HOUSTON (AP) — A federal appeals court on Monday restored the death sentence of a bank robber convicted of killing his best friend, his friend’s fiancée and their three children. In a 32-page opinion, a three-judge panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a lower court ruling that would have freed Ronald Jeffery Prible Jr. if the state did not retry Prible within six months. The panel ruled Prible failed to raise issues sufficiently compelling to discredit his conviction and sentence. A Harris County jury condemned Prible to death row in 2002 for killing Esteban "Steve″ Herrera; Herrera’s fiancée, Nilda Tirado; Tirado’s 7-year-old daughter Rachel Elizabeth Cumpian; Herrera’s 7-year-old daughter Valerie; and the couple’s 22-month-old daughter Jade Herrera in 1999. Testimony from the two-week trial showed Prible shot Herrera, then raped and shot Tirado before setting her body on fire to hide DNA evidence. The children died from smoke inhalation from the … [Read more...] about Appeals court restores death sentence for Houston family’s death

WA GOP House member who voted to impeach Trump concedes
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, one of two Republican members of Washington’s congressional delegation who voted to impeach Donald Trump, has conceded her reelection bid after being overtaken in late vote tallies by a GOP challenger endorsed by the former president. Trump had targeted the six-term incumbent and endorsed Joe Kent, a former Green Beret, in the 3rd Congressional District contest. The district is in southwest Washington state, across the border from Portland, Oregon. Herrera Beutler, who was first elected to the U.S. House in 2010, lead Kent by about 4,700 votes on election night but her lead shrunk throughout last week, and updated returns put Kent ahead and into the No. 2 spot on Monday night. Once Clark County, the district's largest, and Thurston Counties updated their tallies Tuesday, Kent led by 928 votes and 22.7% of the … [Read more...] about WA GOP House member who voted to impeach Trump concedes
Newhouse’s primary success rare among GOP impeachment voters
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The 4th Congressional District in Washington state is a land of snow-capped volcanic peaks and lush irrigated orchards that produce most of the nation's apples. It's also home to one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump and then won his next election. U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse was one of 10 Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year, and is one of only two to beat back GOP challengers this year. Newhouse was the leading vote-getter in the race for his seat in the Aug. 2 Washington primary election, despite withering criticism from Trump and a Trump-backed challenger. Meanwhile, U.S. Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif. - who like Newhouse ran in a top-two open primary - also prevailed two months ago. U.S. Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., who also voted to impeach Trump and represents the Vancouver area, conceded to Trump-backed challenger Joe Kent on Tuesday night. Analysts say Newhouse had a couple of advantages that … [Read more...] about Newhouse’s primary success rare among GOP impeachment voters

Liz Cheney projected to lose to Trump-backed Hageman in Wyoming
JACKSON, Wyo. - Rep. Liz Cheney - the once-high-ranking Republican who defied her party to wage a lonely crusade against former president Donald Trump - lost her primary Tuesday while vowing she would do everything in her power to keep Trump from returning to the White House. Harriet Hageman, a lawyer with Trump's endorsement, ousted Cheney, clinching the GOP nomination for deep-red Wyoming's only House seat. Cheney fell in defeat despite her appeals to Democrats and independents to re-register as Republicans and vote for her. The race marked the last primary challenge to a small group of House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump last year and are mostly set to leave Congress after withering backlash. With about 38 percent of the vote tallied, Hageman had more than 62 percent to Cheney's 33 percent, according to the Associated Press, which projected Hageman's win. Hageman headed into the day as the clear favorite and close observers had anticipated her victory for weeks. … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney projected to lose to Trump-backed Hageman in Wyoming
