Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, as we are often told. But to get to the pinnacle you have to pass through a journey and in a competitive environment like motorsports that means overcoming significant hurdles. Those hurdles are even greater for drivers coming from outside Europe, as was spelled out quite plainly at the FIA Sport Conference in Manila. For F1 to market itself as the best drivers in the world, it really needs to have the best drivers in the world, who have come up through the ranks from countries around the globe. Today it cannot really say that. The cost of climbing the ladder is prohibitively high and access to the feeder series is limited, especially in regions like Asia. MotoGP signed a three-year deal to host a race in Indonesia back in 2019, with the inaugural event at the purpose-built street track on the island of Lombok expected to be in 2021 before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. The circuit did appear on a draft 2021 calendar as a reserve circuit, but was removed following the publication of the final schedule earlier this year due to the ongoing pandemic situation. As the circuit nears completion, MotoGP has announced it will attempt stage a test at the Mandalika circuit later in the year should races in South East Asia be possible ahead of a potential March 2022 race date. The Sant’Agata Bolognese-based supercar manufacturer is reporting an increase of seven percent to a total of 3,457 units globally compared to 3,245 in 2015. This is the first time Lamborghini surpassed the 3,400 units mark following six years of continuous growth.
