Lord Lloyd-Webber Kt (as in Knight-Bachelor), was pressed into service by his king, HRH Charles III. The kind of service the composer of "Cats" and "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Evita" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" knows best. His Majesty wanted a song. Or not so much a song as a composition - of a sort fit for, well, a king. For the day of his coronation, in Westminster Abbey, on May 6 in the year of our Lord 2023. So it came to pass that Lloyd Webber set down a melody to Psalm 98, the one that goes, aptly enough, "O sing to the Lord a new song." Then he gathered together his flock - "half the kids in my office," he said - and with them the Lord he madeth a demo; the Lord in this case being Lloyd Webber. To a Yank's way of thinking, it is quite the thing for a Broadway composer to turn court … [Read more...] about King Charles needed a coronation song. He summoned Andrew Lloyd Webber.

They called on the U.S. Department of Justice to intervene in the case, saying Otieno's constitutional rights were clearly violated. “What I saw today was heartbreaking, America. It was disturbing. Why Houston Grand Opera hits a high note for the city’s culture
Opera, an Italian word that means "work," originated in Italy in the late 16th century and has since spread worldwide. The dramatic performances combine storytelling, stagecraft and music to transport viewers to another time and place. Done without microphones, opera singers must amplify their voices to fill the vast performing halls and capture audiences' attention. Despite the stereotype of well-heeled aristocrats peering at a stage through opera glasses, these theatrical productions are now a popular pastime for people of all ages and backgrounds. Houston Grand Opera (HGO) has been a part of Houston's lively performance scene for nearly 70 years and has gained a reputation as one of the leading opera companies in the world. The company comprises opera singers, performers, dancers, musicians, set builders and costume designers who all work together to bring each production to life. HGO has become part of the fabric of the city's cultural vibrancy, introducing thousands of … [Read more...] about Why Houston Grand Opera hits a high note for the city’s culture

(AP) — The effort to recall Democratic New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has failed, following an official count of petition signatures released by the Louisiana governor’s office Tuesday. Although the petition sheets contained over 67,000 signatures, most where declared invalid by the registrar. Gov. John Bel Edwards announced that only 27,243 of the signatures were valid — falling about 18,000 short of what was needed to force a referendum. Signatures can be rejected for a multitude of reasons including, if they are dated after the deadline, the title page is mislabeled, there is erroneous information or profanity, if the person is out-of-parish or if the signature is a duplicate. “My administration has always remained focused on addressing the real pressing issues that face our city,” Cantrell said in a statement to WAFB-TV. “Now, with the divisiveness of the … [Read more...] about Effort to recall New Orleans’ first female mayor fails
We need to get to the moon by 2024. Will this rocket be able to take us there?
The rocket that is meant to bring Americans back to the moon in 2024 recently suffered yet another setback , as a major test of its engines ended in failure after only 67 seconds, according to Jeff Froust at SpaceNews. On Thursday, another dry run will offer an opportunity for redemption. SPACE CLUTTER: SpaceX is dimming the stars in the night sky The Space Launch System (SLS) is supposed to be for NASA today what the Saturn V was for the space agency in the '60s and '70s: the workhorse. NASA used the Saturn V to launch 12 out of the 15 Apollo missions, including all those that took astronauts to the Moon. Similarly, the SLS will be the launch vehicle for the Artemis program, which aims to return Americans to the moon for the first time since the Apollo missions nearly 50 years ago. The test, a “hot fire” of the SLS’s core stage, was conducted by NASA in mid-January and meant to last a total of about eight minutes. The rocket’s four engines shut down automatically … [Read more...] about We need to get to the moon by 2024. Will this rocket be able to take us there?

BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced Monday that she will seek a third term in 2024. There will be plenty of attention turned to the Toyota Center in Houston on Tuesday night, a relative rarity this season given the extended struggles for Jalen Green and the Rockets . But as Houston's professional hoops team slides, the future of the sport will take the floor Tuesday for one of basketball's premier amateur showcases. San Diego County supervisor to resign after assault lawsuit
SAN DIEGO (AP) — A powerful San Diego County supervisor said he will resign amid accusations that he sexually assaulted a government employee, completing a swift and shocking fall for a decorated Marine combat veteran whose star rose with his Democratic Party’s ascendancy in the nation’s eighth-largest city. Nathan Fletcher, who defected from the Republican Party in 2012, was elected to a second term on the county board of supervisors with 65% of the vote in November, two years after Democrats won a board majority that eluded their grasp for decades. Fletcher, 46, was the face of the San Diego region’s muscular response to COVID-19 at daily news conferences. He became half of San Diego’s most powerful political couple after his 2017 marriage to Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, a well-known liberal Democratic state assemblywoman who became a top California labor leader last year. Fletcher’s progressive positions and telegenic presence made him a solid favorite to succeed another … [Read more...] about San Diego County supervisor to resign after assault lawsuit
