McErlean Published 9:56 PM EST Jan 22, 2019 The tragic deaths of the Abbas family at the hands of a driver in Kentucky presumed to be intoxicated at the time of the incident should be considered a call to action. As an Emergency Physician, I see DUI patients every shift. Some are involved in single- vehicle accidents. Others are the cause of multi-vehicle accidents with multiple injuries. Many are brought to the ER by state or local police who need a forensic-quality specimen as the basis for arrest and prosecution. In Michigan, the only groups that will be aware of such an incident will be the insurance company, constabulary, and the DUI perpetrator himself. Any additional inquiries or access are protected by current HIPAA legislation. This should change. Associated Press Published 8:23 AM EST Dec 18, 2018 KALKASKA, Mich. — A TV station says a mid-Michigan sheriff who pleaded guilty to driving while impaired asked a deputy not to arrest him. WJRT obtained the police report and video of the Nov. 16 arrest of Midland County Sheriff Scott Stephenson. He was suspected of drunken driving after leaving a deer hunting camp in Kalkaska County. A breath test revealed a blood-alcohol level nearly three times over the limit. Stephenson is heard on the video asking that he not be arrested. He says, "Jesus Christ, I'm a sheriff." Associated Press Published 1:34 PM EST Dec 13, 2018 COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio's State Highway Patrol says a recent enforcement and awareness effort on impaired driving as part of a multi-state law enforcement partnership resulted in a total of 700 arrests for driving under the influence. The patrol reports 280 of those arrests were made in Ohio. State police from Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, West Virginia and Indiana also participated in the initiative that was in effect from 12 a.m. on Dec. 7 through 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 9. It also was aimed at educating motorists about the dangers of impaired driving.
