Russell and Bottas collided while battling for position on the run to the first chicane, causing a significant crash that left debris strewn across the track. Race control took the decision at first to deploy the safety car before issuing a red flag on Lap 34 of the 63-lap race at Imola. The crash was the latest in a string of incidents leading up to the red flag as drivers made the switch from intermediate to slick tyres, leaving them looking for grip in the greasy conditions. Lewis Hamilton slid off the track while hunting down race leader Max Verstappen at Tosa, causing damage to his front wing and dropping him back to ninth place. This was shortly followed by the crash between Bottas and Russell, both of whom were left fuming by the incident. The onboard replay showed Russell gaining on Bottas down the main straight and moving to the right-hand side of the track to try and overtake around the outside, only to touch the white line. It caused Russell's … [Read more...] about Emilia Romagna GP red-flagged after Bottas/Russell crash

Verstappen escapes punishment for reversing on track
Verstappen locked up and went straight on at Ste Devote and had to reverse onto the racing line to get back on track. As he did so, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel was approaching the first corner and took to the pitlane exit road to avoid the Red Bull. Verstappen was summoned to the stewards, who also reviewed evidence, but was cleared because approaching drivers were being warned a car had gone off by yellow flags. The stewards thus decided Verstappen rejoined “under yellow flags and in a manner that posed no danger to the other drivers”. Verstappen was second-fastest behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo in FP1. Red Bull is anticipating a much more competitive race weekend on a circuit that should expose its engine performance deficit less than usual. shares comments … [Read more...] about Verstappen escapes punishment for reversing on track
Allison doesn’t want Mercedes F1 team boss role – Wolff
It was announced last week that, as of July 1, Allison will hold a newly-created position of chief technical officer, a change that some interpreted as a possible first step to him eventually being the overall head of the team. Wolff retains the team principal job for the foreseeable future, having explored his options over the past year. The Austrian has made it clear that he will eventually move aside, but he stressed that the job won't go to Allison. "I would say if you look at things, he would absolutely be capable to be the team principal," Wolff said of Allison. "And also the people here, there's so much respect [for him] within the organisation. "But the thing is very easy. He said, 'Never, ever I would do this. Team principal requires different skills.' And so he said, 'No, thank you. No'. "James and I speak multiple times every single day. And we're totally coordinated on the strategic direction of Mercedes Motorsport, and Mercedes Grand Prix. So much earlier … [Read more...] about Allison doesn’t want Mercedes F1 team boss role – Wolff
Norris admits he “effed it all up” in Imola qualifying
Norris had already been rapid with a third-fastest time in Q1 and second place in Q2 and looked set to record his best ever qualifying result in a tightly contested Q3 shootout. The Briton set a time which would have been good for third on the grid, behind polesitter Lewis Hamilton while splitting the Red Bulls of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen, but saw his fastest laptime deleted due exceeding the track limits at Imola's Turn 9. Instead, Norris ended up seventh on the grid, behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo, courtesy of his second-best laptime which was four tenths off the frontrunners. Even though his track limits violation appeared extremely marginal Norris took the full blame for losing his best time, admitting he "effed it all up". "Yeah, pretty disappointed, pretty annoyed with myself," Norris told Sky Sports F1. "I think it was a very good day until then, the team did an awesome job. You know, the car really came alive in qualifying. "We made a lot of … [Read more...] about Norris admits he “effed it all up” in Imola qualifying
