As reported earlier this month, the FIA ad WRC Promoter had asked WRC drivers to nominate a representative to join the WRC Commission to offer competitors a voice and feedback on key topics and possible regulation changes. The decision to create this new position has come in response to criticism from drivers and teams this year over concerns that championship’s appeal is diminishing. This has since triggered the WRC Promoter and FIA to consult with drivers and resulted in a raft of proposals to improve the championship - some of which that could be introduced next year - that were discussed in Friday’s commission meeting. The meeting was also observed by Martin, co-driver to Toyota’s Elfyn Evans , having been nominated to represent WRC competitors. The experienced co-driver offers a wealth of experience to the decision making process having made 172 WRC starts, claiming six wins. Martin has also co-driven for the late Craig Breen and former M-Sport driver Matthew … [Read more...] about Evans co-driver Scott Martin lands WRC Commission role

Redding joins Bonovo in WSBK 2024 as BMW retains him as factory rider
Redding will join Garrett Gerloff at BMW’s secondary WSBK squad in 2024, with the announcement coinciding with the news that Michael van der Mark will remain at the works outfit alongside new recruit Toprak Razgatlioglu. Redding’s future at BMW had been in doubt ever since the German marque lured away 2021 champion Razgatlioglu to lead the development of its bike, having not found the kind of success it had hoped to achieve with the British rider. Redding’s contract with BMW was due to expire at the end of the 2023 season and his constant criticism of the M1000RR bike is understood to have irked the company’s senior management. However, the 30-year-old has now got a reprieve, with BMW electing to keep him within its fold for a third season, albeit by moving him to the Bonovo squad to make way for Razgatlioglu. However, BMW will strengthen its alliance with what was previously a satellite team, promising Bonovo that it will receive “equal support in terms of material … [Read more...] about Redding joins Bonovo in WSBK 2024 as BMW retains him as factory rider
Watch And Listen As Small-Scale V12 Engine Revs To 11,500 RPM
Who's ready to see the coolest 50cc engine of all time? This is a legit V12 that turns gasoline into internal combustion music, and boy does it sing. A digital readout shows it spinning at a sky-high 11,502 RPM and honestly, we have no idea if it goes higher. With custom headers, frankly, it doesn't need to go higher. It's pure mechanical music as-is. This is another small-scale engine from JohnnyQ90 on YouTube. We've featured his small V8s previously, both naturally aspirated and fitted with a tiny supercharger , and now it's time for the 12 lunger. This is a single overhead cam engine, filled with 1.5 ounces (45 milliliters) of 15w40 oil and running on 100 octane fuel. It's liquid-cooled, and on that front, this engine has a custom cooling system that started with an amazing bespoke fan. Milled from aluminum with black blades, it was a bit too small for the job as we see rather dramatically in the video. An 80mm computer fan was swapped in but that still … [Read more...] about Watch And Listen As Small-Scale V12 Engine Revs To 11,500 RPM

Ireland ERC: Breen holds off Kajetanowicz to win home rally
Breen, who drove a Citroen to his best-ever WRC finish of eighth earlier this year, kicked off the rally second behind Elfyn Evans after the first two stages. However, Evans was forced to retire in SS3 with an overheated engine and dropped out of contention. He was back on Day 2 to add a further four stage wins to his tally but failed to complete that day either after a crash. While Breen maintained a lead of nearly half a minute through the first day, his advantage shrunk to just eight seconds over the course of three stages on Saturday. Picking up the pace, he beat Kajetanowicz twice before suffering a puncture and only ending up ahead by five seconds with two stages to go. Breen doubled his lead by winning SS13 and, despite losing 40 seconds to the winner in the final test, he stayed ahead of Kajetanowicz. Northern Irishman Alastair Fisher completed the podium, having spent the rally less than 30 seconds behind the leader before losing some time in the penultimate … [Read more...] about Ireland ERC: Breen holds off Kajetanowicz to win home rally
WRC drivers pushing for more compact event schedules
WRC Promoter has collated a raft of ideas over the last three months to improve the championship, having faced criticism from drivers concerned by the WRC's appeal and perceived lack of direction. These proposals are set to be discussed by the WRC Commission on Friday to decide which changes will be voted on by the FIA to be included at events next year. As previously reported , condensing events, changes to Sunday's format, a possible restructuring of the points system, more remote services and a move away from a central service park are believed to be up for discussion. High on the WRC drivers' wish list is a move to decrease the length of road sections compared to the amount of stage kilometres completed at rallies. At some events, crews will spend 12 hours on the road between leaving and returning to service park to complete 140 kilometres of competitive stages. "The biggest thing for me is how long days are for how many stage kilometres we do," Toyota's Elfyn Evans … [Read more...] about WRC drivers pushing for more compact event schedules
Indy NXT grad Simpson’s path to CGR seat aided by sports car experience
The Barbados-born Caymanian was signed as a development driver with CGR in May 2022, only two races into his Indy NXT career that already featured a fifth-place finish (Barber Motorsports Park). He ended up finishing his rookie campaign ninth in the overall standings despite switching teams – TJ Speed Motorsports to HMD Motorsports – mid-season. There were already some flashes of potential shown the year prior as Simpson rolled to seven wins, 13 podiums and two poles en route to winning the 2021 Formula Regional Americas Championship. Fast forward to the conclusion of the 2023 Indy NXT season, the 18-year-old’s record included a career-best runner-up result (Mid-Ohio), an additional podium and a pole to finish 10th in the championship standings after competing in 13 of 14 events. The lone event missed, the 1.25-mile oval formerly known as Gateway, was a result of a schedule conflict with his full-time commitment to the European Le Mans Series. He currently sits second in the … [Read more...] about Indy NXT grad Simpson’s path to CGR seat aided by sports car experience
WEC press conference at Detroit show previewed Le Mans, COTA
DETROIT -- Following the Tuesday afternoon press conference at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) and the FIA World Endurance Championship (FIA), a colleague, who does not follow racing closely, turned around and asked me: “Was there any news here? Did I miss it?” No, he didn’t. The conference was to simply introduce the WEC to automotive journalists, though by Tuesday afternoon, many had already left as Monday and Tuesday morning conferences contained all the new models. And many who did come did so to see TV star and race driver Patrick Dempsey, but he was a late no-show. The closest we came to news being made: Nissan’s Roel de Vries, the Corporate VP, Global Head of Marketing, revealed that there would be more news on Nissan’s LMP1 car “soon.” Others on the panel, which was ably hosted by Andrew Craig, whom you will remember as CART’s head but who is now representing the WEC in the U.S., were Pierre Fillon, … [Read more...] about WEC press conference at Detroit show previewed Le Mans, COTA
