Rod Beard The Detroit News Published 4:05 PM EST Feb 6, 2019 With the NBA trade deadline approaching Thursday afternoon and a playoff spot within reach, the Pistons are making deals that help them both financially and in stockpiling young assets for the future. The Pistons’ two trades within a 24-hour span signify a forward-looking philosophy while also seeking relief with the salary cap. They dealt two expiring contracts for players who could help them in the short term, with the possibility of being longer-term assets. Sending Reggie Bullock to the Lakers for rookie Svi Mykhailiuk (pronounced Muh-Kye-Luke) and a 2021 second-round pick allowed them to gain a young prospect to develop — in much the same way they did with Bullock after they acquired him from the Phoenix Suns in 2015. Adding Thon Baker in the trade for Stanley Johnson is another low-risk move, as they were unlikely to pick up his qualifying offer for $4.5 million, allowing him to become a … [Read more...] about Detroit Pistons trades have eye on future, without giving up present

‘Boring day’: Trade action slow on first night of NHL Draft
Stephen Whyno Associated Press Published 5:08 p.m. UTC Jun 23, 2018 Dallas — Rasmus Dahlin went first overall to the Buffalo Sabres, Commissioner Gary Bettman was booed relentlessly by the crowd all night and trade chatter didn’t amount to a whole lot of movement. With the exception of one trade by the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals, the first round of the NHL draft went off without many surprises. Only two players and a handful of picks were traded Friday night, leaving general managers hoping for more on Day Two. “That was kind of a boring first day or first round,” Philadelphia Flyers GM Ron Hextall said. “It’s not typical for this day.” The Sabres picking Dahlin at No. 1 and the Carolina Hurricanes taking Russian winger Andrei Svechnikov at No. 2 got the draft itself off to a predictable start. Montreal taking Finnish center Jesperi Kotkaniemi third and Arizona going a bit off the board with center Barrett Hayton fifth … [Read more...] about ‘Boring day’: Trade action slow on first night of NHL Draft

Here’s ‘What Drivers Said’ after Tuesday’s first full day of Indy 500 practice
There were some expected performances and some surprises — as well as some disappointing showings — in the first full day of practice Tuesday for the May 27th Indianapolis 500. There were three sessions Tuesday: a two-hour late morning/early afternoon practice that saw 25 of the 35 drivers entered into the 500 on-track. Then there was a four-car, two-hour session for rookie Zachary Claman Demelo, as well as three other drivers that needed refresher sessions to make sure they could get up to speed. And then came the third and final session of the day, a three-hour practice that saw 34 of the 35 drivers entered take to the track. Only Matheus Leist did not take to the track in that session. Here’s What Drivers Said after Day One was in the books: JOSEF NEWGARDEN (No. 1 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet): “It is fun to be back out here. It was a busy day. Had a couple of weather issues, but we got a lot of laps. I think it was a good start for us in the Verizon … [Read more...] about Here’s ‘What Drivers Said’ after Tuesday’s first full day of Indy 500 practice
Pagenaud Leads Opening Day Of Indy 500 Drills
INDIANAPOLIS – Team Penske’s Simon Pagenaud has plenty of motivation in this year’s Indianapolis 500. Not only does he need to capitalize on a “double-points” race to climb back into contention for the championship, a “Baby Borg Trophy” for winning the Indy 500 would be his most prized racing accomplishment. After Saturday’s INDYCAR Grand Prix, Pagenaud wasn’t happy with the way his race went, after sliding through the sand trap in the second turn at the start of the race when he collided with rookie Jordan King. Pagenaud fought his way back from last place to finish eighth. During Tuesday’s Indianapolis 500 “Opening Day” practice, the fight back continued as Pagenaud finished the day on top with a fast lap of 225.787 mph in the No. 22 Chevrolet. Pagenaud clocked his time in the morning practice session that concluded at 1 p.m. Team Penske teammate Helio Castroneves was the fastest in … [Read more...] about Pagenaud Leads Opening Day Of Indy 500 Drills
