If you’ve never heard of the VW Aquila, we totally understand. It wasn’t a production model, but a kit car that took plain old VW Beetles and turned them into BMW M1-like exotics with gull-wing doors. Looking at its eBay ad, we can see that this is car (or kit) number 137 out of 150, with a bright cream exterior, brighter wire wheel covers and a well-conditioned interior with name-embroidered carpeting and low-slung leatherette bucket seats. This is not the type of ride you drive to blend in, that’s for sure. Other features include the sports steering wheel, overhead console, SpaceKom Autocomp 7000A fuel efficiency computer and the full Stewart Warner gauge package, mounted in a burled walnut-style dashboard. While the car looks…the way it looks on the outside, underneath you’ll find a 1.200cc VW Beetle power unit and a four-speed manual transmission. This adds up to easy maintenance work, according to the seller. In the end, while the Aquila may be … [Read more...] about VW Aquila: Have $17,000 To Spare For An Exotic Looking Beetle?

The automotive industry is always changing. But two of the more significant announcements in recent years — the apparent demise of the VW Beetle and the jettison of the majority of Ford sedans — is the focus of Episode 41 of The Weekly Driver Podcast. Co-hosts Bruce Aldrich and James Raia discuss the recent announcements by the respective carmakers in the news-oriented edition of our ongoing week chat about all things cars and trucks. The VW Beetle may soon no longer be made. Image © James Raia/2017 The pending loss of several Ford models and the icon Beetle came, respectively, in a press release from the former and the text of a speech by a VW executive in Europe. The Beetle was first sold in the United States in 1949. Sales of the iconic vehicle suffered in 2017, with 15,116 new units sold. It was 3.2 percent lower than 2016 sales. Also in Episode 41, we discuss Ford’s massive pending changes. The carmaker recently announced it “will transition to two … [Read more...] about Episode 41, Goodbye to the VW Beetle, Ford sedans
Let’s be honest: even for a series of movies based on a line of plastic toys, the Transformers movies have generally sucked, pretty dramatically. So, my expectations for this new Bumblebee movie are pretty low. That said, there’s been some decisions that have given me the barest bit of hope: Bumblebee is a Volkswagen Beetle again, not a Chevrolet Camaro, and this trailer isn’t just a dimwitted orgy of explosions and idiotic one-liners. Here’s the trailer, if you’re curious: It feels a bit more like the Iron Giant, right? The robot is tentative, unsure at first, not immediately threatening. It’s a much more nuanced take than we’ve seen from the Transformers series, and that’s a refreshing change. Looking at the design of the robot, it’s interesting to see how the very different aesthetics of a 1967 Volkswagen Beetle and the look of a Transformer space-fighty robot are merged. The overall proportions and stance of Bumblee, in … [Read more...] about The New Bumblebee Movie Looks Like The Iron Giant If He Was Made From VW Parts

America loves its pickup trucks and on the face of things, it’s easy to see why. Unlike other vehicles, pickup trucks allow you to tow large cargo, drive through poor weather and rough terrain, and carry large items in the bed while being comfortable. But there’s one problem with pickup trucks – they’re too big. Midsize pickups have become popular recently, as consumers are starting to realize that having a pickup that can tow 20,000 pounds is like having a bunker for the end of the world. It’s great when you need it, but how often will it come in handy? That answer to the latter question, for the majority of drivers, is rarely. Even midsize trucks, though, like the Chevrolet Colorado may prove to be too much for drivers. When properly equipped, the Colorado has a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds. Unless you’re a construction worker, farmer, or track junkie that’s towing a race car on a weekly basis, the Colorado’s big, bulky, and way too … [Read more...] about Why In The World Hasn’t Volkswagen Made An Official Beetle Pickup?
June 15, 2011 by Tom Williams 1 Comment In VW’s well-documented quest for greater sales volume in North America, the parade of new product from the German company includes a new Beetle, previewed by The Garage at the 2011 New York Auto Show. The 2012 Beetle is decidedly a sportier looking car than the cutesy New Beetle it replaces. VW recently announced pricing for the 2012 Beetle, so here goes: 2.5L: $18,995USD. The bread and butter Beetle, powered by VW’s familiar 2.5L inline-5, rated at 170hp. A five-speed manual is standard, six-speed automatic optional. I know what you're thinking. "Bob, there's no way that's a VW Beetle. Look at it! It's some kind of rare supercar from the David Lee Roth era. Don't kid a kidder."Friends, I'm here to tell you you're right. And wrong. Because while the looks of this car scream "high-power exotic," the title tells another story. Witness the 1980 Aquila—or rather, the 1963 VW Beetle with a fiberglass drop-on body made by American Fibre Craft in 1980. Advertisement - Continue Reading Below The eBay listing from Streetside Classics in Phoenix, Arizona tells the story. American Fibre Craft was just one of countless 1970s and 1980s companies that made fiberglass bodies for air-cooled VW Beetles. The car world will soon enter the electric age and in doing so, some old favourites will have to be let go. One of them will be the iconic Volkswagen Beetle, which will not be replaced after the current car goes out of production. This was confirmed by VW R&D boss Frank Welsch, according to Autocar. Welsch said at the Geneva Motor Show that “two or three generations is enough now,” referring to the Bug, which was brought back to life in 1997, with the current and second generation model following in 2011. The VW man said the car was “made with history in mind but you can’t do it five times and have a new new new Beetle.” The Beetle is also available as a convertible, and Welsch said that the recently confirmed T-Roc convertible will fill the role of the Beetle Cabriolet. No future Beetle EV to rival the upcoming MINI Electric does not mean that VW is completely throwing retro out of the window. Europe’s biggest carmaker has already confirmed … [Read more...] about VW Beetle will not be replaced, no EV future for Bug
