The Liberia-flagged Brave Commander departed from the Ukrainian port of Yuzhne, east of Odesa, according to regional governor Maksym Marchenko. It plans to sail to Djibouti, where the grain will be unloaded and transferred to Ethiopia under the World Food Program initiative. EXPLAINER: Tension between Nicaragua and the Catholic Church
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 MEXICO CITY (AP) — Earlier this month Nicaragua shuttered seven radio stations belonging to the Catholic Church and launched an investigation into the bishop of Matagalpa, Monsignor Rolando Álvarez, accusing him of inciting violent actors “to carry out acts of hate against the population.” This is not the first time President Daniel Ortega has moved aggressively to silence critics of his administration. In 2018 the government raided the headquarters of the newspaper Confidencial, led by journalist Carlos Fernando Chamorro, who is considered one of the most prominent critics of Ortega. Then, throughout 2021, authorities arrested seven potential presidential candidates for that year’s November elections. Here's a look at the fraught relationship between the church and the government amid a political standoff … [Read more...] about EXPLAINER: Tension between Nicaragua and the Catholic Church
Mysterious Ferrari Formula 1 Car Spotted Again On Czech Highway
Listen to this article Formula 1 is back in the Czech Republic, and no we're not talking about a Grand Prix schedule in the nation located in Central Europe – something that has never happened before. We're talking about the infamous Formula 1 car that's being driven on public roads. A few years ago, a red Ferrari F1 car was seen coasting on the D4 highway between Příbram and Dobříš. The Czech police asked for help then to track down the driver, which they did. The 45-year-old suspect escaped the penalties since he wasn't clearly identified, thanks to the helmet he was wearing. The penalties would have involved getting banned from using the thoroughfare for up to one year, plus tens of thousands of dollars in total fines. Those penalties appear to have no effect on the offender as he's back on the road again. This time, he was captured on an up-close video by one of the readers of iDNES, embedded atop this page. Toto Wolff: Sergio Perez replacing Lewis Hamilton rumours were ‘complete bullsh*t’
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has strongly denied he has spoken to other drivers, including Sergio Perez, to replace Lewis Hamilton. Following the very controversial way in which Hamilton saw an eighth World Championship title slip away from him in Abu Dhabi at the end of the 2021 season, there were strong suggestions that the Mercedes driver may not return for 2022. Those rumours were put to bed when a defiant Hamilton was part of the Mercedes W13 launch in February. However, with Mercedes well out of the title picture in 2022 due to an uncompetitive car, the retirement talk quickly returned. But, while shortlists were being put together by the media and fans alike as to who might replace Hamilton should he decide to leave at the end of this season or the next, Wolff said no such plans are being made by him and Mercedes. One of the names put through the rumour mill was Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, yet Wolff has made it clear those reports, and any other reports for that … [Read more...] about Toto Wolff: Sergio Perez replacing Lewis Hamilton rumours were ‘complete bullsh*t’
Norris had to adjust to 2022 McLaren F1 car that was “very unsuited for me”
Listen to this article Norris has led McLaren ’s efforts so far this season, scoring 76 of its 95 points and recording its best result of the season by finishing third at Imola in April. Teammate Daniel Ricciardo has failed to match Norris for form, prompting McLaren to swoop for Oscar Piastri as a replacement for 2023 . Ricciardo’s struggles with the current McLaren car have been well-documented, but Norris has also found it tricky to get to grips with the MCL36 at times, forcing him to adjust his driving style. “I don’t think you can probably in any way say the car is made around me,” Norris told Motorsport.com in an interview ahead of the summer break. “From what I want from the car, it's like the opposite of what it’s giving me at the minute! And yeah, I would say the car I have now is completely not what I want for my driving style, and very unsuited for me. “It’s not a bad thing, it’s just that’s what it is, and you have to adapt to it. That’s why I … [Read more...] about Norris had to adjust to 2022 McLaren F1 car that was “very unsuited for me”
‘Dream lives on’ of F1 return to Nordschleife
Nurburgring officials have revealed “the dream lives on” for Formula 1 to return to the Nordschleife – but that no “serious discussions” have taken place. A first F1 race for seven years at the Nurburgring took place recently, but a subject of fascination for many of the drivers involved was the Nordschleife circuit which adjoins the modern track. Nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’ by Jackie Stewart after it hosted F1 in the 1950s and 60s, the Nordschleife was modified in the early 1970s for safety reasons and continued to stage the German Grand Prix up to 1976 when Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident. Nowadays, the Nordschleife, which measures 12.9 miles compared to its former 14.1-mile distance, is the scene of several touring car races and also an annual 24-hour event for GT endurance cars. Formula 1 cars have been driven around the circuit for exhibition purposes, but given the Nordschleife’s length there would be various logistical difficulties in holding a race there – … [Read more...] about ‘Dream lives on’ of F1 return to Nordschleife
80 years later, Navajo Code Talker marks group’s early days

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 PHOENIX (AP) — It’s been 80 years since the first Navajo Code Talkers joined the Marines, transmitting messages using a code based on their then-unwritten native language to confound Japanese military cryptologists during World War II — and Thomas H. Begay, one of the last living members of the group, still remembers the struggle. “It was the hardest thing to learn,” the 98-year-old Begay said Sunday at a Phoenix ceremony marking the anniversary. “But we were able to develop a code that couldn’t be broken by the enemy of the United States of America.” Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the U.S. Marines to serve as Code Talkers during the war. Begay is one of three who is still alive to talk about it. The Code Talkers participated in all assaults the Marines led in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 … [Read more...] about 80 years later, Navajo Code Talker marks group’s early days
Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
WASHINGTON - Natasha Cloud writhed on the floor under the basket while teammates gathered around her Sunday and Entertainment and Sports Arena fell silent. The Mystics' leader and longest-tenured player would eventually get up and shoot a pair of free throws before checking out for the rest of the game. She limped to the locker room and never returned to the bench. The starting point guard was officially ruled out with a knee injury, but the team was adamant that holding her out was precautionary. The Washington Mystics had nothing to play for in their regular season finale - a 95-83 victory over the Indiana Fever - as they already had the No. 5 playoff seed locked up and will face the No. 4 Storm in a best-of-three series beginning Thursday in Seattle. Coach Mike Thibault, however, committed to playing his starters significant minutes Sunday. Washington closed the season with its second straight win, both against the league-worst Fever. "Psychologically, I think it's good … [Read more...] about Mystics close regular season with win, but Natasha Cloud hurts knee
‘Silly season’ waits but 2015 rumours still firing
Listen to this article Who is on the list? The report said Nico Hulkenberg, despite being close to a new deal to stay with Force India in 2015, is at the top of the German carmaker's shortlist. Theoretically, Porsche's supposed plan is possible, given that the F1 calendar is not scheduled to clash with the fabled endurance race next year. Auto Bild said Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button might also be in Porsche's sights, having already signed the former Red Bull driver Mark Webber this year. In truth, the F1 'season season' is in a holding pattern again until Alonso's Ferrari exit and Sebastian Vettel's move to replace him are confirmed officially. Lotus' Romain Grosjean makes no secret of the fact that he is one of the drivers who is patiently waiting. "Any Formula One driver dreams of driving for Ferrari," the Frenchman told Europe 1 radio. Asked if he has been in talks with the Italian team, Grosjean admitted: "Yes, everyone, but the paddock is a small … [Read more...] about ‘Silly season’ waits but 2015 rumours still firing
