Decision time for indefinite leave to remain
Keating explains decision to bow out of WEC, join United in IMSA
It was announced late last month that Keating will join United for a full season in the IMSA SportsCar Championship , sharing the squad’s ORECA 07 with a yet-to-be-named second driver and enduro racer Alex Quinn, as the team switches its focus following the WEC’s decision to scrap the LMP2 class for 2024. The American driver currently races in the WEC for Corvette Racing in the GTE Am class, but had previously suggested it was unlikely he would remain in the series in 2024 as the current generation of GTE machinery makes way for GT3 cars. No penalties for Leclerc, Bottas and Zhou for exceeding lap time limit
Charles Leclerc , Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu have been cleared by the stewards for exceeding the maximum lap time limit in qualifying. Advert | Become a Supporter & go ad-free The Ferrari driver and the Alfa Romeo team mates avoided penalties after the trio were investigated by the stewards for breaching the maximum time drivers were permitted to take between the two Safety Car lines at pit exit and entry. The maximum time limit was brought in by race director Niels Wittich for the second time in three rounds in a bid to ensure drivers keep their speed up between laps and not create hazardous situations for rivals. The trio exceeded the maximum time of one minute and 54 seconds in the opening phase of qualifying. Each was on their first out-laps in the session. They were among the final four drivers to leave the pit lane and start their first runs in qualifying, and all three immediately had to yield to rivals behind on flying laps, meaning they were forced … [Read more...] about No penalties for Leclerc, Bottas and Zhou for exceeding lap time limit
Doubts emerge over Sebastian Vettel’s full-time racing comeback
BILD Formula 1 reporter Silja Rulle does not foresee Sebastian Vettel returning to racing as a full-time driver. Vettel made the decision to call time on his Formula 1 career at the end of 2022, the four-time World Champion bowing out off the back of two seasons with Aston Martin. But, a recent interview with Sky F1’s Martin Brundle has sparked speculation that Vettel may not be finished with Formula 1 yet, with Vettel having said that he cannot rule out the prospect of him racing in the series again. Doubt over full-time Sebastian Vettel return However, when appearing on the F1 Nation podcast pre-Japanese Grand Prix, where Vettel was in attendance to work alongside F1 personnel on a fresh environmental project, Rulle said she does not believe a full-time racing comeback would appeal to Vettel. Jota team principal Sam Hignett recently confirmed talks with Vettel over a 2024 World Endurance Championship drive. “A comeback always depends on come back as what?” she said. … [Read more...] about Doubts emerge over Sebastian Vettel’s full-time racing comeback
Schumacher can remain Mercedes F1 reserve amid Alpine WEC links
European F3 and FIA F2 champion Schumacher was dropped by the Haas F1 team at the end of 2022 owing to a brace of seven-figure car-splitting crashes that forced the team to abandon upgrades to meet its budgets. The German subsequently rekindled his Mercedes relationship, the manufacturer having backed his junior career, for 2023 with Schumacher serving as reserve driver. But Schumacher is now linked with an LMDh drive with Alpine in 2024. Motorsport.com understands that the French sportscar marque wants a big-name signing to lead its fledgling programme, although an announcement on the driver line-up is unlikely to land until October. Mercedes motorsport boss Wolff said that Schumacher signing for Alpine would not have to end his relationship with the team since he is “part of the family” and “will always have a home.” Wolff said: “Mick has a place here as our reserve driver and is part of the family. “We hope that he stays with us in that role. We will give him … [Read more...] about Schumacher can remain Mercedes F1 reserve amid Alpine WEC links
The blame game – 2005 United States GP at Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS, June 21, 2005 – Let’s pass blame around for this debacle at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in what was intended to be the sixth annual US Grand Prix here. It turned out to be a six-car show with only Michael Schumacher’s intimidation of teammate Rubens Barrichello while exiting the pits from his second stop to excite any one of the remaining fans at the Brickyard. It’s estimated the Speedway had 130,000 on the grounds before 1PM EST but they began filing out shortly after the “start." This “race” was a yawner after all 14 Michelin-shod drivers retired before the official start, completing only their formation lap. All, including polesitter Jarno Trulli went immediately to their garages. Michelin vs Bridgestone Start the blame game with Michelin, who did not fully study the changes to the road-oval circuit after resurfacing and subsequent diamond grooving between the 2004 Brickyard 400 and the Indianapolis 500. In pre-May tire tests, Firestone engineers … [Read more...] about The blame game – 2005 United States GP at Indianapolis
Team bosses respond to fresh Andretti rumours as new team reports intensify
Formula 1 bosses have reiterated that they are waiting for new information after reports that Andretti are close to being given the green light from the FIA. The sport’s governing body’s Expression of Interest process has turned into quite a lengthy one with still no information as to who exactly has applied and who has passed the test. That leaves only rumours and a strong one in the F1 paddock is that Andretti will be given the nod by the FIA before embarking on their quest to convince the teams. F1 teams in the dark about Andretti FIA bid The Expression of Interest process is just the first step in what Andretti and General Motors hope will end with their cars on the grid as to when or if that will happen remains undecided. The FIA have always been the more open to teams joining with the current Concorde Agreement allowing a maximum of 12 constructors but Formula One Management and the existing teams have shown a hesitancy, most unwilling to risk diluting their own … [Read more...] about Team bosses respond to fresh Andretti rumours as new team reports intensify
Benetton, 40 years on: How a fashion label conquered Formula 1
This week 40 years ago, an Italian fashion label signed a deal which began one of the most successful, influential and colourful sponsorship programmes in Formula 1 history. Benetton’s entry into F1 with Tyrrell was successful from the outset, but the brand aspired to do more than just put its stickers on an F1 car. Within three years it had a team of its own and was winning races as a constructor, and in time it enjoyed championship-winning success with one of F1’s all-time great drivers. The idea a brand that was ‘just a T-shirt manufacturer’ could succeed in F1 was greeted with scepticism with some on their arrival. But Benetton soon disproved the doubters and inspired other brands to do the same – notably the soft drink producer which goes into the 2023 season as defending champions. 1983: Tyrrell Plucky underdogs Tyrrell had Denim logos on their cars when Michele Alboreto won the 1982 season finale at Las Vegas. But Luciano Benetton refused to share space on their car with … [Read more...] about Benetton, 40 years on: How a fashion label conquered Formula 1
