If smaller cars are good, and station wagons are good, and big burbly V8 engines are good... you’re going to enjoy meeting the 503 horsepower 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S wagon. (Full Disclosure: I asked the folk at Mercedes if I could borrow a C63 S Wagon and they said yes. They dropped it at my house with a full tank of fuel and took it away a week later.) Since the early days of motoring one question has hung over the heads of engineers: “How do we go faster?” That particularly troubled the people of Affalterbach when the Mercedes-Benz C-Class wagon was released, because the latest version of Merc’s smallest estate was already quite perky. However, using turbos, a V8 and a whole heap of “more” Mercedes’s AMG engineers managed to make something a little unhinged, elegant and a whole lot of fun. AMG’s take on “make it faster” has always been one of throwing as much power as you’d deem necessary under the hood, but keeping … [Read more...] about The 2018 Mercedes-AMG C63 S Wagon Is The Perfect Size And So Is Its Insane Engine

People flock to SUVs because they want space but estates are oh-so-very-boring, right? For the most part, yes, but there are some exceptions, which almost always seem to wear an AMG or RS badge. By combining the best out of two worlds, that is supercar-like performance and plenty of room inside for the entire family, the latest Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate has become one of the leaders in the executive segment. And for very good reasons: like 612 PS (604 HP / 450 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque. This should be enough for most enthusiasts to take to the track or go supercar hunting after the school run. With 3.5 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) spring and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph), we probably would be tempted to engage in such endeavors occasionally with Merc’s super estate. Having 612 PS (604 HP / 450 kW) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of torque should be enough for most Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate owners. After all, in stock form, the executive wagon takes as little as 3.5 seconds to go from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) and maxes out at 250 km/h (155 mph) in EU-spec. Still, why settle for less when you can have more? This must be what Wheelsandmore thought when they came up with a few mods for the E63 S Estate. The most significant one is a tuning box, which costs €3,200 ($3,763) in Germany and will bump the power of the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 to 712 PS (702 HP / 524 kW) and 965 Nm (712 lb-ft) of torque. With this upgrade installed, the super estate’s 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint drops by a few tenths of a second, getting perilously close to proper supercars. There are two lesser versions of the so-called ‘tuning box’. When selected, these allow the powertrain to produce 650 PS (641 HP / 478 kW) and 920 Nm (679 lb-ft) of torque, and … [Read more...] about Mercedes-AMG E63 S Estate Goes From Super To Hyper With 712 PS
The 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S is wrought from the middle of your Venn diagram of desires. You want a car with power and personality; you need a car that can carry kids and cargo. You want a 600 horsepower hot rod; you need safety and subtly. You like wagons, because you have good taste and are smart. Well strap yourselves in—kids and groceries and all—and hang the hell on. (Full disclosure: I asked Mercedes-Benz for this vehicle specifically since a few of my colleagues you know and love needed to be carted around LA for a couple days. I asked to keep it longer because, come on, AMG wagon.) Fast station wagons are quintessentially Jalopnik because they’re as useful as they are artful. And while I almost always argue in favor of having a fleet cheaper specialized cars rather than a single expensive one that tries to do everything, the E63 S Wagon is so freaking good at all things that it becomes its own kind of novelty. And yeah, it’s fast as hell. On a short … [Read more...] about Here’s Why The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon Is Still The God King Of Cars
Last week German tuner Wheelsandmore gave us a look at their Aston Martin Vanquish S Volante and now they have presented us with their take on the super saloon (and estate) with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. The power kit for this car is offered in three stages to suit the need for each and every individual. You can have this for S and non-S models and enjoy the unlocked v-max that comes with it. Stage one and two up the output of the the 4.0 litre bi-turbo V8 to 650 hp (485 kw) and 920 Nm and 680 hp (507 kW) and 960 Nm respectively. But the Wheelsandmore Mercedes-AMG E63 S to have is the stage three tuning box which pushes the output to a full 712 horses (530 kW) with 965 Nm of torque. We finally have our hands on a 603 horsepower $130,300 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S station wagon and are here to share as much of it as possible with all of you. Few cars embody the spirit of Jalopnik as much as a fast, fierce and also utility-friendly station wagon. And while we wish it had three pedals, come on. 603 HP wagon. Our test car has about $3,000 worth of carbon fiber on it, among other options, and so far all we can really tell you is that it’s loud and when you floor it from a stop light the car pretty much seems to alter the speed of time and space. Kristen Lee has also described the back seat as “nap friendly.” Expect some finer photos, a more complete shakedown and maybe some takes on what it’s like to live with this thing soon. Meanwhile, now’s a great time to ask questions and hopefully we can satisfy your curiosity in the review. … [Read more...] about What Do You Want To Know About The 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S Wagon?
BMW can’t even be bothered to sell any versions of its new 2017 5 Series wagons to us Americans at all, because we are not European scuba divers. But Mercedes is here to save the day with the all-new 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S wagon coming to your local dealership this fall. The E63 S wagon takes everything you love about the absolutely bonkers E63 S sedan, like the 4.0-liter twin turbo V8 that pumps out 603 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, and shoves it into a gorgeous wagon body. All that power is transmitted through a nine-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, meaning the E63 S should hit 60 MPH in 3.4 seconds. The wagon has all the “cool shit” from the sedan, like race mode, a locking rear differential, a lap timer app and of course, drift mode, because if you are going to drop this kind of coin on a 600+ horsepower wagon you better be able to get it sideways. The Mercedes E63 S wagon is scheduled to make its world debut at the Geneva Auto Show and … [Read more...] about The 603 Horsepower 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon Is Coming To America
UK publication Auto Express paired up two of the hottest wagons on sale today for a drag race. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon against the Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo locked in a battle for long-roof supremacy. Which wins? Pick one.Well, in the most important metrics—0-60 mph, 1/4-mile—the AMG takes it. Not a huge surprise considering its working with 603 horsepower to the Porsche's 550, but, the Panamera still makes an impressive showing. It's actually 0.3 seconds quicker to 100 mph, and not far behind in every other metric. We should be thrilled to live in a world where Mercedes-AMG and Porsche offer wagons that can keep up with supercars, so maybe we should consider ourselves the true winners here. And in any case, Porsche has the 680-hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo waiting in the wings for a rematch. … [Read more...] about Which Super-Wagon Is Quicker?
Mercedes-AMG might be gunning for overall Nürburgring glory with the Project One hypercar, but its other cars are already doing impressive things at the famous track. In the hands of Christian Gebhardt, of Germany's Sport Auto magazine, an AMG E63 S Wagon just set a new lap record. Running a 7:45.19 at the Nordschleife, the AMG E63 S is now the fastest wagon to ever lap the track, and one of the fastest four-doors too. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below This`1 is not entirely surprising given that the E63 S Wagon packs 603 hp from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and pairs that with a clever all-wheel drive system. Still, it's impressive for something that can carry a small family and all their stuff in luxury. This laptime is also a huge improvement over the last E63 S, which ran a 7:55 in a 2013 Sport Auto test. Oh, and that last-gen E63 S was a sedan, making the new wagon's record that much more impressive. … [Read more...] about The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Is the Nurburgring’s Fastest Wagon
The explosive Audi RS2, all 311bhp of it, is often reckoned to be the world’s first high-performance estate.Certainly it was the first car to combine the practicality of a bigger- booted wagon body with the straight- line speed of a supercar. Thanks to its quattro four-wheel-drive system and punchy turbocharged engine, it was actually faster to 30mph than the mighty McLaren F1, as discovered by this magazine’s road testers in the mid-1990s – but the first rapid estate car it was not. BMW’s E34 M5 Touring had arrived two years before it, in 1992, albeit in left-hand- drive markets only.Another two years before that, Subaru had endowed an estate car with more power than was strictly necessary by offering the Legacy with as much as 197bhp in its home market of Japan.Whether it was Audi, BMW or Subaru that invented the fast estate is a matter for debate, then. But which manufacturer builds the best high- performance wagons in 2018? That we can answer for certain. As … [Read more...] about Super estate showdown: Mercedes-AMG E63 S vs C63 S vs Audi RS6 vs RS4
