The Belgian driver has won his first championship since his dominant GP2 Series victory in 2015, after claiming the 2021/2022 Formula E World Championship following a dramatic title showdown in Seoul this weekend. So much so that not only has he thought about buying a house there, he also thinks the legendary circuit could be suitable for Formula 1 in the future. The Nordschleife is the iconic German track nicknamed ‘The Green Hell’, a 13-mile circuit on which Niki Lauda suffered a near-fatal accident in 1976. It is adjacent to the Nurburgring, a more conventional track which staged an F1 grand prix as recently as 2020 during a season when the schedule had to be much changed due to the pandemic. Popovici's time of 46.86 eclipsed the former event record by 0.05 seconds, and he beat Saturday's second-fastest competitor, Kristóf Milák, by 0.61. "It felt great, and it's very special to break this record which was set here in 2009 by César Cielo," Popovici said via the Associated Press. Though announcers declared Popovici the odds-on favorite entering Saturday's final, his win hardly appeared inevitable at the halfway mark of the race, as he trailed France's Maxime Grousset with 50 meters remaining.
