Fans of the Fast & Furious franchise have what to look forward to. Not only with the upcoming ninth installment of the namesake series, but with a forthcoming spinoff, too. Titled “Hobbs and Shaw” (at least tentatively), the new movie will focus on those two characters: Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (played by Jason Statham). But they won’t be the only big names to feature. The latest word from Hollywood, as reported by USA Today, has it that Idris Elba has signed on to play the villain in the movie. And Venessa Kirby will feature as Shaw’s sister. Best known for his portrayal as the mythical gatekeeper Heimdall in the Thor movies, as hero Stacker Pentecost in Pacific Rim, as Russel “Stringer” Bell in The Wire television series, an as Luther in the eponymous British show, Elba knows his way around cars like the ones central to the FF series. He worked at Ford’s plant in Dagenham while his … [Read more...] about The Stars Align For Fast And Furious Spinoff ‘Hobbs & Shaw’

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is set to bring his "Fast and Furious" character Luke Hobbs back to the big screen. This time around, however, he's the star in a spinoff from the main franchise. Titled "Hobbs and Shaw," the film features The Rock and co-star Jason Statham reprising his role as Deckard Shaw. "Hobbs and Shaw" will hit theaters on July 26, 2019, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Also joining the cast is Idris Elba. Known for portraying great characters in the HBO series "The Wire," within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and in "Pacific Rim," among many other memorable roles, Elba will serve as the villain in this one. We don't know anything about the story line just yet, but it's safe to assume that Hobbs and Shaw will reluctantly join forces to bring down bad-guy Elba. This film will take place in the "Fast and Furious" universe, and it's being written by a man who understands this world. Screenplay writer Chris Morgan wrote "The Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift," "Fast … [Read more...] about The Rock to star in “Fast and Furious” spin-off, “Hobbs and Shaw”

Here at Jalopnik, we get a lot of press releases, marketing pitches, spam and emails. Most of them I half-heartedly archive, but one caught my eye today: a pitch with the subject line “David Leitch to direct Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham.” And I got very excited because I initially and very quickly read that as “David Lynch to direct Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham.” Alas, that is not the case. I am here to report that unfortunately, and against Hollywood’s better judgment, the Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive director is not in fact helming a Fast & Furious spinoff. And that sucks, because I believe that should happen. Anyway, EW reports that David Leitch, who directed Atomic Blonde (which I liked) and is doing Deadpool 2, is making a spin-off of the car franchise starring characters Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, played by Johnson and Statham, respectively. This is … [Read more...] about What Would David Lynch’s Fast And Furious Look Like?
Apparently, Vin Diesel is still a #CandyAss. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, The Rock had this to say about Diesel, with whom he costars in several movies from the Fast and Furious franchise: "Vin and I had a few discussions, including an important face-to-face in my trailer ... And what I came to realize is that we have a fundamental difference in philosophies on how we approach moviemaking and collaborating." It's that difference in philosophies, as Johnson put it, that is the reason Johnson and Diesel never actually appeared in any scenes together in 2016's The Fate of the Furious. "It took me some time, but I'm grateful for that clarity. Whether we work together again or not." Whether they work together or not is surely an issue that Universal Pictures, the studio behind the franchise, is keenly interested in ironing out. As for Johnson, it sounds like he's mostly moved on. Specifically, to his Fast and Furious spin-off project, Hobbs and Shaw, with fellow actor Jason … [Read more...] about Dwayne Johnson finally understands Vin Diesel, but still harbors ‘ill will’
