar terrain, as the massacre at Robb Elementary School created a marathon of mourning that started with vigils in the hours after the May 24 attack and continued for weeks until the last victims were buried. On June 3, Javier and Gloria Cazares buried their daughter Jacklyn in one of the graves. On June 8, they returned for the burial of their niece, Annabell Rodriguez. A few days later, on a Sunday evening, they were back again with Jacklyn’s older sister, Jazmin. They had just been to the visitation for another classmate who was killed. … [Read more...] about The excruciating echo of grief in Uvalde
Carson Wentz’s training camp performance has been consistently inconsistent
In the Washington Commanders' 10 training camp practices so far, quarterback Carson Wentz has been consistently uneven, sometimes throwing incredible darts and other times inexplicable ducks. He has hit hard throws deep and missed easy ones short and they've occasionally come close enough together to prompt the question: How? "[His accuracy] is a lot better than you give him credit for, just because of the way things happen in practice," Coach Ron Rivera said Saturday night after the team's workout at FedEx Field. "There's a lot of little nuances that we see and that we look at and get to review. There are some inaccuracies, but it's nothing that we are overly concerned about." The problem, Rivera argued, is circumstantial. Wentz is still adjusting to a new scheme with new terminology and new progressions, as well as a fast group of receivers who resemble "a 4x100 track team." Give him enough reps, Rivera said, and the offense will be good. For now, though, even die-hard fans … [Read more...] about Carson Wentz’s training camp performance has been consistently inconsistent
Qatar MotoGP: Bastianini tops FP3 to push Quartararo into Q1
Listen to this article With FP3 being run in the daylight in windier and dustier conditions than Friday, combined time improvements were few and far between on Saturday afternoon. Friday pacesetter Alex Rins on the Suzuki set the early pace in the session with a 1m55.562s, before Aprilia’s Aleix Espargaro took over with a 1m55.016s. Rins would return to the top of the order with a 1m54.803s, and the 2022 Suzuki continues to look like a weapon following a strong pre-season and opening day to the campaign. Reigning world champion Quartararo took over top spot with a 1m54.794s on his factory Yamaha with just under 20 minutes to go. Fellow Frenchman Johann Zarco on the Pramac Ducati – which is running the full 2022-spec engine and not the hybrid 2021/2022 version the factory team duo are using – edged ahead with a 1m54.441s. This lap was an improvement on his best from Friday, though still only kept him in 16th on the combined order and out of a Q2 spot. Power clings onto Detroit Grand Prix victory under pressure from Rossi · RaceFans
Will Power avenged a bitter defeat in last year’s Detroit Grand Prix by taking the win in the final IndyCar race held around the Belle Isle Street Circuit, charging from 16th on the grid and managing his final stint to perfection to cap off his first win of the season. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free Power was one of the few drivers to start the race on the harder primary tyres – which would be the preferred race tyre as it was last year. It took him less than ten laps to work his way into the top five. On lap 14, he overtook pole winner and Penske team mate Josef Newgarden – who started on the softer alternate tyres – for the race lead. Power pitted once on lap 25, going to another set of primary tyres, with the aim of stretching out his advantage before doing a shorter final stint on the alternates. His competition was not Newgarden – but Alexander Rossi , who discarded the alternate tyres after four laps and committed to a three-stop strategy. McLaughlin remains convinced he can win 2022 IndyCar title
Listen to this article The three-time Supercars champion came into the weekend 81 points behind teammate and points leader Will Power, but says that with four rounds remaining – with over 200 points on offer – he still has a chance of overhauling the six drivers ahead of him in the points race. “Yeah, the belief is there, absolutely,” said the 29-year-old New Zealander. “I've said it all along, I feel like a little bit of an underdog in this. There's no reason why we can't go on a run. “These are four tracks that I really enjoy [coming up],” he said with reference to his 2021 performances. “Gateway we ran fourth. Portland I outqualified my teammates. Feel like our cars are quicker there this year. No reason why we can't be fast there again. “Laguna, I love that track. I just made a mess of qualifying – as I did all last year! So, really excited for this final run. “Anything can happen. It's IndyCar. We have a solid week, focus on ourselves, who knows what will happen? … [Read more...] about McLaughlin remains convinced he can win 2022 IndyCar title
