We told you last year of the outrageous case of an Oshawa, Ontario used car salesman who bilked unwitting customers out of their hard-earned cash before being sentenced to a month in jail. Well, a second trial recently adjourned, and Ryen Maxwell of Countryside Motors now faces 180 days in the big house. A repeat fraudster, this former salesman’s list of financial atrocities is a long one. In addition to causing fiscal hardship for numerous customers, Maxwell’s actions can be credited with causing, or at least contributing to, one woman becoming stranded in a rural snowbank and the breakup of another man’s marriage. Is it any wonder BHPH lots carry a stigma? First off, let’s recap this shady salesman’s “professional” life. Buckle up for a used car buying nightmare. Last December, Maxwell, whose registration was terminated in 2015, was sentenced to 30 days in jail after being found in violation of both the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) and the … [Read more...] about Canada’s Worst(?) The UK used car market remained buoyant in 2017, with a decline of just 1.1% across the year and 8.1 million cars changing hands. The apparent stability across the year was marred by a sharp 5.1% decline in the fourth quarter, in line with the 5.7% decline in new car sales across the year. The fourth-quarter results could be a forecast of things to come; the used car market is usually a few months behind the new market in responding to trends and changes. Automotive analyst Cap HPI recorded a drop in used car values of 1.1% in December, indicating greater stability in the market; values declined by 1.6% the previous December. Cap HPI Black Book senior editor James Dower said: “Historically, used car activity starts to improve after the Christmas period and values begin to strengthen. The used car market is likely to increase in volume due to the historic levels of new car registrations but, with the decline in new car … [Read more...] about Used car market remains strong as uncertainty looms
In its consultation meeting on January 18, the GST Council revised the prevailing rates on trade of used cars, which fell in the highest 28 percent tax slab and had almost derailed the organised pre-owned car industry in the country over the past six months. With implementation of the GST regime in India since July 2017, trade of used cars had been kept in the highest 28 percent (excluding cess) tax slab, similar to the tax levied on new cars. This effectively meant exponential rise in the amount of tax payable by registered dealers on used car sales as compared to the pre-GST scenario, where the tax stood significantly low and varied between 1-5 percent for most states and in some cases like Delhi, a 12.5 percent VAT was applicable on the difference between a dealer's cost of procuring (buying price - BP) of a second hand car and the invoiced selling price (SP) to its new customer.Along with the applicable tax being low, the methodology also differed from state to state … [Read more...] about 28 percent GST on used car trade slashed to less than half
If you think Lamborghini Gallardos are crazy, you want to meet their owners. Like the lurid shades many of the cars are famously painted in, there’s not a shrinking violet among them. See Lamborghini Gallardo for sale on PistonHeads The model attracts all sorts, from the track-day hero who roasts the car’s brakes to the vinyl fetishist who wraps it in ‘chrome’. It’s why you need to be extra vigilant when buying one, especially given how, when that bull mascot hoves into view, the heart can take over the head.A more sensible soul might pop to a Porsche showroom for that most rational of supercars, a 911 – a 2013- reg S PDK with barely 10,000 miles on the clock is yours for £75,000. The same money will just about buy the rare and sought-after manual Gallardo coupé, but it’ll be nine years older than the Porsche, have covered 32,000 miles and be powered by the less well regarded 493bhp 5.0-litre V10, not the much-improved … [Read more...] about Used car buying guide: Lamborghini Gallardo
The Ford GT, launched in 2005, was the company’s modern reinterpretation of its legendary GT40. It bore many supercar hallmarks, including advanced construction techniques and materials, high-end braking and suspension components and a mid-mounted supercharged 5.4-litre V8. Much to the delight of enthusiasts, all of the engine’s 550bhp and 500lb ft was sent to a limited-slip differential at the rear via a six-speed manual gearbox. The 1520kg GT was devastatingly rapid as a result, with an electronically limited top speed of 205mph and a 0-60mph time of just 3.5sec. “People just love to see them,” says David Jones, owner and director of Ford GT specialist GT101 Limited (gt101.co.uk, 01206 562800). “Every journey is an event. I remember pulling up in a service station and this bloke was just stood there. He wouldn’t leave until I left; he just wanted to hear it run.” All-new Ford GT revealed in Detroit With only 28 cars officially imported, … [Read more...] about Ford GT | Used Car Buying Guide

Ho Chi Minh was a mysterious guy; even after reading the definitive biography of the revolutionary schemer who changed pseudonyms as often most of us change our socks, I still couldn’t tell you much about the man who is now his country’s equivalent of all of America’s Founding Fathers rolled into one. However, I can tell you what Ho Chi Minh drove!my rant about Honda Super Cubs in Vietnam), and I visited the Ho Chi Minh Museum in Hanoi. I wasn’t too keen to visit the creepy embalmed corpse of Ho (whose body got the Lenin/Mao-style waxworks treatment in spite of his dying request to be cremated), but I had heard that his old Peugeot 404 could be found somewhere nearby and I definitely wanted to check that out. Sure enough, there were signs indicating “GARAGE OF HOCHIMINH’S USED CARS” on the museum grounds.givin’ away those Model Ts! A surge in vehicles coming off lease agreements has boosted used vehicle inventory in the United States — a trend that’s proving to be good news for dealers and a headache for Ford, General Motors and FCA.Three or four years ago, used vehicle inventories were at a low point. U.S. automakers weren’t offering bargain leases during the recession and were apprehensive to begin doing so in the years following. Such isn’t the case anymore, with an estimated 12 million low-mileage vehicles set to come off lease by 2019, according to Reuters. Customers leased those vehicles between 2014 and 2016 when automakers experienced a sales and leasing boom. For consumers, a saturated used car market is more than welcome. Carmel, Indiana-based auction firm KAR Auction Services told Reuters used vehicle prices at dealer auctions fell about 3 percent last year and will fall another 3 percent annually in the next two years. Automakers, who sell off-lease vehicles to … [Read more...] about Used Car Prices Falling Amid Stock Overflow
