Silverstone intends on making the British Grand Prix have a festival vibe, as it chases a new long-term deal with Formula 1. Silverstone’s current deal with F1 comes to an end after the 2024 race, but the venue for the first-ever Formula 1 Grand Prix is hopeful of securing a new long-term deal going forward. With ‘event’ Grands Prix becoming the norm and Liberty Media introducing the Miami and Las Vegas events, Silverstone is aiming to follow in the footsteps of Australia – Melbourne recently signed a new 10-year deal with F1 . With Silverstone’s location being away from major cities, based out in rural Northamptonshire, the circuit’s managing director Stuart Pringle said F1 has come to expect a certain level of non-racing entertainment over the course of a GP weekend. “To recognise that in Miami and with Las Vegas coming online, there is an expectation to a level of entertainment that is something that has not previously been seen at Silverstone,” Pringle told … [Read more...] about Silverstone chasing ‘festival feel’ for new long-term deal

Aston Martin eye new long-term deal for Vettel
Aston Martin are eager to keep Sebastian Vettel within their ranks for the 2023 season and beyond, as his contract is up for renewal. The four-time World Champion is in his second year with the Aston Martin squad, having signed on for a year at a time following his Ferrari departure at the end of 2020. With his current deal coming to an end at the conclusion of the 2022 season, it’s not yet clear whether Vettel will seek to continue in F1 or choose to leave the sport behind. But Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack, a vocal supporter of Vettel having known the German from their time together at BMW-Sauber in 2006, has said the team would like to tempt Vettel to sign up for a long-term deal. “We were always clear that if he wants to continue, we would like him to stay for long, yes,” Krack told media in Canada, as quoted by Motorsport.com . “We are talking. We have a very, very good relationship, and it is not that we have to set each other deadlines. Obviously at one point, if … [Read more...] about Aston Martin eye new long-term deal for Vettel
Aston Martin keen for Vettel to stay long-term as F1 talks loom
Listen to this article Four-time F1 world champion Vettel joined Aston Martin ahead of the 2021 season, but his existing deal expires at the end of the current campaign. Vettel has been in no rush to make a decision on his future, previously indicating he would look to make a call on whether or not to continue over the summer. Vettel’s future is set to be a key story in the driver market silly season for 2023, particularly as the majority of the front-running teams have already sewn up their line-ups. Speaking in Canada last weekend, team principal Krack confirmed there had been no change in stance, and that Aston Martin would like to keep him as part of its project for the long-term. “We were always clear that if he wants to continue, we would like him to stay for long, yes,” Krack said. “We are talking. We have a very, very good relationship, and it is not that we have to set each other deadlines. “Obviously at one point, if we drag that too long, we will also be … [Read more...] about Aston Martin keen for Vettel to stay long-term as F1 talks loom
Albon only looking ‘very short-term’ at next F1 step
Alex Albon says he’s taking things as they come in Formula 1, having returned to the sport in 2022 after a year on the sidelines. Having been demoted by Red Bull at the end of 2020, Albon played a crucial role in the team’s title success in 2021 after doing a lot of simulator and development work that aided Max Verstappen in his journey to the World Championship. With Red Bull going out to bat for Albon on the driver market, the British-Thai racer secured a return to F1 with the Williams team for his year. While results are proving tough to come by, Albon has scored three points, and has clearly had the measure of teammate Nicholas Latifi . Having refound his feet in Formula 1, Albon is aiming for a longer stay as he acknowledged his return to the sport is going according to plan. “I believe it’s going very well and I want to stay, that’s my goal,” Albon told Crash.net . “The season has started off really well. As a team, we’ve not necessarily been where we’ve wanted … [Read more...] about Albon only looking ‘very short-term’ at next F1 step
The short history of how Erick Fedde found his best pitch
It was in the visitors' bullpen at Wrigley Field, back in August 2017, that Erick Fedde first threw a cutter. Mike Maddux, then the Washington Nationals' pitching coach, asked Fedde, then a rookie preparing for his second career start, if he'd ever tried one. Fedde hadn't, so Maddux showed him a grip and suggested he chuck a few cutters to Matt Wieters. Wieters, a veteran catcher, caught the pitch and nodded in approval, giving Fedde the confidence to try a few against the Chicago Cubs. The righty allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out seven. He made one more appearance for the Nationals that summer, otherwise pitching for the Class AAA Syracuse Chiefs. And though the cutter didn't stick in his arsenal - at least not right away - the idea was planted in his head, eventually leading to a big usage spike. Fedde, now 29 and in his sixth season, is throwing his cutter almost 30% of the time. Nationals Manager Dave Martinez has repeatedly called it his best pitch. Most … [Read more...] about The short history of how Erick Fedde found his best pitch
The radical steering innovation being refined in motorsport
It doesn’t take an engineer to recognise that racing cars have changed a great deal since the dawn of automobile racing. In regard to safety, modern cars are virtually unrecognisable. But many core tenets of those very earliest racers have remained the same, even as the rise of electrification and the push towards automation has brought increased complexity. Until recently, steering systems could be counted among those elements. A mechanical connection between the wheels directly manipulated by driver inputs had been a design prerequisite since day dot. But German company Schaeffler-Paravan changed all that with its steer-by-wire system, which does away with the need for a steering column or any mechanical connection to the steering. It instead transmits steering commands digitally utilising sensors and cable, working in a fashion akin to a driving simulator, and is now being used in competition in the DTM, the national-level GTC Race series and Germany’s national rally … [Read more...] about The radical steering innovation being refined in motorsport
Aviation industry upbeat on outlook for H2
IATA's 78th Annual General Meeting and World Air Transport Summit hosted by Qatar Airways took place from June 19-21 in Doha, Qatar. The aviation industry is finally seeing signs of optimism as it tries to rebound from a major crisis, although the recovery path appears to be uneven across the globe, particularly in Asia-Pacific as a result of remaining restrictions. The restrictions are hampering a region that still lags the rest of the world in terms of aviation activity, said Philip Goh, regional vice-president for Asia-Pacific at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). According to IATA, Asia-Pacific has started to see an uptick in international passenger demand, which tallied more than 20% of the level in 2019 in April following further easing of travel restrictions. "The trend of revenge travel is not just a short-term one as demand will remain, while the high oil prices we face today will eventually go away," Mr Goh said. If momentum continues to grow from … [Read more...] about Aviation industry upbeat on outlook for H2
Democrats swiftly raised $80M after court overturned Roe
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 WASHINGTON (AP) — In the first week after the Supreme Court stripped away a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion, Democrats and aligned groups raised more than $80 million, a tangible early sign that the ruling may energize voters. But party officials say donors are giving much of that money to national campaigns and causes instead of races for state office, where abortion policy will now be shaped as a result of the court's decision. That's where Republicans wield disproportionate power after more than a decade of plunging money and resources into critical but often-overlooked contests. The fundraising disparity offers an example of how a lack of long-term planning can lead to both a structural disadvantage and an exasperated Democratic base. Short of the votes to pass legislation through a gridlocked and narrowly divided Congress, the right … [Read more...] about Democrats swiftly raised $80M after court overturned Roe
Pandemic’s impacts on how people live and work may change city centers for decades to come
(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.) Andrii Parkhomenko, University of Southern California and Eunjee Kwon, University of Cincinnati (THE CONVERSATION) The Research Brief is a short take about interesting academic work. The big idea If companies allowed more of their employees to permanently work from home, businesses would gravitate toward city centers, while people would primarily live in the periphery, resulting in less traffic congestion and falling real estate prices downtown. Those are our main findings from a model we created to forecast pandemic-driven changes in Los Angeles. Many of these changes were beginning to happen back in the spring of 2020, when we began this research. We wanted to build a model that could show the effects of more widespread telecommuting over a long period of time post-pandemic. Our model is like an artificial world – think Sim City – in which virtual people … [Read more...] about Pandemic’s impacts on how people live and work may change city centers for decades to come
