Let's just be honest: Father's Day gets lapped every year by Mother's Day. A common explanation is that if Dad (or Granddad, Stepdad, Husband, Partner Dad, "Mark," That Guy) already has everything he really wants. Baloney! At least if he's a car guy. What he'd really like to have is a new car, according to a new survey by Cars.com of more than 850 adult males. It found that if money were no object, 86 percent would like a new set of wheels for Dad's day. It always is, though, so dinner/food (38 percent), a gift card (24 percent) and tools (16 percent) top their actual gift expectations. But I guarantee that no matter what Dad's driving, there are car features he wishes he had. Like horsepower or displacement, you can't have too much of a good thing. Related: You Are Appreciated: Favorite Car Features for Dear Mama Stereotypes aside, the best car features for dads aren't all macho. Sure, kick-to-open liftgates are pitched as a convenience for busy moms, but what about busy … [Read more...] about Who the Hell Wants Socks? Our Fave Car Features for Father’s Day

With sales plummeting, major nameplates being cancelled and the world collectively switching to crossover, the modern sedan is fading toward irrelevancy. It’s about damn time. Good riddance. Now, I’m not a big fan of crossovers, but they make sense. In theory, there is a buyer who needs increased ground clearance in a hatchback form factor, whether for ease of entry or dealing with rough terrain. There are a ton of downsides to the current crossover-apocalypse. We’re losing small cars, many of which were fun or affordable to buyers in ways bigger and always more expensive crossovers are not. It’s a bad situation for how we finance vehicles, and for fuel economy. And driving dynamics are scientifically better when cars are lower to the ground. None of this changes the fact that the three-box sedan doesn’t make sense. Because while automotive journalists love to ramble about how crossovers are just more expensive wagons, we miss the fact that sedans are … [Read more...] about Sedans Don’t Make Sense Anymore

The 2018 Mercedes AMG E63 S is wrought from the middle of your Venn diagram of desires. You want a car with power and personality; you need a car that can carry kids and cargo. You want a 600 horsepower hot rod; you need safety and subtly. You like wagons, because you have good taste and are smart. Well strap yourselves in—kids and groceries and all—and hang the hell on. (Full disclosure: I asked Mercedes-Benz for this vehicle specifically since a few of my colleagues you know and love needed to be carted around LA for a couple days. I asked to keep it longer because, come on, AMG wagon.) Fast station wagons are quintessentially Jalopnik because they’re as useful as they are artful. And while I almost always argue in favor of having a fleet cheaper specialized cars rather than a single expensive one that tries to do everything, the E63 S Wagon is so freaking good at all things that it becomes its own kind of novelty. And yeah, it’s fast as hell. On a short … [Read more...] about Here’s Why The 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon Is Still The God King Of Cars
For fans of classy style, speed and hauling things, today’s arrival of the new 2019 Audi A6 Avant is good news. It looks good as one would expect from an Audi wagon. Sadly, we know the A6 Avant won’t make it to America, but Audi’s argument for withholding its long roof goodness is getting weaker. The new A6 Avant comes with all the goodies Audi backs into its other models, including huge digital displays, dynamic suspension options and cloud-based communications. And since it is a wagon, buyers get up to 56 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats down. The A6 Avant is also available with two motors both hooked up to 48v mild hybrid systems for more efficiency. The gasoline-powered turbocharged V6 pumps out a respectable 335 horsepower, and there’s a V6 diesel that we don’t need to talk about. As expected, there are no plans to bring the A6 long roof to the U.S., though if you write enough letters Audi maybe the Germans will sort of think about … [Read more...] about The 2019 Audi A6 Avant No Longer Has An Excuse Not To Be Sold In America
We are in an unexpected golden age of wagons. This year alone, your hardworking Jalopnik staff has tested wagons from Volvo, Buick, Mercedes and Jaguar. Wagons are having a bit of a moment thanks to the crossover boom and how Americans are going nuts over anything with a hatch. But now we find ourselves in what may be the wagon apex predator: the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo. You may recall that we’re currently on the second-generation Panamera, and the first ever good-looking one. Well last time, Porsche flirted with a wagon concept but never actually brought it production. For this iteration of the Panamera, it finally happened, and it is for sale in America. The one you see here is not just any Panamera, either: it is a Panamera Turbo. This wagon has a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 pumping out 550 horsepower. Zero to 60 mph happens in 3.4 seconds with launch control, top speed is 188 mph, power goes to all four wheels via an eight-speed PDK, and it’s got up to 49 cubic feet … [Read more...] about What Do You Want To Know About The 2018 Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo?
UK publication Auto Express paired up two of the hottest wagons on sale today for a drag race. The Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon against the Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo locked in a battle for long-roof supremacy. Which wins? Pick one.Well, in the most important metrics—0-60 mph, 1/4-mile—the AMG takes it. Not a huge surprise considering its working with 603 horsepower to the Porsche's 550, but, the Panamera still makes an impressive showing. It's actually 0.3 seconds quicker to 100 mph, and not far behind in every other metric. We should be thrilled to live in a world where Mercedes-AMG and Porsche offer wagons that can keep up with supercars, so maybe we should consider ourselves the true winners here. And in any case, Porsche has the 680-hp Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo waiting in the wings for a rematch. … [Read more...] about Which Super-Wagon Is Quicker?
This Audi RS4 needs to be very good. Sounds blunt, but consider it this way: the RS4 arguably hasn't been the pick of this sector for a decade now, since the departure of the B7 generation. The current RS6 has shown a degree of Audi Sport panache, though is approaching the end of its tenure - there's no escaping that an E63 is a more complete car now. And the RS5, talented and accomplished though it is, struggles to charm against familiar German (and less familiar Japanese) rivals. More than that, however, is the very fact that this is Audi heartland; more than the huge wagons, more than the R8 and arguably more than anything with five cylinders, doing compact and potent estates is the foundation on which the Audi Sport legend resides. The RS2 was like nothing else at the time; the first RS4 was within 20hp of a Ferrari which cost twice as much; the B7 RS4 was the first fast Audi anybody could quite happily buy over an M3. There's heritage, put simply, heritage that Audi will be only … [Read more...] about Audi RS4 vs. Mercedes-AMG C63 S
